I called and the owner (John) picked up saying I made him come back in to answer the phone since he was walking out the door but that if I got it dropped off he'd look at it the next day. I called the next morning to make sure they got the key and everything okay and was told they would look at it and give me a call. By lunchtime I got a call from John explaining that a $145 part was broken and needed to be replaced. Since it required a good amount of labor to move the trans and repace it the labor would be over $900 in addition to the part ($1200+ total). I told him that I was going to call the shop where I got the truck and see what the cost would be to fix it there - John got huffy again and said "hurry up and let me know because I have to get it the hell off my lift and its taking up space." Even by getting another tow 20 miles/a half hour the cost difference was easily in the FEW hundreds so definitely worth getting it towed AWAY from Sweeney's. I scheduled for another tow truck to take it from one shop to the other right away... When I called Sweeney's back to let them know someone was on the way I was told there was a bill waiting for me for $122 for the diagnosis. I'm not the argumentative type usually but I talked to John again and explained that I work for a living too; although I don't expect free service (his diagnosis), I was curious what he would do with that kind of cost difference and $122 when I was never told anything before was a lot more than I expected (this was the first time pricing was mentioned outside of his $1200 estimate). John was his normal demeanor and said that was how much his time to diagnose it was worth. I would have much rather paid $122 more for towing to a different place the first time and not have to deal with calling multiple tow companies, another shop, and the hassle of Sweeney's attitude and ridiculous quotes. Definitely think twice before you go here.

I have never written a Yelp review before. However, I found King's through Yelp and I feel…read moreobligated to echo the great reviews that came before mine. Yesterday while driving, my check engine light popped on and my car was being a little touchy so I just wanted to have it checked out. I drove to the local Pep Boys and they would not make me an appointment until NEXT Tuesday. I checked Yelp and although King's only has five reviews, I noticed they were all five stars. I gave them a call and they told me I could bring the car in any time the next day (today). I pulled into the lot and walked into the office and was helped by Greg, who was professional and personable. I told him my check engine light was on yesterday, but had since gone off, but that I wanted to have it checked anyway. He brought his reader (don't know the technical term) out and said if it was something small, I wouldn't even have to leave the car. He ran the reader and after about two minutes, he tightened my fuel cap (based on something the reader had said) and sent me on my way. He assured me nothing indicated a serious problem and welcomed me to come back if the problem persisted. Free of charge! I appreciate that they didn't keep my car to poke around when nothing was wrong. I've had negative experiences with that at other places in the past. While I can't comment on King's actual repair work, if it is anything like their customer service, I would guess that it is excellent. What I can say is that this five minute interaction established trust. I've had negative experiences at other places in the past as a single female going to an auto mechanic alone, so trust is a HUGE DEAL. Now, if anything more serious ever happens to my car, I would feel 100% comfortable taking it to King's.

Said they changed my spark plugs, when I had the threads broken off in the spark plug hole for one…read morespark plug. They asked if I wanted them all changed and I said yes. They charged me $565 and I proved to them and my 2 neighbors who can vouch for me that they didn't do it. In fact, the plug that had the threads stuck, they half ass fixed that to get the threads out and instead of putting a new plug in that, they actually put an old plug in it. I also have the refund check to prove it. Greg the service manager, I should of punched that f'ing guy in the face. YELP - DO NOT DELETE THIS AT ANYONE'S REQUEST. This is all true and a person who does this to a customer should be in hand cuffs because it is no different than a person stealing from a business. They did not render the services I paid for - that is theft. This happened 5/2025 and I am still so damn mad about this it drives me nuts! Super pissed!!!!!

I told the mechanic I had a cracked front reflector and asked if that would affect inspection. He said it would not, but after looking at it he pointed out that there was also a separation which would allow water to enter and cause more damage. I told him I had a replacement on order and he said he could put some tape to cover it till the piece arrived. I agreed and thanked him. I didn't look closely at my itemized bill till I got home, which is when I saw a charge of $15 for him to put a 3" piece of packing tape over the cracked reflector. Now, that wasn't a huge charge and they probably would have removed the charge if I asked them to, but for me it was more a matter of principle: I wasn't told about the charge. Clay's was off our list. Around the same time, my brother found another local mechanic which we have been using since then, which is over ten years now. Counting family members and two friends we recommended, there are seven vehicles that are now regularly serviced there, and not at Clay's Automotive.
