If you are looking for the most intense and detailed home inspection ever.. call Skip! If this is the first home you have ever purchased I will caution you.. Skip will scare the crap out of you! That being said it is in a good way so you are going into the purchase with eyes wide open! When we purchased our last house the owner did their own home inspection from a very reputable inspector. He gave a good report. Skips report was about 10 times longer. When you schedule your inspection with Skip leave time... he works hard and is very throw. On most reports you will see things like: Several outlets not grounded properly... on Skips you get: Bedroom one outlet not grounded properly. He does not use the broad sweeping comments most inspectors use. As I mentioned above it can be scary when you first look through his report because he does not miss a thing. Make sure you save some time at the end to ask him questions like: What should I be most concerned about. What are major repairs. His report will give you a true insight of what you will have to fix, think about fixing, or prepare for down the road. He is also very friendly and will give you some advice on smoke detectors that will not only make them less annoying by going off all the time... the tips could save your life or the life of a family member. This is a long overdue review for Skip. We first met Skip when he did the inspection for our first home 5 yrs ago. We remember he mentioned he did indoor air quality tests and asked him to come back after we moved in. We were having serious allergy issues and wondered if the paint that was used was the culprit. Turned out the previous owners did a quick renovation themselves before selling to us and when they varnished the floors they used very cheap oil-based stain. They then closed the windows and doors and we happened to have a heat wave. Skip explained that this caused the varnish to off gas into the house, and gave us quite the education on VOCs and indoor air quality. He said it was the highest reading he's ever had for VOCs. We were glad to figure out what was wrong but scared about what to do. Skip was so helpful and compassionate and went above and beyond advising us how to air out our house. He came back every couple month to re-test (and didn't charge for his time) until our house was back to a normal VOC range. Since then we contacted Skip when we had a rat infestation and they chewed through the insulation which came up through our vents. He advised us on how best to proceed to protect the indoor air (especially since by then we had a newborn). We just moved into a new house after an extensive remodel and of course asked him to come back and do an inspection to make sure our contractors work was done well. He is so thorough, and when he's uncertain about something he goes above and beyond to research the issue. He thought we had a too-small water filter on our tankless water heater. He wanted to make sure we had a good size one so we wouldn't have plumbing issues 6 months after moving in (even though it's not a code-issue). After he went home he researched our specific tankless water heater and texted me to tell me he was wrong and it's so not a water filter but a de-scaling attachment to the water heater. He truly didn't need to go above and beyond but that is Skip, he is the ultimate professional. Yes, his reports are crazy long and can be scary, but I'd rather know exactly what's going on in a house since it's one of your biggest investments. His house inspection service is especially valuable if you're looking to do an "audit" of your contractor after a new house construction or full gut remodel (because let's face it you don't have the expertise to know whats going on otherwise). We will without a doubt be turning to Skip on our next renovation to have peace of mind that our home is well-built. My husband and I trust him and turn to him for advice and guidance on anything home-related (we even leave a key for him if we can't be home) He only refers the best professionals he's personally worked with. Skip is super-thorough, and incredibly detail oriented. My landlord is selling my current home to me, and I've lived there for more than a decade. Skip walked in, looked at the space heater, and said, "the heater is upside down." The rest of his inspection was a series of interesting revelations about a property that I only thought I knew pretty well. He has a wide variety of expertise, and I hired him because I was particularly concerned about the roof. He spent about 4.5 hours on a 1200 square foot home, and he noticed everything possible without opening up walls, and he found that a couple of things I thought were cosmetic were probably thousands of dollars of potential work. Fun story: Skip was able to inspect the crawlspace under the house, but wasn't able to get into the crawlspace. Before he left, he said that I definitely wanted a pest inspection, and thought about all the pest inspectors he would recommend so he could refer me to the smallest one he knew! The only negative thing I can say is that Skip talked about getting old and wanting to retire, so he might not be available if I ever buy another property. read more

I was referred to Skip by a highly rated home inspector in the East Bay who was unable to come out and do my inspection and told me I would be in good hands with Skip. He was correct - Skip showed up to our future home on time and explained that he's the slowest inspector in the biz....because he's that thorough. He spent the next five hours going through every part of the home and explaining things he found. The result was a 115-page report with pictures, details, recommendations - essentially a complete home manual. And this was delivered electronically the very next day (on a Sunday!). This was essential for us to meet some tight contingency timelines. If you are buying a house, you really need to hire Skip to inspect your house. He is the most honest, thorough, and trustworthy inspector I've dealt with. I've had other inspectors that went through a house in about 90 mins, but Skip spent 4+ hrs on our house, and inspected every single crevice, and every crawlspace (he didn't just shine a flashlight into the area, he changed his clothes and physically crawled into them). Also, if you are buying a house, go to the inspection and shadow Skip around, he welcomes it. It will take 4-5 hrs because he is THOROUGH. But you will feel you have an intimate knowledge of your house and it's well worth the money. As well, Skip is extremely friendly and patient, and answered all my questions clearly. I can't speak highly enough of Skip, he really helped give me confidence that everything I needed to know about the house was not only communicated to me, but was also in his report. read more

my husband and i recently used Skip to inspect a home we wanted to buy. we are first time home buyers and looking at older homes (50+yrs) so wanted a thorough and comprehensive home inspection. Skip's credentials and especially his sample report differentiated him from other inspectors. his sample report was very thorough, extensive, easy to read and very informative. Skip was very accommodating and answered all of our (many many) questions throughout the process. This guy is amazing. Our situation was a little unique; we'd been living in a condo as renters for over a year. Our landlord wanted to sell the place, and we decided we wanted to buy it. Since there was really no point to work with a realtor in this scenario, we ended up just doing a direct sale from the landlord. As first time home buyers we weren't exactly experts on home maintenance, and as far as we knew the place seemed in good enough shape since we'd already been living in it for a while with no major problems. We weren't even totally convinced that a home inspection was needed, but decided to go with it anyway just as a formality. We came to Yelp and decided to hire Skip based on the reviews we saw here. And holy moly I am really glad we did! Skip performed the most thorough home inspection ever, and as a result we ended up requesting several repairs before completing the sale; a whole bunch of minors ones and even a couple major ones. Hiring Skip ended up being one of the smartest things we did during the entire buying process. Skip came to the home we were looking to purchase (eventually did purchase) back in March 2010. I highly recommend him. He spent more time doing the home inspection, compared to 2 different and separate homeguard inspectors (roof and termite) who came the same day. Skip showed up first and right-on time and was the last too leave. He even pointed out some roof and termite issues for the homeguard team missed, which needed to be fixed before the purchase of the house. Skip also showed us issues, not to code, of the house, but was okay because the codes are constantly changing. All the all reviewers have the same 5 stars. read more

I recently hired Skip to inspect the home I'm buying in Daly City. I had shopped around a bit to compare costs of home inspections in the Bay Area and Walker had the best pricing and best Yelp review feedback. True to his reviews, Skip did a fantastic job and was exceptionally thorough, spending hours on site to inspect everything. He really knows his stuff and has certifications to prove it. He gave me a very detailed report about the condition of the home I'm purchasing, exactly what I needed to know. He even gave me helpful info about the most effective types of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors - great to keep in mind for home safety best practices. He also gave me some good referrals to other vendors for other work I needed done on the house. My experience with Skip was nothing sort of astonishing! First, he scheduled me in the next day @ 9:00 a.m. because I had only a 5 day contingency, of which I had blown day 1 not knowing how hard it is to get good property inspectors. Plus, it was the long weekend, so pretty hard to get anyone at such short notice. So, full marks and more there for being flexible enough to work around my deadlines. Next, my home is in Fremont, and he comes from San Bruno, and arrives within 10 mins of his scheduled appointment. That does take some doing... Third, he explains what he's going to do, asks me a few questions about me, and then proceeds to explain to me at my level of understanding (I'm an engineer). He spent over 3 hours looking over every nook and cranny of the house. Checked every outlet, every appliance, every faucet, fireplace etc etc. Climbed the roof, spent ~ 30 mins in the crawl space looking for leaks. He's like a house detective. The sellers, who were present, weren't amused. Next day evening, as promised, I had a 90 page report. To compare, the sellers inspection report was 15 pages. Thanks to him, the sellers repaired some leaks, and gave me a nice little credit that more than covered his inspection. His inspection report is like the bible. Hi! I am not a real estate professional, although I have fairly good understanding how does average home inspection in Bay Area look like. I had two different inspectors hired before Skip. Both of them did OK job overall. On top of it, I had a chance to take a look at half a dozen of other inspection reports. Skip Walker is just in a different league. We bought our house at the end of December, it's a fixer upper, we are still going through the planning phase of how to tackle whole remodeling process. We use Skip's inspection report as a guide to our house, it is incredible how much information he was able to include in his report. More than three months of flipping pages and so far not a single mistake found. He would not only point what is there to fix or take a closer look at, but also suggest how to solve a problem. I believe we received the report in a timely manner following the inspection and we refer to it often. Skip is conservative in his evaluations and will point out improvements that can be made to make a home a safer place, even if it is not required by law. Extremely detailed and thorough inspection. As buyers who had just closed on a property (without inspection contingencies) this is exactly what we needed to identify the issues that needed fixing. I would highly recommend his services to other buyers out there. Skip found many issues that the seller commissioned report glossed over and helped us prioritize the important ones that required immediate addressing. He is also not pushy on trying to sell other services. I was planning to do air quality testing and Skip explained that doing so in the garage and basement was likely a fool's errand at the current stage. Skip writes an almost 100 page report but don't let that overwhelm you as he will color code things that are specific to the property and require addressing. Yes, there is quite a lot of boiler plate language in the report but it's still helpful particularly for a first time home buyer. I would recommend Skip's services highly as long as your goal is to find all potential issues that exist within the property. As an example Skip identified individual outside outlets that were not correctly GFCI, he identified dry rot issues in the deck that the wood destroying pest report had failed to identify, he found places in the foundation that had been dug up, etc. High value and well worth the money paid. read more
