This is another huge Walmart Supercentre in Markville Shopping Centre occupying a single floor employing lots of part and full-time people. You can find almost anything you're looking for at Walmart. Every department you can think of and more including services and a McDonald's. With COVID-19 restrictions, many aisles were off limits to shoppers. Only food and essentials like drug store items. Today's visit was to pick up a few food items. The parking lot is huge so there was no problem finding an open spot. Checkout lines were sparse...but I used the self-checkout option. Prepare to pay $0.05 for every shopping bag you ask for.

Busy Busy Walmart! I definitely avoid coming here on weekends when the parking lot is crazily busy!! Since Markville is one of the biggest Shopping Centre in Markham and this Walmart is the only one in the area, everyone comes out here to do their shopping. The line up at the cash can be super long too... even with over 15 cashier slots at any given time only a handful would be open....

Store manager, Nordan, said, "no kid you don't know how to read it. It means 3 for $5. I can't honor that", and then walks away from me.

First time I ever had a manager insult me then walk away. I was in Walmart to pick up a few things last minute when I see I sale that said $3 for 5 for Crispers. A price I couldn't refuse. Once a got to the cash it appears not to be so. When I asked the checkout lady she told me her manager was over there and I can talk to her. She clearly didn't want to talk to her herself. So I walk over and talk to her after taking a picture. This manager, "Nordan", takes one look at me and walks away. I said, "excuse me, I was told you were a manager here", and she turns back and says, "Yea what". So I tell her and show her the sign that said $3 for 5. (It was high in the air so no kid could have tampered with it) She then goes off saying no it's 3 for $5. Even tho I showed her the picture over and over. She then says, "no kid, you don't know how to read it, it means 3 for $5". I then get her to point out where the dollar sign was. She then just says, "it wasn't like that when I came in so I can't honor that", as she walks away again. Too bad Walmart doesn't have a proper complaint channel. It just goes to the store manager again. I'm guessing they prefer Twitter and Instagram.

So yeah, just how much do you like your Japanese toys, and how much do you really want to pay for…read moreit? And is it really Japanese that you are looking for? It'll depend on your upbringing. I grew up amongst the Sogo 崇光, Mitsukoshi (三越), Yaohan (八佰伴), AEON and Seibu (西武) and had access to some really quality Japanese toys of the Showa (昭和) period. Did I grew up in Japan? No, I grew up in Hong Kong, and all I really wanted back then was a decent diecast KMB bus, the one that ran outside my childhood home on Jordan Road. I might've looked at all the Tomicas and Gundams, but none of those things really captured my imagination. That's why my parents bought me Legos instead. Fast forward to today. See, when your $dayjob have you run IT operations for a mid-sized company, you need a hobby that would help you majorly de-stress. For me, that implies building model kits, Lego sets, or travel. Oh, even better if it helps you remember your Hong Kong roots. I might run my plarail train sets, but those are MTR Plarail sets exclusive to HK. It also helps to have a wife who are understanding of your stress shedding hobby (she also love Re-ments). On the way to Toronto we made a stop in Mitsuwa (the US successor to Yaohan) in New Jersey and picked up a few Re-ments and F-Toys trade models before heading north. Me and the missus were driving around Markham looking at the mostly mediocre Chinese malls out there (seriously, how many travel agencies, herbal shops, restaurants, cellphone stores and "Korean" clothing stores do you really need?) during the snowstorm 2 weeks ago, and we came across Langham square, which is this kinda-premium shopping mall complete with free indoor parking (my wife loved that) and a T&T Supermarket, which was in total contrast to the other malls like Splendid China Tower (totally misnamed), which didn't even bother to shovel their parking lot. Maybe the name references the large snow bank walling up their parking lot on Steeles Street East. So why are local Chinese owned malls so keen to crib names from their more famous Hong Kong equivalents? Langham square was named after Langham place, which is this kinda-stylish vertical shopping mall that was located in the heart of Kowloon (fun fact: it was built by Hong Kong's infamous Urban Renewal Authority in an attempt to kill off the nearby Portland street red light district and gentrify the area - totally didn't work). This one was slightly different in that the area features some rather nice premium condos nearby (so if you came from the transit-shopping-podium-condo tower indoor complexes of Hong Kong's upper middle class, man, is this home-like to you). The mall features some of the same we saw all over Markham, while other stuff just seem like it can only exist here at this mall. A tax attorney. An IT consultant. The Markham equivalent of BlueRibbon (pre-prepped meals aiming towards a Cantonese palate). A maid agency. A social club. This seems a little more tailored towards the Crazy Asian Rich. And then my wife pointed out an anime store - those are a dime a dozen, probably selling some fake Pokemon merch painted in garish colors straight from Shenzhen. "Babe, this one is carrying TinyHK merchandise". WAIT, WHAT? So there are only 1 other place that I am aware that would sell you TinyHK diecast cars and models. It belongs to a shop that sells Airsoft guns located on the 2nd floor of Pacific Mall's "Culture walk" (or as I call it, Stereotype Central). I already bought an F-Toys model from them, and I was a bit put off by the owner's non-existent customer service skills. "Hi, may I help you?" Whoa. Is that the TinyHK mushroom hawker center model? And the price isn't too overly ridiculous (Canadian dollars, taxes included). See, I order TinyHK merch directly from HK, but the shipping is fairly atrocious. This store will sell me Tomicas and TinyHK diecast vehicles for a few bucks. "Hey, here's our card. If you order more than 100 USD we'll ship it stateside for free". Score and paydirt. So yeah, the quick and the easy - its a small storefront that is part-time staffed, they carry Tomicas, Re-ments and are an authorized TinyHK retailer. They also sell some other figurines, plushies and toys straight from Japan (so you won't see the same BS as all the other anime stores in Markham). Decent selection, pricing isn't too bad, and if you are a Honkie nerd (like me) you'll pretty much know what you're looking at and how much you want to buy. Definitely a stopover if you collect TinyHK or want that piece of collective memory from Hong Kong in your home. Seriously, they should just call this place "Yaohan". Us old school Honkies will totally get that.

Out of all the little stores which had the Chinese kwa, Phoebe's had the most elaborate ones and…read morethey weren't the marshmellow kind! They are fitted so it flatters the body. Plus it was honestly the cheapest price ($180) I found as I was quoted $200 - 300 at other stores & the designs were much plainer and def. not as fitted. Great customer service and always friendly. They also do custom designs. I took a look around and it's not the best material so you pay for what you get. BM dresses range from $130 + (alterations included). Longer dresses are $30 more. I did see a beautiful satin evening dress by the window w/ very nice material but did not enquire the price. Phoebe's also has wedding dress rental (for purchase as well), prom, evening gowns, etc. They also have special packages where you can rent a kwa, bridal gown & evening gown. I give a 4 star for the kwa rental but if I had to custom make smth here... the star might be lower. Tip: take a photo of the kwa you will be renting (when you pay for the full rental fee) so u know u'll be getting the correct one.

I asked him what size does the gown come in and he just told me flat out that we don't have your size. Excuse me?? What? You don't have size M but only size 0 for all your dresses? His arrogant responses didn't stop there. I then asked him how much does the gowns cost and he said over $100 and got rude with me when I asked him for the exact price. The owner made me feel like I'm too big for his gowns (I'm size 4) and I can't afford them and he doesn't have time for me when there was absolutely no traffic in this run down mall. The gowns in this place are made very small and really overpriced compared to online retailers and David's Bridal, and honestly their gowns are really outdated in terms of style. Do not go to this store unless you enjoy being insulted or offended. FYI: I went into this store because I wanted to check out their gowns for my friend who is going to get married soon. But with this bad experience I've already told her don't waste her time going to this store, and I will tell all my friends who are getting married not to visit this store because I don't want anyone else to be ashamed and insulted by this rude store owner.

Sometimes they take a few hours to go through your stuff depending on volume of people. You can leave or shop around while you wait. Shopping here is interesting. It really illustrates how sizes can differ between brands because there's stuff in large that fit a small person, and vice versa. The store itself is usually organized best they can. A few time though, I did want to purchase something and it had tears or rips in them. But they were being sold at the same or higher price than other pieces of similar style. While I understand the idea is that these are pre-owned, I think they need to maybe review the seams a lot closer before hanging up for sale. It's a bit disappointing to think you found something great at a good value, only to realize it's damaged and you can't really justify getting it.

I came across this store and found out they have multiple locations around GTA. So I went to this location, they had a lot of second hand items available. They take brand name items. They don't just take clothes, they also take hand bags, wallets and accessories. You would simply just need to tell them you're looking to sell. You will need to provide your phone number and a piece of photo I.D. They will send you a text once they have gone through the items. Just be mindful that they don't take everything. They can be very picky too. Sometimes I would bring in a bag of clothes and leave with not being able to sell any of it. It really depends on what they need as they had explained to me before they don't want to over stock on stuff they already have or they don't need for the season. So far, I've sold to them 5-6 times and got back about $30-$40 total. It's certainly not a lot of money but to me it's still something. Before I donate the items, I might as well bring them here and give it a shot to see if I could get back a few dollars here and there.
