The Acuity Flag is the tallest flag pole in the world holding a U.S. flag. 100 feet taller than…read morethe Statue of Liberty! The pole is 400 feet tall and holds a flag that is 60 x 120 feet. (7,200 sq feet = to the width of a football field). There are 2 different flags that fly, one is 220 lbs (normal conditions) and the other is 350 lbs. flying during harsher weather. Base of pole is 11 feet in diameter and weighs 420,000 pounds! The location is right alongside I-43 and you can see it coming from all directions. The original flag actually fell over a few years ago during some bad weather because the foundation was not strong or large enough. This new one is even bigger and obliviously stronger! The flag is located on the grounds of Acuity Insurance, which has been very charitable to many non-profit organizations, along with Veteran services.

We've visited a few times and the history is really interesting but tough with kids (aside from…read moreduring their gingerbread show which is adorable and fun) because they're not allowed to touch anything. So, while the building houses Girl Scout troops and things, the tours aren't really young child friendly. During the holidays, there is a gingerbread show where you can vote in different categories and that is really fun and very kid friendly.

What a fantastic place to spend the day, walking around the grounds and peering back though history…read morewithin the doorways and windows of these carefully preserved original buildings that were moved to this location and filled with artifacts, and done up like different little shops, a church, a town hall, a toy store, a printer's, a school, a mill, an old caboose. The Galloway House tour includes gorgeous antiques and furnishings of the family. The museum has so many neat things to look at, from arrowheads to vehicles to clothing. Highly recommend a visit (or two at least), it is a beautiful place.

Most of the settlers of Cedar Grove and Oostburg were from the province of Zeeland, although some have lived for a time in New York before catching the westward fever in the 1840's. Here the settler cleared sufficient ground for his new home, which was raised or 'logged up' with the help of neighbors. Inside, wrote Pieter Daane in 1847, 'very many had nothing but a ground floor; stools sawed from logs were the only seats, a chest answered for a table.' One group of about 300 immigrants headed for new homes here in 1847 met with disaster. After completing the long journey from Holland, they were within five miles of their goal when fire broke out aboard the "Phoenix" and more than 200 lives were lost." This site alongside a highway shares the story of multiple tragedies. In addition to the one regarding the fire above, there is another marker nearby that shares the story of the most devastating traffic accident in Wisconsin history which occurred nearby on October 11, 2002 and injured more than 40 and claimed the lives of 10. I learned a lot about Elkhart Lake while I visited! This area of Wisconsin used to host open-road…read moresports car racing in the early 1950s. The Lake Street Walkway pays homage to that history, and you can walk on the very same streets where the car racing used to take place. So, the Lake Street Walkway is a historical landmark, and it goes along Elkhart Lake and near Osthoff Resort. It's a nice little walking path. It's very wide, and can accommodate bikers and walkers and rollers alike. You will find multiple signs around Elkhart Lake just like this one -- each signifying a special spot along the race course.

The Elkhart Lake Historic Train Depot was not open when I visited, but I walked around the outside…read moreof it! I wish I could have explored the interior of this historic railroad station, but alas. I visited the area during a time that was off season, and the depot was closed. Anyway, this town landmark stands in the center of Elkhart Lake in the Village Square. It houses original depot furnishings, clippings, photos and memorabilia that chronicle the history of this resort community. The train depot was once Elkhart Lake's main transportation that brought trains full of vacationers, race enthusiasts, gamblers and gangsters from all around the Midwest. This landmark is located in the middle of town, so it's hard to miss. Just look for the big Elkhart Lake sign!

Another one of Wisconsin's gems. This State Park is an absolute blast to hike. The loop is…read moreapproximately 4 miles that take you up and down and around another section of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Plymouth. A set of long stairs usher you up to the tower and that is where we started our journey. We climbed to the top and what a sight it is to see. This tower is high up as it sits on the crest of a hill. Amazing and a bit scary all the same time when you get to the top. Bring your pup cause this place is a perfect little spot to hike thorough with them. Trails are well marked and walking through the forest here is a bit surreal as you are led through windy twists and turns that are littered with rocks and trees and so much nature it is just a pleasure to experience. We drove up from Milwaukee and it takes about 50 minutes to get here. When heading home I suggest taking the scenic route back and driving by Long lake and through the country side of Wisconsin. Lot's to see and just an enjoyable jaunt all around!

My wife's uncle who grew up in the area told us about this old tavern run by the friendly owner Nic. They went to high school together. We were on a tour of family landmarks and stopped here. We were surprised it was open since we were warned the hours were erratic. No one was in the place on a Saturday afternoon except for Nic eating lunch at the bar. We explained our relation to him and then proceeded to have a beer some chips and a long conversation with him. He is super friendly and the beer was cheap and cold (only two kinds on tap). The place is dark, with peeling paint on the ceiling and a side room that could use a garage sale. There is tons of Packer and other sports memorabilia on the walls. The Mirror Bar has seen better days but it was fun to stop in to see a rural tavern that might not be around too much longer.
