This place has pretty much exclusively cut my hair for the last several years. They're also cash only. I show up 40 minutes before closing on Saturday. Sign says they're basically at capacity. I'm a working class guy so their weekday hours of operation don't work for me. So Saturday is my only chance to make it in. WSB if you're not going to be open and taking customers then change your hours to like 11am seriously wth. Probably won't be making it back here again between cash only and this c'mon. read more

My husband went there today for the first time and said it was great! He loved his hair cut. The only thing that would make them perfect is if they accepted debit cards. We rarely carry cash and so we have to make a trip to the store or bank just to pull out some cash. I usually get my hair cut by Vietnamese women - because, that's what I grew up with - but I do, a couple times a year, get cleaned up at a barbershop. And during my first day ever in Springfield, I desperately needed one since the sides of my head grow hair faster than the top. It's a bad look; not very sexy at all. Things to know: ***** ABOUT THEM: According to my barber, it's the oldest barbershop in Springfield. How old? It's been open since 1943. So, it practically serves as an institution for the Queen City. QUALITY OF WORK: I asked for a number one on my left side, box on my right, and a comb over. My barber did an excellent job. However, I was a bit worried since they cut my hair with the back of my head to the mirror. Nonetheless, dude did an excellent job. Oh, and total time? About ten to fifteen minutes. PRICES: Only $10 to get a haircut! $8 to get your hair completely shaved. Cash only. (If you don't ever carry cash, like me, then visit the bank across the street.) ATMOSPHERE/ DÉCOR: I'm pretty sure the interior is still from 1943. About it, though, it's a no-nonsense kind of place that shows major love for the St. Louis Cardinals. (That's right, Royals fans, don't step food in here.) I think four barber chairs exist in there. There's one TV, so that's nice. Walked in 20 minutes before closing. First time at barbershop. Did not have to wait very long for a haircut. I told the barber how I would like to have my haircut and to my amazement it was exactly what I had asked for! I asked him to do a minor adjustment and humdinger! A perfect haircut! I'm not sure if this is something that other people have come across in getting their haircut but the last barber that was cutting my hair at another barbershop,did not use scissors. He just used clippers for the most part from what I can remember. I think this might have been the difference to some degree! Also it is very obvious to me that the barbers at Walnut St., Barber shop are very good barbers! I forgot the barber's name that cut my hair but I will edit this review and put his name in the review the next time I get my haircut. Also they have been in business since 1943! New to Springfield and this was my first trip to a barber here. I'm very happy with my choice to try this place first! They open early, which is nice for my schedule. 7am during the week and 7:30 on Saturday. They already scored points in my book for their hours. I got there just after opening and there were already people in both chairs and some waiting. To me, that was a good sign! Figure it must be popular if people get there right at opening. The wait was quick and I got in a cost l chair within 10 mins or so. The barber started by asking a lot of questions and really wanted to make sure he knew I wanted. The cut was pretty quick but didn't feel rushed. Best of all, came out great! He really took the little guidance I gave him and turned it into a nice finished product. The atmosphere was just the way I like it. No bells and whistles you pay a whole bunch extra for. Old-school feel with a couple barber chairs, a few chairs for waiting, and a little space for products they're selling (but they don't push anything on you). Downtown location which is convenient for most of assume. A little out of my way, but worth the trip down there. And for $12, can't complain about much. read more

I'm someone who cares about their hair too much. I just moved close to downtown and was looking to find a great place to get my hair cut there. I saw that there were a ton of places to try. I finally chose this place to try first. I was highly impressed. I walked in looking for them to take my name and be seated, but they walked me straight to a chair. It's a small, old school shop. The guys cutting hair are actual men. Not some young hipster, but real guys. I was nervous at first being my first time but it couldn't have gone better. They were real nice, down to earth guys. Ok, this shop was recommended by my Springfield Cardinal buds. I haven't had a flat top for 40 years and decided to take the plunge. I've tried 2 out of the 3 barbers and when I return, I hope to get the last one. It's been amazing how many compliments I've received on my old-fashioned yet popular cut. Third time there. First couple of times I was given a fair haircut by the gentleman to right (forgot the name). However, today (3/10/18), that gentleman was busy so I sat in the middle chair with a different barber (the youngest one). The guy acted like he was shearing a sheep. He finished without trimming my sideburns so I had to tell him after I was off the chair (by the way, they make you face the TV so you don't see what they are doing)....Until that point I thought it was an innocent mistake, and I gave him a $20 (cut price is $12). However, when I got home , I realized that he didn't trim behind my ears, the top of my hair was a mess...but I thought not trimming behind my ears is an act of a coward.........I now understand why they make you face the TV. read more

Whatever you do don't ask for a hard part. I came here because it was one of the cheaper barber shops in town, now I know why. I asked for a hard part, which is supposed to be a thin shaved line where you part your hair. Instead I got a racing stripe down the side of my head. I had to style my hair the opposite way until it grew back. I'll never return to this place. read more

I have lived all over the country and I have paid a LOT of money at times to get a haircut in a glitzy place, with widely varying results. I moved to Springfield and for some reason it suddenly dawned on me, "why am I paying all that money to get a haircut by a 19 year old young woman in a strip mall chain chop shop when I NEVER know how it will turn out?". So I decided to go "old school". There truly is no substitute for experience and the barbers here only cut men's hair and they are experts at that. My advanced age has allowed me this new found wisdom. Every haircut I have had at Walnut St Barbers has been excellent. Very fast service, no frills, just what you need for ONLY $10.
