Went back for a second visit mainly because the queso fundido and guacamole are that good. Even though the waiter had a "F*** Trump" hat on, we didn't act like liberals about it -- we stuck it out and kept it about the experience. Not at all authentic, very much for tourist with almost no flavor. When asked for salsa, they gave us sweet mustard and when asked for spicy they gave us mayo with some Tabasco init. The food was pretty good but the service was really, really bad. Several things we ordered and reminded our server about just never came. Some of the drinks we ordered we ended up going to get from the bar ourselves. Some of the dishes we ordered didn't come until everyone else had finished eating. My son and brother ordered the skirt steak (arrachhera) the portion was huge and each they thought they might not finish it, but they did because it was grilled and flavored to perfection! For a smaller portion you can order the arrachera on skewers or tacos, which we will do next time. My son is a tortilla critic and is always in search for the best tortilla... he found it here at Zapatas! Hand made blue corn tortillas made to order, soft, smooth and full of flavor! Visited this restaurant while visiting Isla Holbox during my birthday week in October. The restaurant is a cute little outdoor/indoor space nestled on the corner of the Main Street of Isla. I loved the "jungle" feel that the restaurant gave which included with swings as seat at the bar and lots of greenery around and overhead. The murals on the walls were colorful and unique. AND what's even more fantastic is that the Wi-Fi here is great! So a nice place to stop to cool off with a drink and surf the web outside of your hotel. The staff was amazing and so was the staff! The chips and salsa were fresh and delicious. The quest was actually real cheese not that's artificial stuff. The whole grilled fish was divine! The food was good, but the service was not so much. Our server forgot one of the plates, and never asked to refill our drinks. We had to ask for our bill three times. This spot was our first night here. Beautiful garden patio near the grill to watch our food being prepped and coming to our faces. Please note that if you are searching multiple sites for reviews they have recently changed their menu. Very little traditional Mexican food (steak, chicken, pork) mostly shrimp and fish. The tostadas are very traditional old school very Mexican. Multiple sauce all with great fresh flavors. The Classic Margarita is great, if you want traditional ask for no sugar (real margaritas only have lime tequila and and orange flavor liquor). Good selection of local beers and wines. Big negative is the fajita dishes are 90% vegetables and not worth you money. The Shrimp dish by itself comes in Butter, Garlic or Chipotle and you get 9 good shrimp compared to a few tiny shrimp of the fajita dish (see pictures). Lots of pasta(strange) read more

Viva Zapata definitely has the potential for greatness, but I'll go with a solid four stars for my recent experience. We easily made a reservation online the day of, though it was a weeknight and a pretty slow time. When we arrived, Covid precautions were being taken and tables were appropriately spaced. We ordered some margaritas and started with guacamole and queso fundido with chorizo. Both were fantastic but the starters arrived before the drinks; this was unfortunately a theme. Our entrees arrived as we were finishing up our starters. I really hate being rushed through a meal! That said, I thought the food was really great. My husband had a fish of the day with spicy chipotle sauce while I went with one of the house specials, camarones zapata - shrimp in a creamy sauce with white wine and a touch of heat. I can honestly say this was one of my favorite meals of the trip. There was live music and the musician was great, though diners should be prepared for tips to be solicited while dining. On a final note, I used the restrooms before we left and was less than impressed with their cleanliness. I'm actually glad we were seated near the open kitchen because I saw with my own eyes that they keep that area spotless. Management, please check on your restrooms more often! read more

What fun!! We just finished a morning at playa coco and we're ready to eat! And getting refreshing drinks. Viva Zapata did not disappoint and best of all they accepted visa. We got the watermelon mojito ( mojito de sandía ). It was refreshing for a hot day as well as amazing alcohol and taste. My husband got the Mexican mula ( like Moscow mule but I think Mexican has tequila or mezcal). It was the best drink I had on the island!! So smooth so refreshing so darn good!! We ordered the guacamole, it was good by normal standards but once your in Mexico the bar goes up lol so not the best but very good. The lobster ceviche was excellent. Highly recommend. We got the small portion. And we shared the garlic shrimp (camarón al ajo). It was good especially the rice!! I really wanted to have the grilled lobster but they only serve that for dinner. The place decor is very appealing and the ambiance pretty pleasing but the flies were all over our food and I can say, we went to plenty of places some cheaper even, and they didn't had the same problem. The service was very slow and the staff was distracted having conversations between them and forgetting us customers. The food was great. We had the grilled seafood for two: one lobster tail already cut for convenience, octopus, plenty of shrimp, two big stone crab legs, a pretty big fish opened in half, a few clams and a small plate of ceviche. Pretty average food, although maybe we ordered the wrong things. Not too cheap either. Staff nice and friendly, and they have WiFi.

We were walking around the island, saw this place and decided to stop by for some drinks. They took our temperature and wrote down our names, and gave us hand sanitizer before seating us, they also handed us a small paper bag with their logo on it to put our masks in. We decided to sit at the bar on their swings. We ordered beer, looked at their menu and ordered food too. Everything we had was delicious and the bartender was really nice. This place was so good, that we ended up here twice on our visit to Holbox (also, locals told us it was the best place in town during the October season). The first night, there was a group of 9 of us. However, 5 went off shopping while only 4 of us sat. Restaurant was great about letting us hold our table. The second night, there were 4 of us. Both times we were seated immediately. Drinks: We started with the Sangrias. It was so refreshing that many in our group opted for the same thing. The next night, I stuck with Margaritas which were standard. Food: Queso Fundido (we added bacon): Inhaled. BUT, who doesn't love melted cheese. Nachos w/Steak: Inhaled. I highly recommend the catch of the day. Many fisherman on the island, so grab what's fresh. When I went to place my order for an entree, server brought out 2 huge fresh lobsters and asked if I wanted one of them. I grabbed the 1 pounder, had them grill it and it was Delicious. Date totally regretted not having it after he took a bite. (He ordered steak tacos and didn't like them). Thus, ORDER the FRESH CATCH of the day. Viva Zapata Pasta w/Lobster. I passed this place multiple times on my visit without going in, because it looked mainly like a bar from the street. But my first impressions were wrong. On the night we finally decided to head in and try this spot, we were immediately glad we did. It turns out Viva Zapata is a well priced, simple spot offering some of the freshest seafood in all of Holbox. It was the only dinner we ate in town that included both tourists and locals in the dining room. We had a good meal with excellent seafood. Highlights included the shrimp fajitas with homemade tortillas, the mixed seafood plate, solid fish tacos and some of the best ceviche we had all week. Kid-friendly (there is a little kids games area) outdoor seating, some thoughtful free starters (chips, good salsa and some spicy vegetables to dip chips into) and good seafood. They have cocktails, and beer and wine. The cocktails were a-okay --I ordered a margarita with good tequila, it was really too sweet. In all though, a very solid little spot. read more

First time at this place and it was a great experience! Loved the watermelon juice and the seafood platter is a must. The seafood was fresh and very flavorful. You have to try the ceviche! The price for the seafood platter was a little on the higher side but it didn't bother me too much since the quality of food was great.
