Tucked away in an assuming strip plaza in S.E. Calgary, Ahinke is a Nigerian-Canadian fusion…read morerestaurant that specializes in brunch items. I went in with high expectations, and in some ways they were met, and in others I felt a bit let down. Firstly, the interior is lovely, with lots of warm wood tones albeit a little dim. The server (who was also the cook? Not sure) was attentive and wanted us to have a good experience. She suggested we try the more traditional Nigerian side of the menu, so we did. The jollof rice arancini was quite good, though I wish I could've tasted the jollof flavor more. The Nigerian shawarma wrap was massive and saucy; I liked that the pita wrap was grilled and crunchy. The shrimp fried rice wasn't my favorite however. The total came out to $72 before tips, which I felt was a bit expensive. I would want to come back and try the brunch items to see if I'll have a different experience!

I was in Calgary for just a few hours (stopover for a road trip), but I knew I wanted to try this…read morerestaurant after seeing them online. The menu is a mix of Nigerian and Canadian dishes. I got the suya chicken and waffles. Suya is a type of seasoning (you can purchase the seasoning to take home), which added a nice heat to the dish. It was served with two fluffy buttermilk waffles, peppercorn sauce, a poached, and hollandaise. It felt like getting chicken and waffles (but better and spicier) and an eggs benedict (cause of the poached egg and hollandaise sauce) in one dish. It also came with this tropical bliss salad, which had a nice combo of veggies and fruit and was really good. My original plan was to also get some puff puff to go, but I was way too full after my dinner. I was here on my own, so I got seated right away, but the space is smaller and I imagine it fills up quickly. If you're coming here with a group I'd make a reservation. Staff was nice, the restaurant was clean, and the food was delicious and a good deal for the price point. The only downside for me is I don't live in Calgary, but if I did I'd be visiting Ahinke's on the regular. It will definitely be a go to restaurant on my next visit.

Funny enough the intention was not to go to this restaurant. I was attempting to enter a different restaurant but it was closed for the day so I gave bubble waffles a shot. I ordered the duck laksa and it was amazing. For $16 you get a lot of duck, most restaurants will only give you half the amount of duck. It also includes a drink. Overall the food was yummy and it's definitely a place I would try again soon. The only downside of this restaurant is the plastic. I wish they would serve their food with normal dishes because when you eat at a restaurant it's not always fun to eat your food and plastic bowls and a flimsy plastic spoon. Overall I was very impressed with this restaurant I will definitely come back soon.

However, we were in the area so my sister suggested making a pitstop for dessert. We dropped in on a Tuesday afternoon (around 1:00pm). It's a tiny shop; currently only allowing one person/family in at a time. There was about 20 flavors to choose from (seasonal and summer specials). Sad that you currently can't sample any flavours. Lime cilantro sorbet (that wasn't listed) peaked my interest. - Double scoop ($8.00) - we added a waffle one ($1.00) and decided on the sour cherry and guava papaya sorbet as our two flavours. They were very generous scoops. The sour cherry was the winner with real pieces of cherry (a slightly sour bite). Stronger in papaya than guava flavour. I think their sorbet texture could use a bit of work but overall, we were happy campers. - Single scoop ($6.00) - my sister went with the same flavours as we weren't sharing. Always nice when you have the options to choose two flavours in a single scoop. Credit cards only. Massive scoops. 3.5 stars.
