Tucked away in the town market arcade is Waffles. This is a full service British cafe buzzing with the chatter of the locals. I didn't look for waffles on the menu as I was completely staggered by the size of their scones.
In the great tradition of 'Elevenses' I had a Cornish pastie and then one of the scones that are baked every morning, both were delicious. The girl at the counter called everyone 'my love' (very West Country) and there were lots of smiles and nods as we found a table next to a group of gentlemen, who were bunched into a pine semi circular booth.
One of these gents leaned over and told us the tale - they are all cancer survivors and meet their twice a week. He also told us a lot about his life as a house painter and asked a bunch of cheeky questions which were very nosey and very funny.
Far from the twee tea shops which litter the towns and villages of England I felt like we had stumbled into a real slice of life. And it was worth the trip just for the Mega Scone. read more
