We have 2 senior dogs at home, one with terminal cancer. My husband wanted a puppy to have overlap with our seniors, and so that our home would never be without a dog. We found one online, thru Wagging Hearts. I found it a little odd they said we were approved without a single phone conversation with us (our references yes, but not us), but no matter. The foster drove the pup to our home, but the pup wouldn't interact with anyone except the foster and her daughter. No interaction with us, with our dog, nothing. They said she was 'just really spoiled' as she was the last of the litter and was getting all the attention. The foster asked "so, is she a keeper"? I said I couldn't tell, she's not interacting with anyone but her and her daughter, and not even expressing the slightest interest. They step out, and we deal with the puppy crying and scratching at our front door to go follow them. No toys, treats, nothing could console her. I expressed concern over the separation anxiety we were seeing, and no interactions with our dog. We said it was critical the puppy get along with our dogs (especially the younger of our 2). We've not seen our dogs thru to their senior years to make their last years anything but their best. Sue, the foster, said we could return her if it didn't work out. I spoke with Natalie when she took the payment, told her what Sue said, and she said yes, you can return her if it doesn't work out, but you cannot have the $350 adoption fee back. I said that's fine, that my concern is we're looking at a 15 + year commitment, and would like to make sure it's a good fit and they all get along. For nearly 2 weeks, we deal with separation anxiety - now it's not the foster, it's my husband, me, the day care we took her to for socialization, everything was an opportunity for anxiety. We worked thru alot in 2 weeks - she was nearly housebroken, crate trained, but the more comfortable she became in our home, the more she started to reveal aggression towards our dog...biting and snapping at her face, unprovoked, unrelenting and without any warning signals. Four attacks across two days later, we said we cannot do this - someone was going to get hurt. Not just our dogs, but the puppy started to show intensity towards our cat, like she could snap at him at any moment. Then our senior dog started altering her behavior in unacceptable ways to avoid being attacked. No longer in the living room with us, no longer sleeping in the bedroom, etc. I reached out to a trainer I've used in the past, who recommended we return the puppy and 'not look back'. Natalie sent my message to Monica, who told me that attachment to fosters is normal and that she was sure the puppy was just playing with our senior. I told her no, this is nothing like that, and just want to be clear of what we're seeing, and suggested they have their own evaluation done. Monica became increasingly upset, accused me of not talking to a trainer ("I'm going to need the name and number of the trainer you talked to"), and ultimately hung up on me. We had already made arrangements for day and time for the return, and I wasn't sure til I got there what to expect. She took the dog back. Our dog returned to the rest of the house, no longer removing herself from living areas. It's been traumatic, it feels like a death in the family. I believe the dog will be fine, but in another home, maybe as an only dog. I'm also sure the rescue has created their own narrative of who we are, and what happened in our home. I strongly recommend: - research the rescue. There's alot of reviews here I wish I read first (including the hidden ones) - talk to the folks at a rescue before meeting any animals - never let anyone try to 'close the deal' when there are clear reservations There are alot of great rescues in Chicago, you should feel comfortable with them and the process, as much as with the pet. read more

If i could give less than one star, i would. This has been such a hard and heartbreaking week for my whole family. We adopted our beautiful girl on sunday. We had submitted an application for her and without contacting any of our references they told us where to meet her. The foster family was great and super helpful. But then we took her in to get her microchip done and wellness check done on wed at the vet they recommended. I had plans to switch her to our local vet that my neighbors all love, but trusted their recommendation and since the microchip would be there, i was willing to drive the 45+ min to get that done. I communicated to Michelle of when our appt was and to confirm the microchip would be there. She assured me it would. Well, i arrive and its not. And the vets version of a wellness check was anything but. The staff was friendly but he was condescending and not thorough and did not properly explain things. So afterwards i called Michelle to share with her my concerns about the vet and that the microchip was not there. Later, after making an appt with a new vet for her next appt for her suture removal (she had just been spayed), i told them about what we experienced at that other vet and they were shocked and concerned. So after not hearing back from Michelle, i contacted the foster mom looking for advice, as i want to help our new family member as best we can. She was super helpful and texted Michelle for us, she was just as shocked about everything as my vet was and my other pup parents were, as i was turning to them for direction with the agency not returning my calls. Fast forward 24 hours, still no returned call. Now, I was orginally thinking they had a vet they were unaware was not doing his job well, but after telling the foster mom they would get back to me that evening and didnt, i was starting wo wonder if i ever would hear from them. So i call Michelle again, praying for the best- life happens. But she turned nasty super fast, as others have reported- talking over me, interrupting me, asking me questions but not letting me answer and being super condescending. I finally stopped her and said "please stop being condescending to me, i am trying to do right by my dog and i would hope that's what you all want to". She proceeds to hang up on me... So I'm left twisting in the wind, assuming I'll never hear from them again, but i still have this contract telling me that i need to microchipped BY THEM and they aren't answering my calls. So, i ask for legal advice. What do i need to do to honor my side of the contract if they won't talk to me. I was told to leave a voicemail with Michelle, my only contact up to this point, saying i need them to turn my call within 24 hours because my dog needs to be microchipped per their agreement and i need that provided to a vet i trust, otherwise if i don't hear back i will consider that claus void and get my own chip. I get a call back from Monica within half an hour yelling at me about how dare i tell them they have to call me back within minutes...again, my voicemail said 24 hours...not minutes. Thats reasonable given they wouldn't give me answers and hung up on me earlier. She threatened to take our dog back and said we had voided our contract. I informed her that i trusted the vet to give me accurate info about what needed to be done and he failed to do so. And the chip had still not been provided per their end of the agreement. I informed her we had no intention of returning our dog to them, we simply don't trust them anymore. She never asked me what had happened, why i was upset. Nothing. Came out the gates yelling at me, accusing me, and threatening me. She is no longer allowed to contact me, they are not allowed to step foot on my property, or have anything to do with my dog. I have never been treated this appallingly or unprofessionally in my adult life. My conscience is clear. My dog is safe now with us. I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy. I feel so bad for the dogs in their "care". read more

I adopted a three year old dog from wagging hearts.They lied straight to my face. They told me that my dog was not aggressive towards other dogs. However ever anytime my dog sees another dog she barks all the time,pulls me. Which is a big problem to have. I called them and told them that she was acting this way, they were very rude and were not helpful whatsoever. They also sold to me underage, I am only 18 and I asked them three times if that was okay they said it was no problem and they took my ID. Also they lied and said they talked to my parents which is a complete lie.They are also really expensive they sold her to me for over $600 plus she's 3 years old.I would never adopt a animal from here! Trust me there are better places to adopt an animal. read more

We submitted an application and heard nothing. 4 days later I reached out and was told the dog we were interested in had a meet and greet with another couple but had our application right there. She asked me what we were looking for and said a new litter would be there in a few days and they would email us photos before they go public. 6 days later I see the new litter getting posted and never got my email. I contacted them right away and i received an email back rather quickly with names and pics of the dogs. Within 5 min I responded back with which puppy we wanted to meet. That's where communication stopped. My vet wasn't contacted nor were any of my references. It was like we never submitted an application and the puppy we wanted was adopted. We've adopted at 2 other shelters and am blown away about how poorly this shelter handles their adoptions. read more

Our family tried and tried to adopt a dog since March (along with the rest of the country apparently). Finally our application was accepted by Wagging Hearts. The volunteer apologized for the delay (we were just happy anyone got back to us since no other shelter did). We didn't feel rushed and all of our questions were answered. Please don't adopt from here, these people are only in it for the money. They are for profit only, (per their email to me) usually rescues for non-profit but Not this one. If I would have know I would not of rescue from here. They charge $350.00 for a pup under a year and don't care who takes them. They never called my references or vet. 5 months later I contacted them as I was having problems with biting my granddaughter and attacking my cats and was told I didn't know how to train her right. All my other dogs are just fine, they listen very well. They said it could take a while to get her removed from my house. 3 weeks later, they had people lined up to meet her with 2 small kids which I told them not good with kids, but did they care NO!!! and when we were set to meet for them to take back all of sudden they said the rabies tag and vet paper work wasn't enough, that I needed a certificate of rabies which I thought would be tags and vet receipts. Everyone that I talked to gave a different story, they are not organized in what they tell you. Meanwhile they said "she was my problem not there's." But I couldn't find a home for her they had to for the money. They just wanted the money so they can get a paycheck. But if they were to take her they would charge again another $350.00 for her. And they money I laid out for her surgery I'm out. They do not keep all their animals in fosters they are in a kennel where they are boarded. They just wanted the money so they can get a paycheck. I call this a MOBLIE PUPPY MILL. They get animals for almost free and then charge a large fee. A rescue should stand behind their rescue if you need to rehome your pup for safety reasons. So before you get a pup from here think twice, then think again. I will always now look for non-profit rescues. read more

Went to see them on Saturday, saw a pup we fell in love with, so we filled out a app and started the adoption process. To our surprise they asked us if we wanted to take her within a half hour of filling out the app (they still did a home inspection, and we told them it be best to take her after the spay) but they were admiment we could take her that day. The next day she was spayed and we took her home, all they said was that she had to go back to the vet in 3 days. After a day of having her we come to find out she has fleas, more surprising is the vet told us helping paws was told this when she got spayed. Now this wouldn't have deterred us from taking her but it's shitty they didn't let us know so we could have contained it and kept her away from are other pup. Mind you my guess is this is why they were pushy for us to take her despite there website saying no same day adoptions. read more

Adopters beware! My family and I adopted a dog from this rescue and within the week it was clear it was not going to work, the dog was "cat approved" (notice the quotes), yet ran into glass doors to get to my cats in a "I'm going to eat you" kind of way. He also was aggressive towards ALL family members, nothing triggered it was just random attacks. When we told them this they acted as if it was OUR fault, we returned the dog after 2-3 weeks of us trying to work with them to return him. read more

Wow, maybe it comes down to who you work with, as they are a foster-based rescue. On Aug. 31, I adopted a charming mixed-breed, and the foster family was in Evanston. Martha, the foster 'mom' checked my references, my vet (in Brookfield), has followed up with me, and worked with me all through the process. She was fantastically helpful, providing a 'foster-to-adopt' arrangement, to ensure there wouldn't be an asthma problem with the dog (a 1 yr old Italian Greyhound mix, from KY). She wanted to be sure the fit was perfect between the dog and our family. And the local vet they use, in Des Plaines, he is extremely caring and worth the drive up from La Grange. Gemma has been a huge blessing in our lives, and I am completely grateful to Wagging Hearts. read more

If you're looking for a specific breed or size, age, she will be on the lookout and let you know when a puppy or dog comes that you've been looking for. I recommend Martha for anyone looking for a dog. She is friendly and flexible, highly organized and loves to find good homes for her dogs. She often has puppy parties where you can just come get to know the dogs, enjoy refreshments and meet other people. We've adopted 2 dogs - one from Adopt a pet online, and our second from Wagging Hearts. The fee was the same for both places. Martha is just great. read more

We adopted a 4-month old puppy from Wagging Hearts. The puppy received training, socialization and a home that was looking for a family dog. We've had him for eight months and he has started being aggressive and biting. Per the contract I signed with Wagging Hearts, "if at anytime Adopter decides to forfeit ownership of the animal, Adopter will contact WH for assistance in placing Animal in new home." I contacted via text on 12/11/18 and when I didn't receive a response a few days later I sent an e-mail and still no response. I finally was able to reach Linda (the director) via phone on 1/4/19 and she told me her resolution was that I put the dog down. She was pretty gruff and had no interest in helping me, and told me she didn't want to get sued. Her reason for not responding the first time is that I sent the text at 11 pm (which I did because that's when the dog tried to bite my son). They do an extensive application to adopt, even calling all the references provided. Now that I've contacted them with an issue, they don't even bother to check or confirm the issue and just tell me to put the dog down. The volunteers were warm and very responsive during the adoption process but once the adoption takes place, you're on your own. read more

Wagging Hearts is one of the most transparent, reputable rescues in the nation. I personally have worked with them for 2 years. Not only do they rescue the pups in need, they also take in the very sick, blind and deaf pups, making sure they all get proper vet care and the perfect home. They are to be congratulated on the work they do. They have helped many rescue organizations in need also, taken in pups when other rescues are full, brought truckloads of food, toys and treats to these organizations. read more

Martha did an amazing job finding us the perfect pup to adopt. At the time, we had three children under 8 and she steered us toward THE perfect dog for our family. She works very hard to find foster families and permanent homes for countless homeless pups. Yes there is an adoption fee, but MOST shelters require an adoption fee to pay for vet care, etc. Also, our adoption fee included the cost of neutering our dog, so long as we used a specified vet. read more

Adopters beware (again). This agency is completely disorganized and does not communicate with any one properly within the adoption process. How they are still an organization baffles me. I still encourage people to rescue through them and put up the hassle so that dogs can properly be removed from their care. They do not get to know their foster dogs, and give people false information as you just get the animal adopted. They do not do home visits with potential adopters which is standard protocol. They are supposed to be experts on the animals that they rescue as to properly pace them into a forever home, and the fail to take the necessary steps to do that. I adopted my 2 year old boxer/pitbull (Wesley) mix in 2015. He has become such an amazong part of our life. I have nothing but respect for Wagging Hearts and the individuals who volunteer for the organization. Although I am in Georgia now, I previously lived in Illinois and I am so thankful for Wagging Hearts. The organization is obviously more interested in the animals they save then people who have their own agenda, and their history proves how successful they are in finding the right homes for the animals they help. With Wagging Hearts it's not about finding ANY home or utilizing ANY foster - it's about finding the perfect fit ... however long that may take. The rescue experience and the professionalism that the Wagging Hearts volunteers display is amazing. I'd love to be able to be a part of their wonderful rescue group, but thanks to my experience with Wagging Hearts I am now a full-time foster. As to another recent review, I'm not quite sure how someone's experience with this group could possibly be so negative. Perhaps the individual doesn't understand what rescue is and how rescue groups function. Or perhaps the individual is simply a negative person and /or has a personal agenda. In any event, I don't understand how someone who is supposedly from Washington, D.C. My boyfriend and I just adopted our first puppy from here and could not be happier. Wagging Hearts works hand in hand with an amazing vet in Des Planes, where we actually took Jalin to be checked out the day after adopting (they are open 7 days a week) and they had nothing but good things to say about the condition Jalin was in. The foster parents were amazing and you could tell that they had cared so much for the dogs that were in their care. I adopted my deaf Pitbull from wagging hearts! We had just lost our 16 year and I was very weary of getting another dog. I went into Petsmart and Wagging Hearts was having an adoption event, outside was this beautiful white pitbull with the cutest pink sweatshirt on. I saw her and knew she was mine. But never having worked with a rescue before I didn't know what to expect because I had always heard how hard it was to adopt a pet. My worries were immediately at ease as I met Monica. She walked us thru the whole process with such patients. We filled out our application. Luckily my husband was at my parents down the road because he had our other dog there with him so he could bring him down because Wagging Hearts made sure they were a good match before they trusted me with this little lady. Then when that went well Monica came to my house to do a home visit. Thank goodness she did this that day because I didn't want to leave without her. Monica was so great with us, she was also Vera's foster mom and taught her so many hand signals so training her was a breeze! Monica and Wagging Hearts have kept in contact with us and when she tore her ACL back in November (after having her for 13 months) Wagging Hearts helped us with talking to a good vet and with after care of her! I recommend EVERYONE adopt from Wagging Hearts. They truly love their animals and make sure they are going to their real forever home. read more

My review is strictly from a foster aspect. I refuse to give any starred review; as someone mentioned that the agency love animals, but people should be put in the equation as well. That is well said. I have thought long and hard about writing a review with the way I was treated, and can no longer discount how this situation has negatively affected my life. So here is my personal story as to why I will never foster again or recommend this rescue agency to anyone. I decided to foster a dog to help those in need, and I have a friend whom seems to get great joy in doing so. So I picked up my foster girl and she was the most gentle, passive dog I had ever met. I have another dog and she was great with her as well. When I picked her up I was given two bags of food as the agency is to provide food, and any medical care that is needed when you foster. No one ever called to see how things were going, or if I needed anything. Maybe I was expecting too much, but this was my first time fostering. About 2-3 weeks in I noticed that her nipples became very large, I thought she maybe pregnant. I was told not to worry, she was only in heat (which they never told me), and once she was fixed they would return to normal. I had no other choice, but to believe what I was told. A few more weeks went by and she became inactive and her stomach began to grow. Again, I contacted them and was told she is not pregnant, and not to worry about it. When an adoption event took place and I decided to go with her. There were mostly puppies there, and it felt very awkward to be there and people were looking at my foster and you could plainly see the look on their faces that they were not going to consider adopting a pregnant dog. The person that was in charge of the agency came up to the dog pulled her hind legs up and stated twice that she was not pregnant. I told her then, "She is awfully fat," and she responded with, "If she is pregnant she got pregnant on your watch." My other dog happens to be a female as well. I was told that I had to stay at the adoption event as she needed to have exposure to be adopted. Another person that works for the agency came up to me and blatantly said "she's pregnant". No kidding. She told me to leave and I did. The next day I actually took a video of her moving belly. Poor thing never got any medical care and I felt like I had no support. I would have taken her to my vet, but financially could not afford it. The nice person who advised me to take her home gave me some great advice on how to deliver puppies. I watched a video and read up on it. I have never done it before, nor ever saw puppies being delivered. Two days later my foster dog delivered 8 puppies. Surprisingly all healthy and no issues. There was only a few texts between the agency and me about how many puppies, and what their gender was. It took me to send another text seven days later to see if there is anything I should know. The only response was to make sure my foster has plenty of food and water. In the next 3 weeks I dealt with the mom constantly having diarrhea and pooping in my house along with the mess of the puppies. No call, no contact from anyone. After three weeks I had to contact them, and tell them they had to pick up my foster mom and her puppies. I was very worried about the mom because she was becoming very skinny. After they were picked up I felt empty, but also very happy that I could be there for my foster dog. I wanted her to feel safe and that her puppies were in good hands. I loved that dog. I have just recently found out that two of the puppies have passed. I was devastated. I have reached out to her foster mom to see if there was anything I could do, and to give my support. No one will return my messages or texts. I tried to do a good thing and in my heart I feel I gave my foster all the love I could and hopefully gave her some comfort being there for her. I tell people that this was the worst and best experience of my life. Unfortunately, it was the people that made this experience what it was, and the dog that will forever hold a special place in my heart. I don't want to turn people away from Wagging Hearts because as we all know this is about the animals, but be very careful when dealing with the humans. read more

I encourage anyone who considers rescuing from this organization to be very, very careful. I adopted a beautiful little dog from them who had to be put down 5 weeks later. On their website they talk about checking the adopter out very carefully; they never called any of my references; the dog was to be dewormed -- NOT; the dog had an upper respiratory infection; they indicate they will be in contact with the adopter sometime after the adoption to see how things are going -- I have still not heard a word from them. I adopted the dog on June 19, 2014. I sent them a letter to tell them what happened and request some financial assistance with the expense and the fact that they overcharged me on the adoption fee; the letter was refused and returned to me. I had put down a wonderful companion dog of 15 years at the end of April. The lady I was working with at Wagging Hearts knew this as well as having met me at one of her adoption events so knowing I am a senior (usually equates with fixed income). With the financial burden here, the emotional toll has been tremendous. Maybe this organization loves animals but people should be considered in the equation as well. This dog seemed as though she would be perfect for me. She was perfectly housebroken; knew some commands; friendly with everyone (especially men); old enough I felt she and I would last about the same amount of time; it seemed so right but has been so much heartbreak. Most of their events seem to be at the Petco in Round Lake Beach. PLEASE be cautious and I especially encourage caution if you are adopting a pet for a child. This has been very hard for me but I truly would hate for a child to go through this. read more

If I could put zero stars I would. Went to a dog fair at the dog park fell completely in love with a puppy they had. I have never adopted a dog so I was completely uneducated to the process. We had a house visit the same day and everything went fine. We couldn't keep the puppy right away since she needed to be spayed. I was supposed to receive a call on the way home from the vet to see if she was able to be picked up that day - I left a message and didn't hear back until almost 7pm... two days later we noticed the puppy has fleas. Today is our third day with her and had to get a wellness check at their vet, the doctor confirmed she has fleas and she had fleas when she was being spayed! We were never told by Wagging Hearts that there was even a possibility she had fleas. I called Wagging Hearts to ask why they didn't inform us first - since now we have to sterilize our entire house to make sure the fleas are gone. And all they could say is it is in the disclosure. Also on the phone she was extremely rude and didn't seem like she even cared about the problem at hand. When they went over disclosure they didn't explain what any of the treatments are or why they were given. And as i said before this was my first time adopting. I strongly believe they are only in it for the money. I would never adopt from them again. I would have high caution if you do decide to adopt with Wagging Hearts read more

Stay away. We adopted a puppy from them in the beginning of August for my 6 year old son. They claimed she was small and calm because it was her personality. They said she did have worms before but she was dewormed. Before we even got her home, she was coughing constantly. She was so skinny that you could literally see her bones. It appeared she had been starving. We brought her to the vet and she had a severe upper respiratory infection and coccidia. At Wagging Hearts expense, we treated both (which, btw, coccidia is pain to deal with). Then last week we brought her in to the vet to be spay and found out she has roundworms (i.e. the worms were never gone). The best news? Kids can get it too, but they aren't concerned if the kids are older than 7....and I have a 3 and 6 year old! :( Also, highly contagious to other animals (so now my 10 year old dog who has never had worms has it) and once you have the worms in your yard, I'm told it is extremely difficult to get rid of the eggs and they will keep reinfecting themselves. When I contacted Natalie at Wagging Hearts the first time regarding the upper respiratory infection and coccidia (left untreated in puppies can cause death - also highly contagious), I never got a response. After I went back to the vet, I tricked Natalie into calling me back by leaving a vague message with just my name and number. She said the director would call me. She never did. Yesterday I received a message from the vet that they never called them back and would now be charging me for the roundworm medication. I called the main line this morning asking for the director to give me a call (again vague with just my name and number). Linda, the director, called me and was EXTREMELY rude. Said they cannot guarantee worms and they won't cover anything. I talked about the fact that she had an upper respiratory infection and she claimed that she spoke with the vet and confirmed that was from a vaccine. LIE, since they've been trying to reach someone at your organization for 5 days. They don't care about the animals or the people adopting them. I wish I would have read these reviews before adopting from them. Now my son is attached and I have a sickly animal who is making my other dog (and possibly my children - pediatrician says we need to wait 2 weeks to test them) sick. I'm note sure why these people are a rescue since they clearly do not care. read more
