Continuing my series of FM radio station reviews I come to my favorite radio station- 89.9, CBE-FM…read more I attempted to give it its own Yelp listing but Yelp's corporate overlords must have stricken it from the record. See, Windsor CBC TV and radio operate out of the same physical address and so Yelp considers them one and the same - even though I discovered there's two listings for WCSX since some genius considers "Classic Rock" to be a part of the official name. I don't have a broadcast TV and might catch a bit of CBC TV out at my parents condo. I used to prefer their Olympic coverage and aren't much of a hockey fan but definitely prefer them over US coverage. But consider this exclusively a review of 89.9 FM and not the TV station 9 nor the other Windsor CBC radio station which is all talk. (Two public radio stations, one music and one talk! How much better WDET would be if it could branch out like that!) 89.9 is the number one preset in my Jeep and it was in my Ford Freestyle before that and my Ford Explorer before that. I've never heard the Replacements song Left of the Dial on CBE but it definitely captures that spirit with the music they play. Every year I make a huge Spotify playlist featuring music I discovered that year and a hefty amount comes from stuff I hear on 89.9. I often find myself using the Google search a song feature in the ride as music plays that piques my curiosity. The DJs on here have started to feel like old friends and they all seem to have the coolest sounding names: Saroja Coelho, Julie Nesrallah, Odario Williams, Rich Terfry, Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe, Laila Biali, Errol Nazareth and George Stroumboulopoulus, to name a few. I had to look up those spellings, especially Strombo whose full name isn't often used for obvious reasons. The news guy who comes on briefly at the top of the hour has a totally normal sounding name though - Tom Harrington. I find that funny and fitting. Strombo's Sunday night show is great. Different genres, no algorithm though there's always an interview around 9:30, a track or two from Tom Waits at ten and the last hour from 11 on focuses on metal and punk. Laila Biali plays jazz, Errol Nazareth plays world music and Odario plays chill alternative - great nighttime music. I still miss Laurie Brown whose spot he took, a little, but I've grown to appreciate Odario more and more. And the wonderful Ms. Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe has replaced the retired Laurie Brown as my radio crush. I could listen to the smooth, honeyed tones of Ms. Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe's voice all night, even if the show she hosts, The Block, is only on for a couple of hours. She plays urban music from the 60s and even older to present day. I started following her on social media and she sometimes reposts my Instagram stories videos of me driving with The Block bumping. Be still my beating heart! And I never tire of saying that name - Ms. Angeline Tetteh-Wayoe! Friday nights CBC does an hour long deep dive into a classic album with stories about its creation interspersed between the songs. It's Rich Terfry who usually hosts that. Any day, any time I flip on 89.9 there's likely to be something good on and if there's not I got other presets and I can check back in a little bit. It's pretty much knocked WDET out of the box although I still listen to 101.9 some here and there.

Just terrible. Inexcusably bad…read more The CD player broke in my car, forcing me to listen to the radio and I was shocked at what's happened to radio, so I landed on WDET and it's no better. They used to play music, actually had some decent content until they hired somebody who knew better and it went to all talk and canned NPR content (translation: what you heard in the morning was the same thing you'd hear in the evening). Now they've gone back to music but it's the worst music you could imagine. And here's something I've learned about the music on public and college radio: it's all from a playlist, often a more rigid playlist than commercial stations adhere to, and there's a reason none of it is considered "popular." So I did some surfing, turns out the guy who knew better and ruined the station embezzled money, not enough money to make it worth doing but that's where your contriburions went. Now I play the Canadian public station, I can't say I listen as I usually keep it low, it's not much better but if they do something worthy of attention I turn it up.

They have some good music like Wagid's Wednesday night electronic music from 8pm - 10pm!! And some…read morelimited good news programs. What irks me is they are crying foul now that the Trump Administration is threatening to cut off their funding, but they NEVER have a good word to say about the administration!! NPR's reporting is so blatantly biased and one-sided!! They don't know what it means to deliver a balanced, wholesome newscast!! If I was President Trump I would cut off their funding too since I have NEVER heard them say a good word about him!! Are there things I don't like about the current administration, of course. But they are doing some good things, as well, but you will NEVER hear about it on this station or it's affiliates!! Time to grow up WDET and stop crying about federal funding cuts that you brought upon yourself!! If you would get back to fair and unbiased news reporting you wouldn't be in this situation!!

We were listening to viva-radio.com at work and all of a sudden we heard a playist…read more "Is this WJLB?" we asked each other. It was awesome. A DJ had put up a playlist and called it the WJLB mix-tapes, and they were just dubs of Detroit's beloved WJLB. I have love for it.

Detroit radio is totally corporate owned and it's just top 40 and crap all rotated over and over…read moreagain. Sorry, but the only cities that actually play a little more real music these days are NYC, Chicago, and Miami. There may be a few others but I don't know them. WJLB just plays the same stuff over and over again. Soulja Boy this, Lil' Wayne that and ending with a lil Ne-Yo's newest single at night. It's just sad, really, I'm a music fiend and I'm from Chicago originally and I get around this nation and I can say that Detroit radio is real bad for a music fiend and WJLB is no exception! In fact what I hate the most is when they time release singles off of the SAME album like months apart just to spread the momentum for the album out. So corporate run! It's not about music at all, it's about album sales. And what's this Kid Cudi's "Day & Nite" being "new on the streets" in April - I had that song like back in December of 2008, lol. It's a shame. The same goes for Channel 955, they're probably the worst at this & "Hot" 102.7. In fact the only station I like that actually plays a variety of music and stays true to its genre is 89X!!!! Detroit, stand up I urge you. Stand up and demand better music. Either that, or use Pandora and download mp3's and make your own CDs.
