There are some bakeries where you question the tastiness of the goods. They either look bland, like they've been sitting out too long or like they're made with low quality ingredients. There are others, like Vlaamsch Broodhuys, where this is no question in your mind that everything you try will be a piece of heaven.
Our first taste of heaven was of an Apricot Tart. Sweet and tangy with a thin yet sturdy buttery crust. We then sampled the Currant loaf, which was dense and chock full of currants. It was delicious and not too sweet, so I think they used unsweetened currants. We ended up getting a loaf of sourdough with salted almonds and Fiji ginger instead, since we couldn't finish 2 loaves and the latter sounded more unique (I still cried a little inside for my beloved Currant bread). I never would have guessed that almonds and ginger went so well together and I love learning about new flavor combinations. I highly recommend any of these 3 items and I fully plan on going back once more before I leave.
The lady who helped us is now my favorite person ever. Yes, an overstatement, but she was as patient as a nun while we took ages to decide what to get. She gave us delicious samples of the bread and when we realized they didn't accept cash for payment (due to past robberies in the area), she even offered to use her credit card so that we could still "pay" and not go home empty-handed. I don't know her name but she's tall and blonde (yeah I know, not helpful in Amsterdam). Besttt eeeeeverrrr. read more
