I'm going to be honest--TikTok is the reason we drove about 25 minutes from home to try this place…read more We kept hearing about the huevos rancheros and how they've supposedly been making the same ranchero recipe since the 1980s. That kind of history will definitely get my attention.
Unfortunately, the ranchero sauce was a big miss for me. I was expecting something rich, flavorful, and distinctly ranchero. Instead, it tasted like someone mixed Pace Picante with a homemade salsa. Maybe that's the original recipe, but if it is, I'm going to respectfully pass. I just wasn't a fan.
Now, before I completely destroy the place, there were some definite wins.
Those potatoes were GOOD. Properly seasoned potatoes are becoming a rare discovery at breakfast restaurants, and these actually had flavor. The beans were also good.
The eggs? Chef, you understood the assignment. They came out perfectly over-medium. Not hard, not runny, not accidentally scrambled into oblivion. Just right. My hat is tilted to the chef for that one.
The homemade tortillas were another highlight, and the barbacoa was really good as well. So there were definitely some things happening on that plate that I enjoyed.
I also ordered oatmeal, which came with toast. I had to ask for jelly, and our server immediately offered peanut butter as another option. And honestly, our server was the MVP of the entire visit.
OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE!
Seriously. Friendly, attentive, helpful, and genuinely engaged with us throughout the meal. You know that feeling when someone is actually paying attention instead of just walking around collecting checks? That was our server. If management is reading this, recognize this employee and give them the credit they deserve. Great customer service can save an average meal from becoming a terrible experience, and our server absolutely did that.
My wife ordered the huevos rancheros with carne guisada, along with a barbacoa taco. She also added a small bowl of pozole. Unfortunately, the pozole was another hard pass for both of us--we just weren't fans of it.
Unfortunately... the pozole was another hard pass for us. Neither of us cared for it.
So here's my honest takeaway:
Good:
Well-seasoned potatoes
Good beans
Perfectly cooked over-medium eggs
Homemade tortillas
Good barbacoa
Outstanding customer service
Not so good:
Ranchero sauce wasn't what I expected
Pozole wasn't enjoyable
TikTok hype set the expectations way higher than the actual food delivered
Was the meal terrible? No. There were several things I really enjoyed.
Was it worth a 25-minute drive specifically because TikTok told me I needed to try it? For me, no.
I'm glad we tried it, and I'm especially glad we experienced the excellent service. But I don't see myself making that 25-minute drive again anytime soon just for this restaurant.
TikTok gets the credit for getting us through the door. Our server gets the credit for making sure we left happy. The food... well, the food is going to have to work a little harder to earn a second visit.
