Just terrible. Inexcusably bad…read more The CD player broke in my car, forcing me to listen to the radio and I was shocked at what's happened to radio, so I landed on WDET and it's no better. They used to play music, actually had some decent content until they hired somebody who knew better and it went to all talk and canned NPR content (translation: what you heard in the morning was the same thing you'd hear in the evening). Now they've gone back to music but it's the worst music you could imagine. And here's something I've learned about the music on public and college radio: it's all from a playlist, often a more rigid playlist than commercial stations adhere to, and there's a reason none of it is considered "popular." So I did some surfing, turns out the guy who knew better and ruined the station embezzled money, not enough money to make it worth doing but that's where your contriburions went. Now I play the Canadian public station, I can't say I listen as I usually keep it low, it's not much better but if they do something worthy of attention I turn it up.

What irks me is they are crying foul now that the Trump Administration is threatening to cut off their funding, but they NEVER have a good word to say about the administration!! NPR's reporting is so blatantly biased and one-sided!! They don't know what it means to deliver a balanced, wholesome newscast!! If I was President Trump I would cut off their funding too since I have NEVER heard them say a good word about him!! Are there things I don't like about the current administration, of course. But they are doing some good things, as well, but you will NEVER hear about it on this station or it's affiliates!! Time to grow up WDET and stop crying about federal funding cuts that you brought upon yourself!! If you would get back to fair and unbiased news reporting you wouldn't be in this situation!!

Sorry, but the only cities that actually play a little more real music these days are NYC, Chicago, and Miami. There may be a few others but I don't know them. WJLB just plays the same stuff over and over again. Soulja Boy this, Lil' Wayne that and ending with a lil Ne-Yo's newest single at night. It's just sad, really, I'm a music fiend and I'm from Chicago originally and I get around this nation and I can say that Detroit radio is real bad for a music fiend and WJLB is no exception! In fact what I hate the most is when they time release singles off of the SAME album like months apart just to spread the momentum for the album out. So corporate run! It's not about music at all, it's about album sales. And what's this Kid Cudi's "Day & Nite" being "new on the streets" in April - I had that song like back in December of 2008, lol. It's a shame. The same goes for Channel 955, they're probably the worst at this & "Hot" 102.7. In fact the only station I like that actually plays a variety of music and stays true to its genre is 89X!!!! Detroit, stand up I urge you. Stand up and demand better music. Either that, or use Pandora and download mp3's and make your own CDs.

WCBN is the University of Michigan's non-commercial freeform radio station that's run by students…read more What they focus on is bringing things on the radio that you normally wouldn't hear on other stations. My favorite night is late Saturday nights, they usually play some excellent hip hop if you catch it at the right time. By "nomally wouldn't hear", I'm not talking about an obscure noise/basement medley/karaoke cover/whatever-else-obscure 24/7 (though maybe sometimes) fest. For instance, just giving it a listen randomly, they were going over some local events (big kid kickball!) inbetween Kraftwerk and Jean Grae. Currently, my good friend Dustin does Freeform on Thursday nights. He knows a lot about music and is a local musician. I've learned a lot about local music and much more through him, and thanks to him I've opened my scope to being more than a hip hop head. Once, he created an entire playlist for me on my birthday -- one of the coolest birthday gifts, ever. I've also taken a walk through the station itself. It's a great place adorned with decades of history on the walls -- Post-Its, scribbin', photos -- along with a well-loved couch and tech stuff like turntables, cassette decks, reel to reels, amps. Those walls are totally made to house sound. If you're curious about a certain DJ, they playlists are posted online. You can also connect through their website -- no need to sit in the car with the top down and an Icee.

As of May 17th, my #1 preset will be something else, and I'll take my 4 hours a day listening habit elsewhere -- probably SiriusXM, online or to my iPod. Big time epic fail, Greater Media Detroit. WRIF fails because it covers everything in a layer of faux-abrasive-tough-guy-posing-as metalhead stylings; but still plays the equivalent to musical diarrhea. Straight from the get-go, WRIF seems tailored for rednecks and NASCAR rallies. Not the cool, REAL kind of rednecks, mind you, who would strap you to a gun rack, dowse you in gasoline, read you the Bible and then flick the match. I love those guys. No, this is more of a rock station for people who enjoy bands like Creed and Puddle of Mudd. Fast food hillbillies who gorge on repetitive rock radio. Consummate middle American consumers, whose knowledge of metal music probably fails to extend past Fred Durst's rantings or Ozzy's "No More Tears". No matter how many "tough guy" nick-names they give their hosts like "Screamin' Scott" or "Moshin' Matt", they can't make up for the fact that they play watered-down garbage passing as metal. This wouldn't offend me nearly as much if they didn't claim they knew the first thing about heavy-effin' metal. Despite what the ignorant tell you, Slayer is not the only metal band, and playing crap like Shinedown, Buckcherry, and Nickelback nearly every hour defines exactly why this station sucks the big one.

Late in the evenings and weekends, there are good long music blocks and less talk. The programming changed a few years ago, for which was a surprise, but welcomed. More top 40 pop and less adult contemporary. A little less repetitive too, compared to other stations. It is, however, not my go to station when I need to get pumped up before a workout. 96.3 WDVD used to be my morning show go-to however, it hasn't been for awhile now. Not because of Allyson's departure but for the lack-luster show that followed her exit. A lot of people were upset she was booted, but I think it was a good move by the station. They had a chance to really kick up the morning show since booting the whining annoying lazy cat lady, but it all fell flat and I stopped listening. The station signal doesn't reach as far or as well as it used to, just a couple years ago, and something happened with our phone access to the radio station, so I don't listen for contests anymore. We can't get through on our phone lines, at all, and I don't get signal reception in downtown Ann Arbor on my regular radio. Listening online is delayed more than 3 minutes during the day, so it's not worth trying for the contests and the online streaming commercials are so long and annoying, it's not worth trying to listen at my desk. I end up turning it off after a couple songs. So lots of changes, not all good nor all bad, just flat. It's still Okay station, when there is reception, it's streaming online and when you just need background noise.

They told me I would get papers in the mail after all the other Florida trips were given away. I waited a while and didn't get anything. I was entered into a smaller drawing and lost. It was very unprofessional and rude. As for the radio show I feel like their personalities are bland to say the least. Also, the Deal Breakers segment is so fake! I don't believe a word of it. I will never listen to the station again! Horrible!!!
