One of the North West's oldest multiplex cinemas, Vue Cinema at Pilsworth is starting to look a…read morelittle dated now. It boasts around a dozen large screen cinemas within the one complex, which show the latest releases alongside returning classics. The age of the cinema is starting to act against it. The seating is on gently sloping floors in the main screens, rather than the newer style banked seating you might find at more modern multiplexes. The sound systems in the smaller screens are also starting to feel dated. As with all cinema complexes, refreshments are offered in the form of ice creams, popcorn, sweets, pick and mix etc etc, but of course they suffer from massive price hikes compared to the high street. It's probably best to either eat before you go or take something with you! Vue cinemas do offer good deals for kids, and they honour the Orange Wednesday 2 for 1 offer. Saturday mornings are given over to cheap family showings, which can be good value. The cinema chain does lack a monthly membership option, which is not ideal for the regular visitor or for people who want to go to filsm multiple times - it can get expensive - I'd recommend the Cineworld Unlimited card for that demographic! One area that is well catered for at Vue Bury is parking. The cinema is part of a large complex which includes Asda, a number of good restaurants (pizza hut, frankie and benny, chiquito) and a bowling alley. The cinema is due to be moved to Buy town centre's new development in 2009/10 so get there while you still can!

The staff are equipped with a knowledge of film and an enthusiasm for the art of cinema. I grab a couch, remove my footwear and use the cushions to get comfy. An alcohol-free G&T is discretely served to my seat-side table. Films are often personally announced just ahead of the Kaplinsky certificate and after the trailers. In Screen 1 the curtain draws and renounces and the lights go up, just at this moment, like the old days. My membership gets me a free supper for Throwback on Sundays (modern classics) and the lounge areas between the screens are worthy of experiencing for dining even if you're not up for a movie. Classic Modernist furnishings align to the Bauhaus movement / The International Style and serve to complement the building's architecture and history. Clean lines. Stylised neon. Decadent minimalism. Quality to detail. Lush textures. Red lights and mirrors. A relaxing atmosphere with wifi. There's a content partnership with AppleTV+ so you get exclusives, simultaneous releases and even opportunities to watch the pilot episode of a new small-screen series right here on the big one. The staff are professional, laid back and expedient. They have the sophistry to serve you when you require serving or leave you be if you want that. Jack stands out for his other-level Customer Service delivery which ALWAYS belies a genuine commitment to making your experience the very best. And I've worked in New York, New York so I know what first rate CS looks and feels like. There's a smart park with benches out back (there are two entrance/exits). St John's square is like Soho Square in the West End, London innterms of size and feel. I often sit there watching the footy on my phone or reading if I arrive early. It's peaceful and smart at this end of town. The Everyman smartphone app is the clincher. Book your seat, save to apple wallet, add to calendar for a reminder and often, as you leave the venue, it connects through to Apple Music and plays you the theme tune to what you just watched as you leave the building right into your airpods. Not bad! Check it out but don't tell everyone.

A very large cinema in Manchester city centre, this cinema was previously operated by ODEON, until…read morethey were forced to sell the cinema to rivals, VUE, who now operate the cinema. This location is HUGE - 23 screens, 4,723 seats, and one of the largest IMAX screens in Europe, The cinema is over multiple floors, and the layout can be a little confusing, the staff seem friendly enough and on guard to help. If you require lift access, you will require a staff member to help you with this as they are NOT customer operated. Escalators are available without the help of a staff member. There are lots of screens to pick up and purchase tickets, and there is normally at least one person on the manned desks if you want to use as little technology as possible to get your tickets. There are often cheaper screenings, costing around £4.99 per person, so it is reasonable and affordable, combined with the many offers available from many third-party companies including banks and insurance companies, who offer discounted cinema tickets. Snacks are expensive, but what cinema doesn't charge an arm and a leg for the slightest bite to eat? Not much has changed since the ODEON days, the main difference is the branding around the cinema, some parts could do with a refurb but still a nice, large cinema in a great central city location. 4*

I've been neglecting Yelp... adulting is tough stuff. So we went to a movie ;) The cinema is…read morewithin a convenient walking distance for us, so we can usually make a spur-of-the-moment decision on whether or not to see a movie. The problem is that we haven't seen many movies of late that we were interested in seeing at the cinema. Maybe we are getting old or maybe the movies aren't really that great, so we have not been in awhile. We kept seeing commercials for 'Jurassic World' and of course everyone is posting on FB about it, so we decided it would make for a good Sunday afternoon activity. This Cineworld is huge with three floors, including an IMAX and 3D screens. They always seem to have a nice variety of options for children, as well as concerts and Bollywood films. We have had some problems trying to collect our tickets from the machines, but on this occasion the machines did work. Once you get through, there is the usual Pick-n-Mix stand, and of course popcorn and other sweets. However, they do have a Baskin Robbins counter with a nice selection of ice cream. On this occasion we stuck to popcorn, but I can say that the Brownie Sundae is wonderful! They do have combos, for example a medium drink and medium popcorn for £6.50. I know everyone has a whinge about prices at cinemas, but let's be honest, concessions is where they make their money, besides, I've never had my purse searched before... a candy bar from ASDA has made it in once or twice. Anyway, on the next floor up, there is a bar, although I don't know that I have ever seen it open. With as large as the place is, navigating it isn't too bad, but I'm not sure that there are other concession counters, so during peak hours, you may find yourself spending the previews in a queue. We have seen movies in 2D, 3D, and in the IMAX and all of the facilities are well maintained, it is clean (no sticky floors), and the seats are quite comfortable. I know on occasion, when Mr. Snarky has used the app to book tickets, sometimes the seating plan doesn't quite match what is actually there, so just be aware of that. If you are seeing a movie in 3D, you have the option to bring your own 3D glasses with you or purchase them on-site. Just make sure you have the right kind of 3D glasses because, apparently, not all 3D glasses are made the same?! We had purchased some the first time we went and we just use those whenever we go now. The other bonus is that there are multiple restaurants within walking distance of the cinema, so you can easily make a day/night of it. Parking is free and there is a lot of it! However, watch out if you are parking on the edges of the car park as people who frequent the McDonald's up the road like to dump their rubbish at the edges of the car park. If you are using public transport, buses do stop across the street from the cinema, but only at night, weekends, and bank holidays. And if you are walking, Waters Meeting Road has recently been resurfaced and some of the pavements have been redone and bushes cleared away so you can actually walk on the pavement. There is also a path from Crompton Way just on the left side of the gym next to the cinema, which also makes for a 20-minute walk from the train station. So quite easy access regardless of how you are making your way there. Overall, it is a great facility that has really been well maintained.
