But then when she passed away a few years ago, I read a different birthday date posted on her obituary. So maybe I messed up and always celebrated her birthday one month sooner than her actual birthday, but she never corrected me. She's that kind of person. A kind person, a truly wonderful person, someone who just kind of goes with the flow. KW lived in Nob Hill. She was my dad's (an artist) student when I met her. I admired her as a child because she did things her way even though nothing was easy as I learned as an adult. Her life was somewhat glamorous, but not without difficulties that we all have to go through in this life and although I won't go into too much details, I will always remember her being beautiful and had a harp and cats in her apartment. She lived just a few steps down the hill from the Ritz. I remember her kindness, her appreciation for life which was contagious, her love of cats, especially black cats, and her love of people. She helped a homeless/unhoused person found housing/shelter. She loved this vibrant neighborhood. Nob Hill is famous for many fine hotels, the Grace Cathedral, and tons of history in the many buildings that surrounds it. But in these hills, there are many stories, some known and many untold. Time moves on, continuous, every day with new people and experiences. Many of these stories/experiences --forgotten. Thus why I want to write these thoughts down. Whether you are local or a visitor, Nob Hill has lots to offer. If you want fancy hotels or hole in the wall restaurants, this place has them. Probably most visited as it's nearby to downtown, Chinatown, Fishermans' Wharf, North Beach and Pacific Heights. I hope you enjoy the history of this place, the diversity of food offerings, and the cable car rides, ding ding as each one slides up and down these storied hills.

I love checking out the OCD landscaped trees & marveling at the cleanliness & unique architecture. If you are a blonde woman who wears a ponytail & Lululemon, while you hold your Starbucks cup in one hand, cell phone in another, you are home. Bonus points for a cute small dog. The place feels pretty safe, so add this location to your scared visiting relatives tour guide. A big however, if you're looking to relocate, the district was literally built on sand with a shallow water table. All this explains why the Marina was heavily impacted by the 1989 quake. Many buildings collapsed because the first floors were built on stilts with parking underneath. During "flood season", cars parked along Marina Bld have water covering their wheels. But back to happy thoughts. It's real pretty here.

Lots of local landmarks here including The Palace of Fine Arts, the Wave Organ, Fort Mason, Chrissy Field, and the Yoda Fountain in the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio along with, of course, the Golden Gate Bridge!! There are all kinds of places to eat along Chestnut Street, The Marina Green is a great place to hang out, exercise, bike, or catch some bay views. There is plenty of parking there also. Fort Mason has all kinds of food trucks there. I usually just park at the Marina Green and walk everywhere. It's almost always windy or breezy here, but on sunny days, this is a great area in the city!!!

Lots of dogs around if you're a dog lover (I actually recall more people as their dog's mom or dad as it seems easier to remember the dog's name more than a human). It's close to the GG bridge for wine country trips & pretty much anything that you need is close by (variety of banks on Chestnut Street, a bunch of Italian restaurants, a some good sushi restaurants, fun bars, etc.) Pacific Heights & Japantown (for Japantown groceries at Super Mira or Nijiya) are close by, just a walk up a steep hill, take the 22 bus line, or drive. Some people may hate on it for the Marina bro or Marina chick population but they are not the only residents although their loud conversations on the sidewalk & walking style (taking up the entire width of the sidewalk) is quite annoying. The fog horns blare loudly but sound like a cello to me & will lull you to sleep.

Was taking a fine stroll around Chinatown when I happened upon this tunnel. Brightly painted red…read moreand yellow on opposing ends, it was nights like these I was glad I wasn't driving. Traffic was congested even before the entrance of the tunnel, though the drivers were remarkably patient without honking away. Seems like the "Quiet Through Tunnel" sign actually worked. While these two lanes heading out of Chinatown were backed up, the singular opposing lane was more or less empty. A few other pedestrians were passing through that evening. One was blasting music from his phone, while another was practicing his high notes out loud, so even without the honking their sounds bounced and reverberated. There were scraps of refuse here and there along with an abandoned scooter, but for the most part it was a clean path. Walls included the words Chinatown on one end and Union Square in English and Chinese along with an assortment of koi paintings. I decided to come back in the morning when the traffic was at a minimum and check out the scenery above the tunnel. The stairway going up was smelly and less maintained than the tunnel, though once I was back on the streets, it was a pleasant experience walking downhill to Chinatown.

I have walked through the Stockton Street Tunnel many times over the years. Sadly, over the last…read morefew years, especially during the COVID period, it was poorly maintained, and the sidewalks were littered with garbage. However, a few days ago, while walking toward Chinatown through the tunnel on the left side, I found it much cleaner than it had been in recent years. Granted, I still noticed a few signs of the challenges the area has faced, but overall, the tunnel felt much cleaner and better maintained. The Stockton Street Tunnel opened on December 29, 1914. It connects downtown San Francisco to Chinatown and North Beach. It was designed to avoid the steep climb over Nob Hill. It originally accommodated electric streetcars, but today it carries traffic and Muni buses. Personally, every time I walk through it, I appreciate not having to climb to the top of Nob Hill and then head down the other end. It is also a big help to drivers, like me, who need to drive from one side of the hill to the other.

Its difficult to walk in sand as it is - but when you are walking up and down a steep hill covered in sand it gets even more difficult. This is where the sand ladder comes in handy. If you want to avoid the sand ladder there is a parking lot that is closer to the beach and isn't as steep. I tend to think this is for locals in the area without cars. This sand ladder could also double as a gym. Imagine how its so much more pleasant than a stair stepper in a 24 hr fitness gym all stuffy and stanky.
