I asked for dressing on the side of my salad and they happily obliged while other mom-and-pop restaurants seem to take a slight offense at that in Germany... but I can't totally abandon my Californian health habits just because I am travelling! It was crowded when I went today (the 30th) but was almost empty last year (12/31). You pay 50 cents to use the restroom but save the ticket so you can be refunded via your check. Also after you can take a refreshing hike around the perimeter of the lake, which takes about 90 minutes to complete. Absolutely gorgeous scenery. Enjoy!

The owner with limited English told us no reservations, just come back. We did just that an hour later and he was able to seat the two of us. The owner suggested a great Riesling. We struggled a bit with the menu in German since the options variety boards and not the typical entrees we had gotten used to so the owner sent out the cook to help us. We ordered a cheese variety plate and a plate with some meat varieties, cheese, and bread. Both included a few pickles and tomatoes. They were exactly the type of light fare we were looking for that night and what we expected at a wine bar. The restaurant was loaded with antique character and fit the image of what you would want a hidden gem winestub in an old city like Cochem to look and feel like.
