I originally reviewed Wisconsin-based Ki Mobility after first experiencing their durable medical…read moreequipment. In my case, this has primarily been a Ki Catalyst 5. a Ki Catalyst 5 is a manual folding wheelchair generally targeted toward the more active wheelchair user. I'd initially encountered Ki Mobility through a wheelchair I found at a Goodwill. It was pretty basic, but it filled the need at the time. In early 2020, I found myself in a pretty serious health crisis and ended up needing a new, customized chair due to an upper leg amputation. I worked through Numotion, a garbage company, but did manage to get a Catalyst 5 ordered. The Catalyst 5 is generally an active lifestyle chair. It's not really a sports chair, as most of those are rigid frame. The Catalyst 5 folds up, and it fulfilled my need of having a chair I could fit in my car with my now even shorter left leg. From what I've been told, Ki was started by two people with 50 years of complex rehab experience. I believe one came from Sunrise Medical (home of the beloved Quickie 2). My initial review of Ki Mobility was a 5-star. Having been in multiple key chairs since 2020, I'm now dropping it to a 3-star review. After having dealt with Ki Mobility since that 2020 experience, I've become less impressed with the wheelchairs and even less experienced with the company itself. As I noted in my original review, The Catalyst 5 struck me early on as a somewhat refined Quickie 2. Having fully experienced the Catalyst 5 now, I would say they have a strong frame and seating. They have abysmal ancillary parts like casters and brakes. I've had casters and brakes get into disrepair quite quickly, and I've found more than once that even among Ki models they alter the measurements slightly between their models requiring you to essentially go back to them. It's dreadful. It might be workable if they responded well, but they don't. I'm willing to accept that casters and brakes (and other parts) get into disrepair and need adjustment. The dismal part is how quickly that happens here, and just how little Ki backs up their product. Case in point most recently. My less than one-year-old Catalyst 5 had a left brake completely brake - not get loose, not need an adjustment - an actual brake. Quality wheelchair parts don't break in the first year of life for a chair. Nearly every insurance company uses a five-year-cycle if they cover DME - in other words, a chair has to last five years. A brake that breaks in the first year, unless outright abuse is involved, should be replaced by the company. Period. It's well within warranty. But, of course, Ki Mobility denied it because it was an unclear explanation on how it happened. So, my experiment with Ki Mobility is done. I'll still give them that the frames are solid and the seating seems to be durable. However, with supporting parts that have been consistently poor and customer service that doesn't serve the customer this will no doubt be my final Ki Mobility product.

The first pair lasted 5 years. That's. fine. I have gone through another two in 11 months and the springs have failed again. Called Ki and they do not support the product past the warranty. OK. So it's $70 every time they fail plus another $10 for shipping. It's frustrating that the small spring that fails probably costs less than a $1 and I could fix it on my own BUT they don't sell it. Of course, there are other things that I have had to replace on this chair out-of-pocket. Bottom line: Product reliability is low. Support is even lower. Buy something else from someone else.
