My family and I had such high expectations. This weekend was a wholesome family trip for my 42 second birthday with my older children, elderly mother, husband, and little twins. I booked online without any hassle, but was unable to rent two tent sites on the same booking, I had to go through the process twice. I wrote a message in one of the bookings and asked to add an additional tent to the booking (this was for an awning to keep my little ones protected from the sun as we sat and relaxed at the site). I received an email the next day saying that I owed an additional 10.63 for the additional rent, and could pay it upon arrival. This all seemed above board and straight forward. My daughter arrived with my mother and her sister before us. I had placed her license plate number in their online system, I sent her all of their barcodes to get in; I thought I had prepared her for an easy beginning to our weekend. When she asked if she could drive in, Ed said it was full and that she would have to park in the overflow outside of the campsite. She then asked if she could drive in to drop off the equipment, he responded, "no, you will not come out again, I know your type". My daughter felt too scared to tell him that her grandmother was sitting in the car and had bad hips. My mother sat in the car for an hour waiting for hour arrival because of this. My daughter then asked if there were any carts to help carry the items, Ed pointed and said, "yes, over there". A further 20 mins were spent looking for the carts. She called me to explain what was happening, I advised her to go back to him and explain that she couldn't find them, she was very worried about the abuse she was walking into. Luckily when she arrived the younger shorter night guard took pity and walked back with her. They found the carts hidden behind the dumpster, none of them were where Ed had said. Ed had said that he did not have yellow tags for the car, but that they were verified (this will come back into play later in the story). My husband and I arrived with the little kids and we found our daughters trying to get all of the camping gear from the front of the site to our spots in the dark. We spoke to Ed to make sure he was aware we were the parents and responsible party. We built our tents and put up our awning, the time was about 11pm. My son had now arrived at the train station, so I put my babies to bed, left my husband with them, and the rest of us left to pick him up. At about midnight I received a text from my husband stating that Ed had shown up at the spot and demanded the awning be taken down. He called it a "party tent" and said they are strictly forbidden. My husband said he would not take it down, but would sort it out the next day. This is exactly what happened, when we woke, my husband went to the front desk and paid an additional 87 euro for random fees and iron over the awning. He was told everything was good, and no more problems would occur. We walked out to our cars to find stickers on them stating that we needed cards on them. We went back inside and explained that Ed had said he didn't have any left. They then told us we had paid for motorcycles and needed more money; we paid with a smile. We went off for a day of fun discovering Amsterdam. We all returned much later that evening. My husband arrived about 20 mins before the rest of us. When he arrived he went to the site to find the awning torn down and our belongings scattered. My daughters and son walked through the gate and Ed shouted at them "sweet dreams", and then he and his friends (the man that is always standing at the gate late at night chatting) laughed. When I walked past with my mother a few Mins later I heard him say to his friend, "she is with the man", I had no idea it was aimed at me, but when this was all put together a few mins later, it all made so much more sense. As I headed to the site, my husband was walking towards me, he said he was going to talk with security; I was still in the dark at this time. When I saw the tent I realised what was happening. My kids were trying to gather our belongings and fix the site, and also put the babies to bed as it was very late. I went to find my husband and talk to security also. We all spoke, but nothing came of it. His friend spoke for him at first, and then he spoke. I explained that his aggression got in the way of

It has something for everyone (small beach, good for…read morerunning, cycling etc), and there are sport fields (mainly field hockey) I am a new resident to IJburg, and not familiar with the history of the park, until I looked into that for this review. This used to be a landfill, even for chemical waste. Mid 1990's the area was completely remediated and isolated. The area is under constant active control to make sure that everything stays clean. The impact of all of this is clearly visible in the terrain: there are no large trees (the roots would penetrate the isolation layer), and there are concrete wells clearly visible throughout the park. Anyways, back to my review. You can run, skeeler and cycle here perfectly. The quality of the roads is good, and since there is no traffic, you can do your thing in peace. There are a couple of grass fields where you can play some sports, or even do Yoga if the weather is good. So why am I giving just 3 stars? The park is big enough to also allow for a dog park, however, dogs are only allowed off lead on a few small grass strips at the edges of the park. MIssed opportunity for all the dog owners on IJburg :(. Also, this island is owned by rabbits. It must not be nice to play any kind of sports on the grass fields, that are covered in rabbit holes. Unless you want to break your ankles of course. Lastly: I understand why there is no light on the park, however, it would give a safer feeling at night (when cycling or running there), to at least be able to see where you are going.

It's a unique location with beautiful cycling routes towards the sea. What is so awesome is that it takes you just a few minutes to cycle so quickly outside of the city. Ijburg has become one of Amsterdam's upcoming districts to live and enjoy time outside of the city. This area has several islands all connected by bridges. This new man-made Island east of Amsterdam is a wonderful place to go if you would like to take a break from the city. Also make sure to stop by Vrijburcht Café for lunch and a beautiful overview of the sea. It is reachable by bike or tram of Central Station. There are also 3 small beaches to soak up the sun in this region Blijburg, Strand West, and Amsterdam Plage. There is also a camping spot called Zeeburg for local and adventurous international travelers.

I looked for a place where I could relax and write peacefully in my journal about the things I had seen over the day. As a student at the time, I also wanted to stay somewhere reasonably priced. Expecting something similar to the parks on the outskirts of major U.S. cities, I thought I was gambling with my safety by booking a bed in a cabin in the Amsterdamse Bos. However, staying here contributed to one of my favorite experiences in Europe. The grounds were safe and secure, and the cabin was, even from a no-nonsense guy's perspective, kind of adorable: the nights I stayed there, I felt like I was in a fairytale or something. Since it was May, I was warm enough, even at night thanks to the freshly laundered linens and blanket they provided. That said, it's a campground and the cabins are cabins. The toilets, showers, and sinks are in a communal facility with concrete floors (they are nice and clean though), but...just because I had a wonderful experience here doesn't mean it's right for everyone. This is absolutely not a party place, and I want to stress again that it's not a hostel. There are tons of families from all over Europe camping here (for Americans: this is apparently pretty common: Europeans sometimes take months off from work and travel with their families, camping in mini Winnebago-like vehicles). People are out grilling dinner, reading books in hammocks while kids play etc... If you're an American and normally stay in chain hotels or nicer hostels at the center of the action when you travel abroad, you probably will not appreciate how well the Amsterdamse Bos does their thing, so stay away -- it's just not for you. If you're used to rugged conditions, enjoy the outdoors, can sleep anywhere, and have a romantic side, then you'll find this campground surprisingly awesome -- much better than other options, including most youth hostels, in Europe. As for me: if I ever get back to Amsterdam in the summer months, I'll be staying here again!

Customer service is not their strong point at Gaasper Camping, in fact I'm not sure the words even…read moreenter their vocabulary. I'm normally quite forgiving with people, but the lady who runs this place is nothing short of psychotic. Which in truth, is a sincere shame, because it would have been a very lovely place to camp otherwise. The location is very handy, it's a 5 minute walk from Gaasperplas Metro station, with a direct route into Amsterdam Centraal which takes about 20 minutes. The Metro runs until quite late at night, and a night bus runs a replacement service after that (the 355 or the 357 I believe) which takes slightly longer at 45 minutes to an hour, but it does drop you right at the entrance to the campsite, and your Metro tickets are valid for its service. The campsite has a large field for tents and a separate area for caravans. It's quite a pretty location, with a few trees dotted about. I like trees. There is a functional toilet block which is kept clean, though remember to bring your own toilet roll! Unfortunately you have to pay for the showers though, which I think is ridiculously cheeky considering you've already paid to stay their. A 10 minute shower will cost you 80c - and I soon found out that 10 minutes isn't enough to shampoo, condition, wash and shave all in one go, so I recommend buying two tokens if you want to make the most of your shower. The same block also has some washing machines and (I think) tumble dryers, should you have cleaner camping habits than me and need to do some washing. The more people you can cram into a tent, the cheaper it is, because it's €5 per tent per night, plus an additional €5 per person per night. On the day of your departure you must leave by 12pm pronto or you will be charged extra (even if it's only by 15 minutes). There is a small supermarket on site where you can pick up some basics, but God forbid you should walk in eating an apple, or you will be asked to leave toute suite! The reason it gets 2 stars is because I have never experienced such horrendous customer service in my life. The woman is fiercely determined not to be screwed over by a single cent, which is fair enough, I guess business people have to be strict to be successful, but not to the extent where they are irrationally rude to their customers... Our first problem arose after we had camped for one night and a couple more friends came to join us. They weren't even going to be allowed onto the campsite without paying, which was a bit silly because we hadn't even sorted out who was sharing whose tent yet. In the end they had to surrender their passports to be allowed to come and see us. We decide to put up an extra tent, and off we go to pay for it. Here, the lady tries to charge me again for the previous night, for which we have already paid. I try to explain that I already paid my €10 for the two nights, but she's having none of it. Not only will she not listen to me, but she won't even let me complete my sentence, I'm telling you, there's no reasoning with this woman! She kept saying "I have added the numbers, I have done the work, I am right." But when I asked to see her 'work' and 'numbers' she would not, she just expected us to take her word for it. She would talk over me every time I opened my mouth to speak, so in the end I just gave up, it was only €10 but it was the principal that angered me. I was fuming, I tell thee, positively fuming. So if you can deal with the aggro, then come here, because it would be rather lovely. If not, stay well away.

We loved this place! The staff were all great, no cause for alarm. In total I spent 5 nights at Gaasper and nobody I met wasn't prepared to go out of their way to assist. I even turned up well past closing time and no hassle at all to get a spot. There's great Metro links into town; the onsite supermarket and eaterie were extremely acceptable; on site bike hire; excellent facilities, including a laundry; and very reasonable overnight rates on top of very well maintained grounds all made this camp site my number 1 in a 2 month European trip.
