We also combined the Interpretive Nature Trail with the Station Cove Trail, which made for a longer, albeit nice hike around 3.1 miles. There's about a 260 ft. elevation gain, but wooden steps help with this ascent and then descent. Usually such a long walk would make my leg muscles ache the next day, but strangely enough I felt no soreness. I guess that means that I'm finally in shape enough to handle longer hikes. Woohoo! The large pond or small lake, depending on your opinion of what a body of 4 acres should be, was beautiful and shimmering in green and blue hues. Didn't see any fish or other creatures in it, but it is supposed to be full with bluegill and largemouth bass. Maybe we'll return for some fishing. Not long after the nature trail joins the falls trail you'll cross over Oconee Station Rd. There is an area for parking cars and from here the trail to the waterfall is about 0.75 mile, so if you prefer a shorter version this is it. I loved seeing the flowers starting to bloom and caught some good pictures of bloodroots and hepaticas. Down by one of the creeks an open area under a rock revealed animal footprints (maybe a raccoon?), which was cool to spot. There were more than a few trees down (probably from Hurricane Helene), but not completely obstructing the trail. As you approach the waterfall you step over some rocks from Station Creek to the other side. I'm glad that we had a good rainfall the day before, because it made for a great rush of water. Truly beautiful and my favorite falls discovered so far. We did run into a few people so it's definitely not an isolated area by any means (and we went on a Monday morning) although we did not meet another soul on the nature trail. Also, between the 3rd and 4th bridge is the Oconee Connector Trail which leads to Oconee State Park in case you want to add another 5.4 miles (I think) round trip to this one, but beware it apparently has an 800 ft. elevation change. Maybe one day I'll brave it. Overall, this was a great hike and our boys really enjoyed the beauty of the waterfall and easily travailed it. Looking forward to come back one day soon! Happy yelping!

This is a highly appropriate name since this section really is more of a series of cascades than a waterfall. On the day of my visit, there had been several days of rain making the trail extremely muddy, but also making the falls extremely full! The flow was so strong that it was hard to see where the Cascades separated from the second section known as The Veil. You reach 'The Cascades' by following the trail on the right after the information board. You will go uphill slightly before making your descent down to the cascades. You will hear the falls long before you reach them. The downhill trail to the cascades is relatively easy, but it gets far more difficult when you continue downhill to see the two lower sections. NOTES: This is a class three hike, meaning you will need both hands to navigate the steepness of the trail. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND good hiking boots and a backpack for any camera, phone or other items you might carry in your hand. The hike to Lee Falls is similar to some relationships, beautiful and easygoing in the beginning,…read moreyet difficult and tumultuous in the end. Lee Falls sure is a pretty girl or handsome guy (depending on your preference), but man, what you have to go through to be with Lee might make you wonder if the hike is actually worth it in the end! { DRIVING NOTES } The drive to Lee Falls was a tad confusing, kinda like bumbling over words when you first introduce yourself to someone. I approached the falls heading north on Hwy 11 and then turning left onto Cheohee Valley Road. I sometimes bring a notepad with me and self drawn maps with directions just in case I lose signal or my phone battery dies. My map had me turning left off Cheohee Valley Road onto Tamassee Knob Road, which is correct. However, Tamassee Knob Road meets Cheohee Valley Road TWICE, and I was supposed to take the second left, not the first. I was taken off course slightly, but eventually found my way to the trailhead parking area. { THE HIKE } Once parked, I headed past the large gate into a field of gorgeous green grass several football fields in length. There are NO blazes on this trail to tell you where to go, however, someone did tie ribbons to trees in key spots to give some sort of direction. Sometimes the ribbons are blue, other times they were orange. At the end of the first field, you will need to cross directly through the Tamassee Creek. There is no footbridge here and you will most definitely get your shoes wet. Actually, there are a total of 6 water crossings, so wear proper shoes and bring an extra pair + socks to change into when you return to your car after the hike. After the first creek crossing, you will enter into the second of FOUR grassy fields. This field is by far the prettiest as it has an island of trees in the center. I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to own this land and build a home here. It truly is what I would expect Hanzel & Gretel's land to look like from childhood fairy tales. A small strip of woods separates the second field from the third. At the end of the third grassy field you will cross Tamassee Creek once again before entering into the fourth and final field. It will be all forest from here, but be forewarned: the trail will become more difficult to follow the closer you get to the falls. This literally is the part of your relationship with Lee where you start to have doubts, but you fight through them to make the relationship work! --- Once you cross the creek for the 6th time, the hike takes a turn from pleasant (grassy fields), then confusing (forest) to outright difficult (the final climb). Each step you make will be heavily calculated and your route to the falls will be determined by your own security. The trail becomes undefined and you will scramble over rocks, huge boulders, downed trees and through the creek itself to make your way to the falls. Talk about relationship obstacles! Although the falls are easily within view, it is an uphill battle to get to the best viewing area. It is very likely you will need to stop and catch your breath. It is this part of my relationship with Lee Falls that I wondered if all of this fighting to be together was worth it. But I pressed on, determined to make it work! { THE FALLS } Once you reach a satisfactory viewing area, take a snack & water break! You have truly earned it! Soak in the sights and sounds of nature as you stare 70 feet up at Lee Falls in all its mossy beauty. Truly one of the most unique waterfalls I've ever seen in the South. My favorite spot was leaning against a large boulder in the middle of the river. Oddly as I looked down I caught the remains of a frog trapped in between two stones. "I feel you bro" I whispered. { FINAL THOUGHTS } I spent about 15 minutes with Lee regaining my strength before saying my farewell and heading back to my car. The return down the boulders was no less difficult, but at least I could walk though the woods more confidently than I did when I first encountered the difficult to follow trail. It's so true that difficulties make you smarter & stronger. The trail to Lee certainly took me through the ringer, but I emerged wiser from the experience nonetheless. It was a short fling that I will always remember. SCOUTING NOTES: * The parking area along 715A is to the right just before you cross the creek. *Parking area can easily handle a dozen or more cars. * Road to the parking area is gravel, but smooth. * Some parts of the FIRST grassy field can be really muddy. Best not to follow the path through the grass. Instead stay close to the treeline on the left for this field. * Trail is approximately 1.5 miles in length to the falls. The first half is super easy & pleasant. * Pack a lunch! You're gonna want to stay here for a while. * Bring extra shoes & socks to change into after the hike. The trail starts at a gate connected to the first of many grassy fields that you have to pass through. This is the part that didn't seem like most trails I've done. It was mostly tall grass, but there was a beaten path that you could find and walk on. Even though it was beautiful, it was in direct sunlight, so depending on the season and time of day, you could be a little warm and easily sunburn if you are not prepared! There are also a handful of water crossings, so wear Chocos or bring another pair of socks and shoes. This is not a trail for the weak! Or for people who prefer a nice, well laid out pathway. I barely noticed trail markers or blaze markers. It is kind of hard to follow at times. The trail was very narrow and full of foliage. There is no way to avoid the plants touching you. Some kind of plant that is similar to poison ivy was everywhere and made me itch like crazy. But once I got to one of the water crossings, I was able to wash my legs off and feel better. Once you get closer to the waterfall, you have to almost rock climb and navigate through a really rocky area to make it to the top of the falls. But all of this was worth it when you finally reach the falls. WOW. It is huge! And there are several spots to rest on the rocks as you take in this lovely view. There are no bathrooms, so make sure you stop somewhere before you get there.

I would have ventured here on my own with my 3 crazy children, but thankfully a friend met us here with her child. Very thankful indeed. The parking area is very small, allowing a few spots for cars. Had no problem finding space on a Tuesday afternoon. The trail to the waterfall is very short, maybe 3-5 minutes. Not difficult at all so that even older folks and toddlers can manage it. The waterfall is gorgeous! There is a small wading area at the base, so we strapped on our water shoes and explored. It's not quite large enough to swim around comfortably, but does become deeper the closer you go to the falls. I did manage to climb up some of the rocks on the left side, but it was quite slippery so I took my time. Apparently, there is access to climb up to the top on the right side as well, but that looked too dangerous for me. We even saw a not-so-small crayfish in the water with its claws. We had this place to ourselves for a good 25 minutes before a young couple showed up. I'm sure it wasn't the romantic moment they were looking for. I really hope the guy wasn't planning a proposal, because when we finally left another family with floats was already heading that way. Haha. Maybe it's not as secluded as I thought. We ended up heading to another waterfall, but on the way there I saw a strange Wild West style town on Hwy. 76. Can anyone tell me what that is all about?? My boys and I had a wonderful 2 night, 3 day stay in Cabin 4…read more Check in was smooth! The cabin had two bedrooms, a living room area with a table/seating, one bathroom with shower and a kitchen. The kitchen has a microwave, large fridge, keurig with pod dispenser or brewed coffee. There are four plates, four bowls and silverware for four people. We opted to bring plasticware for ease and use paper plates. We also brought a pizza cutter, which I'm glad we did. We were supplied with two rolls of TP and a towel/washcloth for up to four people. There are cooking utensils in drawers and a holder by stove. However the utensils in the holder by the stove had sugar ants. I didn't encounter any other big issues in the cabin, but you're in the woods...I was surprised we didn't see more. Cabin 4 has a beautiful sitting area with Adirondack chairs and a fire pit which made for relaxing evenings. The cabin is located right on the lake and we were able to set up for fishing and hang a hammock easily. My only complaint is that the cabin is supposed to come with a kayak, at no charge. We were told the kayaks had not arrived. In this situation it would have been nice to be given the option to use one at the store for no charge. This was not offered not did they allow. If we are not receiving all the items as listed then a discount or alternative option should be provided to guests. The pedal boats are $10/hr. On the site it said must be 16 to ride solo, however when renting we were told anyone in the boat had to be 16+. Another bit of information that should be corrected on their site. Luckily we made it work and they were accommodating. The store has ice cream, snacks, drinks and Knick knacks. Even firewood if you forget yours. All in all, it was a beautiful time and we made great memories!

My wife booked a cabin on the lake for our anniversary at Oconee State Park. We were quite…read moresurprised at how nice the cabin was considering it's a state park. It was well maintained and had newish appliances and plenty of cookware, cutlery and other essentials but we had brought our own anyway. Cabin #4, built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, has a back patio area with two Adirondack chairs, fire pit, and a charcoal grill. The grill is sufficient but next time I'd bring a kettle grill. The park has several hiking trails which seemed to be fairly easy. Unfortunately, we didn't go hiking because my wife broke her arm prior to us getting there. They also offer kayak, canoe, and pedal boat rentals. Overall we had a good time.

There are plenty of benches, swings, and picnic tables. The hubby walked a little further and said there was a little kiddie playground. Lovely place to take the family (or date) and have a picnic. Or just sit and enjoy the water. No swimming or fishi allowed. There were pet owners there with ghdi dogs. (Leashes required.) Also you can pick up something from Wendy's-there are steps behind that business that puts you right on the trail. (Not sure what other business are accessible.)

*** WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HIKE THIS TRAIL ALONE!!! ***…read more Lately I've been wanting to do some off trail hiking because there are hundreds of waterfalls in Northern Georgia that don't have neat, easy to follow "official trails" with signs & blaze marks. Thusly, these trails are less traveled and are better suited for experienced hikers. Not to mention the Coronavirus has me wanting to avoid people as much as possible. Sarah's Creek Falls has been on my radar for a while because the overall hiking distance is relatively short and it boasts TWO LARGE WATERFALLS (+ a smaller one near the campgrounds). ~~~ [ DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD ] Turn North onto Sarah's Creek Road from Warwoman Road. Follow it approx. 1.9 miles to the campground. PASS THE CAMPGROUND ENTRANCE and stay straight on Sarah's Creek Road. You will cross a small bridge over Sarah's Creek in approx. 500 feet. Not long past the bridge the road will fork. STAY LEFT. About 500 yards past the fork you will come to a dirt road on your left. TURN HERE and follow it to the parking area for Sarah's Creek Falls. ~~~ [ THE EXPERIENCE ] Once parked, we secured the car and walked around the forest service gate onto the grassy old service road. HERE'S WHERE IT GETS TRICKY. There is no sign telling where the trail begins off this old road so pay close attention: The old grassy road curves to the right about 200 feet after the gate. Continue to follow for about 750 feet to the last possible trail on the right. There are several faint trails off to your right side but keep going. In total you should walk about 1,000 feet (or 1/5 of a mile) to the trail. The day we visited, the correct trail had pink ribbons tied to the trees at the entrance point guiding you all the way down to the upper falls. To assure you it is the right trail, it parallels the grass road for the first part of the hike as it makes its descent to the creek below. Most of the other faint trails are perpendicular to the road. Also, if you miss this entrance & keep walking the grassy road you will come to a field, which means you've gone about 120 yards too far. *** WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HIKE THIS TRAIL ALONE!!! *** ~~~ UPPER SARAH'S CREEK FALLS If you indeed find the correct trail, about halfway down the trail you will see the upper falls over the ridge on your left. At this point, the pink ribbons lead you left towards the upper falls and orange ribbons lead you down to the lower falls. We tried hiking to the upper falls, but there were a great many obstacles along the way. We didn't make it. The upper falls seem to be in two sections. One long drop where the creek disappears and then re-emerges through a narrow flume-like waterfall. LOWER SARAH'S CREEK FALLS Continue past the split in the trail (it will not be obvious) and follow the ridge on its right side as closely as possible. You will begin to hear the roar of the lower falls and soon see the crest through the trees. You will lose the trail near the point you can see the falls, but continue downhill away from the falls until you find the safest route to the creek. We spotted orange ribbons on two trees leading to the creek. Except for the split from the pink ribbons, this was the only other set of orange ribbons we found. Once you reach the river, you must creekwalk your way left to the falls. I did not find the rocks to be slippery in the creek, however, the yellowish colored slab to the left of the lower falls put me on my butt. That sucker was like oil, so be careful! ~~~ [ THINGS TO KNOW ] Hiking Distance: 1.5 miles (roundtrip) Difficulty: Moderate (I do not recommended for inexperienced hikers) Creek Crossings: YES (directly though Sarah's Creek) Elevation Gain: 412 feet Upper Waterfall Height: Approx 200 feet Lower Waterfall Height: Approx 50 feet Access to top of falls: NO Access to base of falls: YES Pool of water @ base of Falls: YES Sitting areas @ base: YES RESTROOMS: NO PARKING: YES (4+ cars) ~~~ [ FINAL THOUGHTS ] The upper falls are HUGE, but it was nearly impossible to reach with all the downed trees. Lower falls are not as big but still VERY, VERY, VERY IMPRESSIVE. Satellite images show another waterfall about 500 feet downstream from the lower falls. I plan to venture back here to see if I can find it and attempt the upper falls one more time with a machete. Google Earth has increased my adventuresome spirit, because satellite images show me what is out there... it's just a matter of finding my way to it! PLEASE, I can't stress it enough because of the remote off-trail nature of this hike: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HIKE THIS TRAIL ALONE OR WITH CHILDREN!!! It is not a well-marked trail and has the potential of getting you lost. Plus, if you injure yourself help might not come for days since this trail is not popular! A smart idea might be to bring chalk of you own color choosing to mark trees to help you and a partner find your way back. 2020 / 18

As Richard Mentioned in his review, this probably isn't a trail you want to tackle alone. In fact…read moremore than once we got ourselves turned around and placed on a different trail before we realized our error. Lots of back tracking later and we finally found the trail to Sarah's Creek Falls. Before getting to the falls themselves, how do you get to the trail?? By car you're basically getting on Sarah's creek road. Stay on Sarah's creek road until a natural fork in the road is reached. From here take the left fork and follow a dirt road that comes up on your left. The actual parking area for Sarah's creek is basically a clearing that is blocked off by a Road closed gate. This made me concerned about leaving my car, but ultimately it's where you'll leave yours for this hike. From that above paragraph, let's just be clear that the falls trail is a challenge to find, and can also be a challenge to navigate, even to the trail itself. You'll want to walk past the road closed sign and follow the natural curve around. Here's the issue...you will see many smaller trails that look legit, but actually are not. IGNORE these trails (we did not, which added several minutes and steps to our hike). You're going to be looking for a couple of pink ribbons that denote the entrance to the trail to the right. Descend down the trail and follow these pink ribbons that frame the trail along the way. Some of the ribbons have fallen off the tree (we tied them back on as best we could) but they do an okay of taking you where you need to go. I say okay job because the ribbons become very sparse at the Lower Sarah's creek fall trail. This is concerning because you reach the Upper Sarah's creek fall trail first on the left. This is marked great, but there was also lots of path blockers including downed trees and heavy overgrowth. Am I saying this trail is impassable? With effort it may be, but we decided to back track out of there and continue down to the other trail. Going further down to the Lower creek trail, again, the blaze ribbons become sparse, and you really just have to follow your ears. A final ribbon leads to a flowing but shallow creek. Walk through this towards the left carefully, until you're standing directly in front of the Lower falls, which are gorgeous and have a height of approximately 50 feet, flowing into a pool. Be careful because the rocks are slippery but the trail was worth it going down. Going back up the trail and to those initial pink ribbons that showed the entrance to the trail was tough. It was straight up, and in this 1.5 mile in and out trail, the out part will set your thighs on fire. We made it out, and as a bonus tip, don't just go back to your car at the trail entrance, hang a right and walk towards the Grassy knoll to your left. Hear that sound? You can actually see the top of the Upper falls taking a small trail down from that grassy knoll. that gives you a frame of reference of how big the falls are...or basically it's roughly a 200 foot drop. Too bad the upper falls trail was blocked to us! Again guys, this is not a state park and not a well marked or traveled trail. Don't do the hike alone! Going down is no problem at all but coming up is going to work you, so keep that in mind also. Notice as well that while I mentioned the beauty of the falls, I mentioned nothing about the trail it self. Why? It's not a pretty hike, it's overgrown and you're just looking at branches and dirt road. Beautiful falls, overgrown, isolated trails that aren't pretty and are tough getting out of. Worth it? Oh yea!
