I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. It's a man-made attraction designed for cruise ship tourism in…read morethe town of Hoonah. It was built by the Huna Totem Corporation to benefit the Tlinget community (which is great). It was built on the site that was once the Hoonah Cannery which was bought by the Icy Strait Salmon Company. It operated as a salmon cannery & fishery, even after the city burned to the ground in 1944. You'll learn about it as you take the complimentary green gondola cars to the cannery that houses a museum, gift shop, and restaurant. You can also take the trail to the cannery. With that said, Icy Strait Point was our least favorite port of call. They offer many wildlife tours, a very high zipline for adventure seekers, and trails that can be accessed via the SkyGlider. We were driven to the Spasski River Valley to take a trail with a total of 3 observation platforms. We saw a Sitka black-tailed deer, and some actual bear scat (and not to be confused with the boozy shot I had in Ketchikan). I'm just putting that one out there for my fellow Yelpers who don't believe that the bears are really there. Yes, be careful not to step in it on the trail. That silly bear. We also heard a red squirrel barking at us from a tree. We learned about the vegetation such as skunk cabbage and spruce tip. The spruce tip actually tasted pretty good. We saw a bald eagle's nest on the way back into town. So, what didn't I like? It's just not as organized as other ports in Alaska. The facilities weren't as good. You're dropped off at the cannery to shop & eat instead of back to the Departure Den. I should have known they wouldn't take us back there just by the name of the building. We had to take the gondola back to the ship. I get it. It's a way to support the local economy. My husband was desperate to get back to the ship. He saw a whale off of our balcony before we left. What was cool is that I got to see one off in the distance later that afternoon. There were also sea lions frolicking around the ship. So, we did get back in time. Let's just say that I loved the nature aspect of it all. I could have done without the touristy part of it.

Goldbelt Tram - The tram makes a six-minute ascent up Mount Roberts from the lower terminal to a height of about 1,800 feet.

No ear popping, it can be a little crowded, but the cool thing is your ticket is good all day and you can run up and down until the end of the day. Military discount is small, but if you have a good size group, it's worth it. There are a couple of amenities at the top. A a small cafe, a gift shop, a little auditorium that plays a movie about the history of the tram. We got up to the top. And one ticket will allow you to do it early and then again later? Wow. The staff are friendly and keep things in order. They get you up pretty quickly. We had a good time, and I can see why it's a must do on Juneau lists. Recommend.

There's a $50 credit per tour that applies to the first guest through the "More at Sea" package. You'll also get Latitude Reward discounts depending on your tier. It somehow ended up costing less than $20 for both of us. It's also an all day pass, so you can go up & down as many times as you want. We were one of the first in line that morning. There were only 8 people in front of us. We watched as they were taking the staff up to the shop & resraurants. Before long, it was our turn. The tram was pretty packed with lots of standing room and very few seats. I chose to be on the outer edge with a great view. The climb is steep, and you do go straight up like an elevator for that last push to the top. To be honest, I've been on much higher gondolas (to the top of the Zugspitze near Garmisch). The Goldbelt Tram was an easy ride compared to that. I did like the commentary along the way. It was nice to hear fun facts & history as you're taking in the view of the channel and forest below. There is a gift shop, restaurant, bar, and theater as you get to the top. We opted to take on the Alpine Loop Trail early. We also made sure to stop at the Chilkat Theater to view the "Seeing Daylight" documentary. Don't miss that viewing. It's part of the whole experience. It really puts everything into perspective about the land and its people (Tlinget) who have lived here for centuries. You'll see an ongoing theme as you explore other Alaskan towns. It really ties it all together. We didn't get to try the restaurants. We thought it best to explore Downtown Juneau and the waterfront instead. It was a good decision. It was all very memorable! I'd love to do it all again.
