Customer service is not their strong point at Gaasper Camping, in fact I'm not sure the words even enter their vocabulary. I'm normally quite forgiving with people, but the lady who runs this place is nothing short of psychotic. Which in truth, is a sincere shame, because it would have been a very lovely place to camp otherwise.
The location is very handy, it's a 5 minute walk from Gaasperplas Metro station, with a direct route into Amsterdam Centraal which takes about 20 minutes. The Metro runs until quite late at night, and a night bus runs a replacement service after that (the 355 or the 357 I believe) which takes slightly longer at 45 minutes to an hour, but it does drop you right at the entrance to the campsite, and your Metro tickets are valid for its service.
The campsite has a large field for tents and a separate area for caravans. It's quite a pretty location, with a few trees dotted about. I like trees. There is a functional toilet block which is kept clean, though remember to bring your own toilet roll! Unfortunately you have to pay for the showers though, which I think is ridiculously cheeky considering you've already paid to stay their. A 10 minute shower will cost you 80c - and I soon found out that 10 minutes isn't enough to shampoo, condition, wash and shave all in one go, so I recommend buying two tokens if you want to make the most of your shower. The same block also has some washing machines and (I think) tumble dryers, should you have cleaner camping habits than me and need to do some washing.
The more people you can cram into a tent, the cheaper it is, because it's €5 per tent per night, plus an additional €5 per person per night. On the day of your departure you must leave by 12pm pronto or you will be charged extra (even if it's only by 15 minutes). There is a small supermarket on site where you can pick up some basics, but God forbid you should walk in eating an apple, or you will be asked to leave toute suite!
The reason it gets 2 stars is because I have never experienced such horrendous customer service in my life. The woman is fiercely determined not to be screwed over by a single cent, which is fair enough, I guess business people have to be strict to be successful, but not to the extent where they are irrationally rude to their customers...
Our first problem arose after we had camped for one night and a couple more friends came to join us. They weren't even going to be allowed onto the campsite without paying, which was a bit silly because we hadn't even sorted out who was sharing whose tent yet. In the end they had to surrender their passports to be allowed to come and see us.
We decide to put up an extra tent, and off we go to pay for it. Here, the lady tries to charge me again for the previous night, for which we have already paid. I try to explain that I already paid my €10 for the two nights, but she's having none of it. Not only will she not listen to me, but she won't even let me complete my sentence, I'm telling you, there's no reasoning with this woman! She kept saying "I have added the numbers, I have done the work, I am right." But when I asked to see her 'work' and 'numbers' she would not, she just expected us to take her word for it. She would talk over me every time I opened my mouth to speak, so in the end I just gave up, it was only €10 but it was the principal that angered me. I was fuming, I tell thee, positively fuming.
So if you can deal with the aggro, then come here, because it would be rather lovely. If not, stay well away. read more
