Only a small family run shop but with an amazing selection of all types of books. Because the shop backs onto the collage they do have most course work books or again they will obtain them for you within a few days. Waterstones in Warrington is located in Golden Square Shopping Centre - it is a fairly small branch…read moreof the book chain by their usual standards, but considering it is located in Warrington, which is a small town in Chesire, the UK this can be expected. The store didnt follow the new, updated layout which has been rolled across many Waterstones stores lately so the store didn't have that beautifully excellent contrast of old and new which are usually my favourite parts about Waterstones store. Again, with no staff members on the shop floor and only at the checkouts, especially for a book-store where you should be able to find staff and talk to them perhaps about recommendations, it's a shame this was virtually impossible without holding a queue up of people who already have a book and want to pay etc. They did have some comments from staff members underneath big name and popular books, but not to the extent of other stores - again this was nice to see. A store which surely does need a refurb as it has been left behind compared to other Waterstones branches with the selection being OK at best - despite low staffing levels this store does remain a nice brand to have in Warrington so the brand being here does benefit the city, although this is far from one of the better stores the brand has. 2*

I like it because it's open late (9 or 10pm, I think) and it's handy to tie it in with a visit to Borders bookstore, which is just a few doors down.

The layout is easier to understand, and the lighting is better than Bold Street, maybe because it's a fairly new store like Liverpool One. It's a large square shape in terms of interiors and they have an impressive variety and volume of stock for a relatively small branch. The stuff in their 2 for £10 on CDs (an ongoing thing all year round) is better than a lot of what you can find in their shops in town and their staff are more helpful and friendly as well. It's not too far from town; about 30 mins on the 82 or 86 bus services. They also have a lot more stock out the back and things you may not realise such as they do still sell CD walkmans, so always ask!!

As an English and Philosophy student, I quickly found that the excuse "I've not done my work because the shop didn't stock that particular book" fell on deaf ears - my tutors would take their reading lists over to Blackwells at the start of semester and make sure there were enough copies ordered in. Hence everyone began crying poverty and the new excuse was "I couldn't find it online/in the library" - much fun ensued. Anyway, as an educational bookshop Blackwells is pretty damn good, and as it also stocks used books for more affordable prices, it's hard to find an excuse for why you've not got the books these days. Whether it's a certain book you require or not, the bookshop makes decent browsing. With the upper floor also hosting a café, it is an ideal place to share a drink or muffin with colleagues whilst on your lunch break. Since it is a shop dedicated for students, they do student discount offers if you have a valid student ID card. Plus, if you have any unwanted books, you can trade them in for store vouchers provided the book is in good condition and on request by Blackwell's. In addition to books, you will find other items such as small gifts, stationery and audio CD's.

It would be no good for specialist choices and tends to mainly cater for the passer by who nips in and may want the latest celebrity cook book. The shop is quite big and the books are seperated into different catergories as you might expect. The prices are quite good because as already mentioned this place sells cheapish books of the celebrity kind along with sports books, a few biographies etc. It cannot rival somewhere like waterstones for the wide range of choice that that shop offers but since there isnt one in the town then this is probably the best book shop in the town.

The Works is they type of book shop where you can always pick up a good bargain or two. Dont expect to find the latest releases in the bestsellers list as most of their stock is last seasons; which is why its so cheap! They sell a good range of calendars which I love and diaries too. The Works also sell a huge range of arts and crafts materials which are fantastically priced! Huge tubs of gesso from £4.99, acrylic paints for only £1.99, artists canvases, paint brushes and lots more! They also sell a good range of card making materials with blank cards and stickers. Additionally they also stock some good art books which are normally top price in proper book shops; cant you tell I cant resist a bargain!! Great shop! Staff always rushed off their feet, mad busy but worth putting up with the queue for the bargains.
