"This is the big house street." My little boy was about three or four when he made that astute announcement as we headed up Broadway and drove past the mansions owned by the Gettys, Larry Ellison, Denise Hale, Danielle Steele (when she's not in Paris) and all the landed gentry of San Francisco. While Pacific Heights has always meant wealth, newly monied Millennials tend to live in trendier, hipster neighborhoods like the Mission - see prime example one, Zuckerberg in the Mission's Liberty Hill neighborhood who lives under insane 24-hour security. (So much for "openness" and the world community, eh?) Pacific Heights' tree-lined streets are empty most of the time; it feels like a Hollywood set. Or Beverly Hills. Most of the folks you do see are construction workers, tree trimmers and the occasional nanny strolling with a baby. Many of the mansions are vacant, used to park overseas money from Russia, China and other countries. The houses are furnished and well-lit but no one lives there. It's an odd and sad sight. Sometimes I fantasize I could slip into a back window of one of these lovely houses and make ourselves at home. Who's to notice except the housekeepers who take care of the dust. We can hide under a bed- maybe they'll think the errant items strewn about mean the owners are home but just out shopping at Loro Piana or Shreve. Sigh. Come for the jaw-dropping views of the Bay, sailboats, Tiburon and Belvedere from the top of the hills. See Nancy Pelosi and her grandchildren attend Sunday mass at St. Vincent de Paul (her security is extremely discreet) and drive the "big house street"!

From what I've read, the project came together started in 2003 all thanks to some of the local neighbors that were tired of looking at 163 plain concrete steps to the top of the hill. They collected donations and raised money, selling tiles, which could be customized with names, dates, phrases, anything people wanted to add to make this project come to life. It took two years of raining money, and assembly, "opening" in 2005. The steps really are truly worth checking out, for being over 20 years old, they still have beautiful and vibrant color. I would have though the sun would have faded them, but i guess the color being baked in to the ceramic tiles really holds up. The design, is very stunning, going "from sea to the star", with so much detail, so much creativity. At the top of the steps, you can hike another set of steps up to an amazing 360 degree panorama of the city. Worth the extra 150 or so steps to go all the way up. If you're able bodied, I'd recommend checking this spot out. It's free, and in a residential neighborhood, so parking is also free and easy to find.
