Ogallala or North Platte are my usual places for an overnight stop between Omaha and Denver. Until recently, the building belonged to Holiday Inn Express. The franchise owners retired, and IHG decided to build a somewhat larger, but soul-less and far more expensive, building across the highway. After a spell under independent ownership, Wynham took over.The new owners are managing the place very well, and they've brought back some of the perks that Holiday Inn had phased out: an expansive breakfast buffet, dog-friendly accommodations, and friendly Western hospitality. Breakfast: Under the steel fist of AmericInn, the famous biscuits with real sausage gravy and pastries from the local bakery had to go. They still have waffles, bagels, cereal, eggs, sausage, oatmeal, toast, a coffee bar, a juice machine, mini muffins, and probably some other goodies I've forgotten. Don't miss it. Rooms: Modern, comfortable, and well maintained. The bathroom has a nice massage shower head (thanks to the Holiday Inn heritage) which is mounted very high (wonderful for tall folks). Lighting: Plenty of lamps, but the bulbs are on the dim side. The bathroom is well lit (which is very unusual for hotels around here, for some reason). Pets: Pet friendly rooms, plus some standalone hunting cabins for those travelling with a "pack." There are good places to "walk" your dog. Do be aware that there is no swimming (human or canine) allowed in the nice pond out back. Also be aware that if you walk your dog around the pond, there might be patches of poison ivy, so stay alert. Accessibility: The building is super-accessible for those in wheelchairs. There's an elevator, and the main doors are automatic sliding doors. Tech: Extra outlets over the desk, but only one by the bed. DirecTV with HBO. Fast WiFi. Business center available. Tesla charging stations in the back parking lot. Downsides: On a recent visit, housekeeping knocked to enter my room TWICE before I checked out in the morning. They should really keep a list and visit only the rooms that have been vacated. The AmericInn Bamboo Line products (shampoo, soap, etc) look "green" but no ingredient list is available anywhere, even from the manufacturer; I have personally heard reports of people having very bad skin reactions to some of these products. Extras: There's no on-site fitness facility, but they can provide passes to the local rec center. You can get a coupon for the very good mexican restaurant next door.

The lounge and dining areas are open to foster the reason you are at the Lake to begin with which is get away from the stuffy confines of your everyday life. Second, it is no longer called Kingsley Lodge but Kingsley Dam Resort on their website. You can also find the same exact cabins on Airbnb. It's cheaper to book through their direct website. Don't try to copy and paste the address from their website into Apple Maps. For some reason, it reroutes you a different way. We solved this by just dropping a pin at 1510 N-61, Ogallala, NE. (Check in at the gas station) I highly recommend that the owners of the lodge update this page so that customers aren't confused like we were! Third, yes the cabins are directly across from the water. However, I would not consider it accessible for most people. My husband, toddler, and I were able to climb down the trail by taking turns in passing off our child in between the rocks. I would say most moderately fit individuals can deal with the steep climb. I don't recommend taking a small child unless you are very confident that they can handle it. With that being said, WOW it was well worth the hard work to arrive to our own private beach. It was hard to believe that we were in Nebraska and not Southern California! The cabins ARE clean, but pretty dated. By the time we paid the nightly rate, pet fee, and other fees, it came to $200 for the night. I did feel that it was worth it but I really wish that we got more bang for our buck. It is called a resort but I don't believe there are any real amenities like a pool or anything. I think there is a lot of room for progress in this area. For dinner, we went to Driftwood in downtown ogallala. (About 12 minutes away). The burgers were very good and supplied by a local beef ranch. I recommend eating there for a nice dinner. Overall, 4/5 stars. I'd say this would be an excellent spot for people that love adventure. Also, we were scheduled to arrive very early in the morning (2-3 in the morning) and accommodations were arranged so we could access our room. The room was clean, comfortable and pet friendly. They even put us on the end closest to the grass pad so we could take our dogs out easily. We look forward to returning whenever we winds take us back to Oshkosh.
