Vulcan Steps is a 0.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near San Francisco, California that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. The stairs run from Ord St. on the east side to Levant St. on the west side, and there are several stairs along the Vulcan Street stairs with houses facing the stairs (meaning that the houses have no street access for a car).

Quite a boring and mundane stairway. I was Yelping, after doing the Hidden Garden, and found this one. Meh. I guess I should be happy I knocked out another SF stairway. It wasn't crowded -- so there's a plus? Don't waste your time here unless you're on a mission to complete every SF stairway. No views, the houses are okay, no mosaics. Just nothing that makes this a necessary stairway.

We were on a day of SF exploring and for some reason, my friend really wanted to come here. It's literally a bunch of stairs in between a row of houses. I do admit that it's pretty serene since there's pretty much no one there and it's surrounded by a lot of greens and pretty flowers. It's pretty nice to just walk up the steps and check out people's homes and gardens. Overall, it's really a bunch of stair, but it's a really quiet place and it does have nice plants/gardens surrounding it.

Great set of stairs to truly start to see the type of hidden gems San Francisco has to offer. There are so many steps that it's easy to lose count as your engulfed with awesome architecture of hidden homes. Although it's a great little "shack" of houses to live in I would assume it's difficult, if not physically draining, to reach your home there. Check out the stairs.

A low key walk up stairs that takes you through a little slice of SF rez life. Quiet and full of flowers.

From what I've read, the project came together started in 2003 all thanks to some of the local neighbors that were tired of looking at 163 plain concrete steps to the top of the hill. They collected donations and raised money, selling tiles, which could be customized with names, dates, phrases, anything people wanted to add to make this project come to life. It took two years of raining money, and assembly, "opening" in 2005. The steps really are truly worth checking out, for being over 20 years old, they still have beautiful and vibrant color. I would have though the sun would have faded them, but i guess the color being baked in to the ceramic tiles really holds up. The design, is very stunning, going "from sea to the star", with so much detail, so much creativity. At the top of the steps, you can hike another set of steps up to an amazing 360 degree panorama of the city. Worth the extra 150 or so steps to go all the way up. If you're able bodied, I'd recommend checking this spot out. It's free, and in a residential neighborhood, so parking is also free and easy to find.
