That day was today and while at the beginning of the week the weather did not look super promising yet, after arriving at Winkeloord the weather was just super! We had plenty of sun and also quite a nice breeze for sailing! The place itself turned out a little bit tricky to find for me: it is super helpful that on their website they already are aware that their address is not working correctly in most satnav systems and therefore they provide already the alternatives that should work on most systems. From the A2 highway, you take a very small narrow road and finally make sure that you go straight after the little bridge (I read a sign for the Jachthaven and turned right, which made us end up in the wrong location at first). When renting a Valk sailing boat, you get a small water-tight container for your valuables and everything else that could be needed on the water. The only thing you will have to take care of yourself is having some drinks and some food to enjoy :) Boats appeared to be in very good condition and I think the price (70 euros for the whole day) is very reasonable. Note that you will not get an outboard engine with this. They have a limited amount of these and if you do want to have one, you will have to rent it separately (and be on time with your reservation) The sailing itself was just a blast: Great weather and getting some sailing lessons from Flippie herself :)

My family and I had such high expectations. This weekend was a wholesome family trip for my 42 second birthday with my older children, elderly mother, husband, and little twins. I booked online without any hassle, but was unable to rent two tent sites on the same booking, I had to go through the process twice. I wrote a message in one of the bookings and asked to add an additional tent to the booking (this was for an awning to keep my little ones protected from the sun as we sat and relaxed at the site). I received an email the next day saying that I owed an additional 10.63 for the additional rent, and could pay it upon arrival. This all seemed above board and straight forward. My daughter arrived with my mother and her sister before us. I had placed her license plate number in their online system, I sent her all of their barcodes to get in; I thought I had prepared her for an easy beginning to our weekend. When she asked if she could drive in, Ed said it was full and that she would have to park in the overflow outside of the campsite. She then asked if she could drive in to drop off the equipment, he responded, "no, you will not come out again, I know your type". My daughter felt too scared to tell him that her grandmother was sitting in the car and had bad hips. My mother sat in the car for an hour waiting for hour arrival because of this. My daughter then asked if there were any carts to help carry the items, Ed pointed and said, "yes, over there". A further 20 mins were spent looking for the carts. She called me to explain what was happening, I advised her to go back to him and explain that she couldn't find them, she was very worried about the abuse she was walking into. Luckily when she arrived the younger shorter night guard took pity and walked back with her. They found the carts hidden behind the dumpster, none of them were where Ed had said. Ed had said that he did not have yellow tags for the car, but that they were verified (this will come back into play later in the story). My husband and I arrived with the little kids and we found our daughters trying to get all of the camping gear from the front of the site to our spots in the dark. We spoke to Ed to make sure he was aware we were the parents and responsible party. We built our tents and put up our awning, the time was about 11pm. My son had now arrived at the train station, so I put my babies to bed, left my husband with them, and the rest of us left to pick him up. At about midnight I received a text from my husband stating that Ed had shown up at the spot and demanded the awning be taken down. He called it a "party tent" and said they are strictly forbidden. My husband said he would not take it down, but would sort it out the next day. This is exactly what happened, when we woke, my husband went to the front desk and paid an additional 87 euro for random fees and iron over the awning. He was told everything was good, and no more problems would occur. We walked out to our cars to find stickers on them stating that we needed cards on them. We went back inside and explained that Ed had said he didn't have any left. They then told us we had paid for motorcycles and needed more money; we paid with a smile. We went off for a day of fun discovering Amsterdam. We all returned much later that evening. My husband arrived about 20 mins before the rest of us. When he arrived he went to the site to find the awning torn down and our belongings scattered. My daughters and son walked through the gate and Ed shouted at them "sweet dreams", and then he and his friends (the man that is always standing at the gate late at night chatting) laughed. When I walked past with my mother a few Mins later I heard him say to his friend, "she is with the man", I had no idea it was aimed at me, but when this was all put together a few mins later, it all made so much more sense. As I headed to the site, my husband was walking towards me, he said he was going to talk with security; I was still in the dark at this time. When I saw the tent I realised what was happening. My kids were trying to gather our belongings and fix the site, and also put the babies to bed as it was very late. I went to find my husband and talk to security also. We all spoke, but nothing came of it. His friend spoke for him at first, and then he spoke. I explained that his aggression got in the way of

I'm not a drinker, not a smoker, and not a partier in general…read more So when I headed to Amsterdam in May 2008 for a few days to see the canals and go the Anne Frank House and Rijksmuseum, I was looking for a different kind of lodging than a downtown hostel sure to be crammed with drunk and/or high Americans partying till late. I looked for a place where I could relax and write peacefully in my journal about the things I had seen over the day. As a student at the time, I also wanted to stay somewhere reasonably priced. Expecting something similar to the parks on the outskirts of major U.S. cities, I thought I was gambling with my safety by booking a bed in a cabin in the Amsterdamse Bos. However, staying here contributed to one of my favorite experiences in Europe. The grounds were safe and secure, and the cabin was, even from a no-nonsense guy's perspective, kind of adorable: the nights I stayed there, I felt like I was in a fairytale or something. Since it was May, I was warm enough, even at night thanks to the freshly laundered linens and blanket they provided. That said, it's a campground and the cabins are cabins. The toilets, showers, and sinks are in a communal facility with concrete floors (they are nice and clean though), but...just because I had a wonderful experience here doesn't mean it's right for everyone. This is absolutely not a party place, and I want to stress again that it's not a hostel. There are tons of families from all over Europe camping here (for Americans: this is apparently pretty common: Europeans sometimes take months off from work and travel with their families, camping in mini Winnebago-like vehicles). People are out grilling dinner, reading books in hammocks while kids play etc... If you're an American and normally stay in chain hotels or nicer hostels at the center of the action when you travel abroad, you probably will not appreciate how well the Amsterdamse Bos does their thing, so stay away -- it's just not for you. If you're used to rugged conditions, enjoy the outdoors, can sleep anywhere, and have a romantic side, then you'll find this campground surprisingly awesome -- much better than other options, including most youth hostels, in Europe. As for me: if I ever get back to Amsterdam in the summer months, I'll be staying here again!
