For the high adoption fee of nearly $800, I assumed I was getting a well-vetted dog. Unfortunately, like many other reviewers here, that was not the case. It's interesting how many of the others had the same order of experiences. Usually, when there is such an obvious pattern, an organization would take responsibility and do the work to fix the issue. That doesn't seem to be the case with Wagging Hearts.
I adopted my dog (listed as "Tristan") on Dec 7, 2024. From the moment I walked out of the pet store where we met to complete the adoption process, his poop was soft, almost runny. I initially thought it was the nervous poops from all the changes since he was still young. The very next morning I saw live worms in my new dog's poop. Initially, Linda agreed to help with the worms and had someone meet me at a local pet store that gave me a dewormer for "Tristan". That's where the helpfulness stopped.
On 12/11 I went to the free vet visit they offer (which by the way, is only offered at locations about an hour or more from Northern Lake County). There he tested positive for roundworms and coccidia. This is 3 business days after the adoption took place.
The vet gave me more meds to take care of the remaining worms ( infestation was SEVERE) and the coccidia, I got probiotics for the continuing soft stools. My dog's stool NEVER improved. Their vet told me to give it about TWO weeks to give his GI tract time to recover from everything, I tried to wait the whole time, but I ended up going to my local walk-in clinic 2 days shy of two weeks on 12/23 when I noticed bright red blood drops in his stool. The stool sample at that time tested positive for Giardia. A simple Google search will tell you "The incubation period for giardia in dogs is typically 5 to 16 days. This means that it takes 5 to 16 days for the parasite to multiply and become detectable in the dog's stool". This would mean that if he acquired it just days before the adoption, he would NOT have tested positive for it at the FREE vet visit. I'd like to be clear, from the moment I brought my dog home, his stool consistency NEVER improved even after the meds from their free vet visit.
JUST as in other reviews here on Yelp, when I brought this up to Linda, she tried to say that the Giardia was likely acquired when he was already in my care because it's "common" and can be picked up from "wildlife droppings or contaminated water." Same schpeel as others were fed. Thing is, I've had dogs (even puppies) at this property for the last 20 years, and not ONCE has any of them picked up worms or Giardia from my yard, there's hardly any wildlife here, but that didn't deter her from saying it was NOT picked up while he was with their foster because his "foster brothers and sisters" were all "healthy" with negative stool samples. I don't have proof of that, so these are just words to me. And review after review, of the same timeline of infestations proves quite the opposite.
I dealt with a sick pup for months. He couldn't hold his bowels at the worst of it, having poop accidents in the house even when I was taking him out EVERY two hours in the coldest part of the winter, around the clock. Sometimes he'd want to go out to poop, and he would try but all that came out was blood droplets. I was in and out of the walk-in clinic multiple times per week after the giardia diagnosis just trying to give my pup some relief. I asked Linda for SOME reimbursement for the vet costs and meds. She reiterated that the Giardia was likely acquired when he was in my care, so they are not responsible. I would email her, she would CALL me. Finally, I asked her to only email me, and she stopped replying. It took until 2/14 for the stool to come back Negative. An additional $500 consisted of: stool sample testing every week and 4-5 more rounds of meds - I lost count. Round-the-clock poop breaks, when a normal healthy puppy would be able to go 4-5 hrs between, at 5-6 months of age, the need to sanitize his kennel/bedding and the floor every other day to ensure no giardia cysts fell off his butt in our home. I was going so far as wiping his butt after poops, to try to ensure he couldn't reingest cysts (eggs) if he got itchy. The poop from the yard was picked up after each round. I sprayed a diluted bleach solution when each poop was picked up and had to alternate potty areas. And it still took me almost 3 months of hard work and my dog's quality of life suffering to finally be rid of the Giardia that he had since I adopted him. Wagging Hearts never took responsibility, never replied to my last email and clearly, is not in this line of work for the right reason. They are in it for money. And looking back, it makes sense. They had a high number of small puppies for a rescue. Adoption fees $795+ I should have read reviews and done my research BEFORE giving this "rescue" an obscene amount for a sick puppy.
