We were looking for a company and person to complete two jobs around our house. One job was putting up lattice around a three-season porch and putting in a sub-floor and vapor barrier in that same porch. The other job was to enclose a front porch (with walls, windows, and a door. Now we are very picky when it comes to hiring a contractor. We tend to have multiple contractors come through to give quotes on a job. And I can say without a shred of exaggeration or doubt that Wagner Builders is the absolute best company I have ever hired to do a job at any of the properties I have owned or lived at.
From the beginning Kevin (the owner) was unbelievably accommodating. He was willing to come over pretty the same day that I called him. When he came over he was attentive in listening to our needs and such a engaging person. He didn't talk over our heads or seemed rushed. He genuinely wanted to know what we wanted in our home. As he listened he would give suggestions as to ways we might complete the project and offered ideas without pushing an idea on us. One thing that was very helpful is he explained not only what he would do, but why he was recommending that. For example, many contractors had suggested ways to close off the bottom of my elevated porch. However, the ideas were mainly to completely shut it off in some way. Kevin explained that he wouldn't recommend closing it off as it would block off a vent to the crawl space and that could cause major issues long term under the house. Moreover, he even called about a permit and the requirements for a build right on the spot to make sure we all understood what the possibilities were on our front porch. No one had done that before. To me it showed he really cared about his craftsmanship. He sent us a quote that night (which was much faster than some who came and never even sent us a quote). He wanted to know what our budget was so he could tailor a quote to maximize what we could get for our money and budget.
His quote was clear, itemized, and was well within our budget. He called to discuss the terms and answered all of our questions. Honestly, this is a factor that I really want to highlight. Mr. Wagner is extremely available if there are questions or thoughts. He answered our e-mails, returned calls, and even called us frequently throughout the process to give us updates, progress reports, to ask what we like, what we might not like, etc. I talked to Mr. Wagner on the phone more than any contractor ever. And this is such a great little touch to the level of customer service they provide.
We asked to have some alterations made to the contract and he accommodated that request immediately and sent a new contract over via e-mail immediately. He then came the next day to have the contract signed. As soon as we had the contract signed he began working on ordering the materials. One really thing we really liked was he didn't just go get the basic material you could find anywhere. He went around our house on the outside to look at what was already there and wanted to match the style of the project to match our already existing home. He didn't ask for more money for this. He didn't say it would be harder. He just did it because he felt that was what should be done. Unlike other contractors we have had who simply wanted to give us stock options he worked a customized 4x4 Anderson window into our project that would be matched to the windows we already had. We were so impressed by his attention to detail. As we waited for the project to start, Mr. Wagner made several calls to us to check in with us to let us know what was going on. Again, I cannot say enough about how nice it was to have all the information. Once the work began our satisfaction definitely didn't diminish. The team showed up promptly around 7 a.m. each day and worked quite fast and diligently. There was not a single time we had to ask where they might be, or when they were coming back. Honestly, they were often there before we even went to work. Our back porch was done in essentially one day and the work was extremely well done. There was no mess and honestly they went way further than I thought when it came to items like the lattice. They dug down to make sure the lattice was deep enough to keep all critters out. They also installed extra posts to make sure the lattice was secured. They did this without raising the price or saying "surprise". They did this to make sure it was done right. The front porch was no different. They worked quickly and the quality was astonishing. The siding was perfectly matched to our outside siding. Every step of the process he would call once or twice a day to update us and let us know what was going to be happening next or to ask what we might have questions on.
