They hire people depending on their race/accent. Had an interview with them everything went well, and the they asked me about my accent and where am from. Before that the interviewer was telling me that i needed to do and i need to complete them by the end of week and when i told her about my accent and everything she later sent me an email saying that my application was not accepted. It's a discrimination and a highly unprofessional environment. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO WORK FOR THEM. I can't imagine how bad they treat their elderly clients. read more

Senior aging is a delicate process and usually evolves until their passing away. At 97 years of age suffering from a former stroke in 2019 our dearest family member has required special care for many years. If you're new to working with caregivers you'll quickly discover a few things: ONE - it's ridiculously expensive and will drain your bank accounts! And sadly mostly insurance DO NOT cover the hourly costs. Average rate 2024 in Oregon is $45 hour ($18-$25 goes to caregiver) and it constantly increases! In the beginning we only needed 4 hours, then 8, now we're at 14 hour 8AM-10PM, that's $20K a month just in caregiving!! TWO - the quality of caregivers and companies varies a lot and has a very limited and repetitive pool of caregivers. Sometimes you get great caregivers, sometimes you don't, doesn't matter what company or what level of care required. It's amazing how many caregiver seem to have ZERO people skills or training. We constantly put caregivers on the do not return list. There are 3 basic levels of caregiving most companies provide: (1) BASIC CARE - provides companionship, bathroom assistance, meals, light house keeping and monitoring. Usually greenhorns fresh out of high school or off the street it would seem. Sometimes we'd get caregivers with zero experience or training. (2) ADVANCED CARE - includes palliative care, ability to do bed or wheelchair transfers, more help with mobility issues, meals, help with meds, toileting, chores, higher level of attention to care and monitoring, advanced health tasks and help keeping things sanitary. (3) HOSPICE CARE - as advanced care as possible without being a nurse or holding a medical degree. Should be required to spend quality time and companionship, meals, know how to work with dementia or other illness, help with meds (med monitoring), emotional support, toileting, diaper changing, full body cleansing (bed bound clients) etc. In Portland the two main companies are Home Instead and Visiting Angels, there are many other smaller organizations but these are the most popular are largest. We've worked with and tried about 5 companies over 6 years of care service, most are terrible at least 50% percent of the time. Visiting Angels is no exception. You'd think when you spend $20K a month you'd at least get reliable care ... also be ready for no-shows, caregivers who can't figure out a lock box to get in, can't cook, don't know how to make coffee, don't speak English, might burn your house down letting toast catch on fire, don't follow instructions ... it really is a treacherous and dangerous path sometimes. Visiting Angels will sell you their whole sales pitch of how they are in business because they care about people, not the paycheck. What a crock ! We offered to keep working with them or give them all our shifts if they would negotiate the rate, meanwhile Home Instead was open to negotiating the rate after pulling some teeth - we asked V.A. if they would be willing the match the rate to keep our business - Absolute zero interest or willing to negotiate! So we dropped using them, quality wasn't great anyways. The only good things about V.A. is they were more open to having odd hours of shifts so long as they met the 4 hour minimum, but 5, 6, 7, 12 hours or whatever were fine. We tried split shifts between Home Instead and V.A. for a few months, for the most part it was pretty good in the beginning. V.A. was also a little less strict about med reminders (med assistance) and driving offsite to run errands or go pickup food. V.A. will refund the shift cost if care service was unacceptable. Eventually our family members' needs changed and she went from being semi-mobile to pretty much bed-bound over few weeks and then hospice. Other complaints with V.A. - Our family member needed advanced care at the time, which required transfers from bed to wheel chair and bathroom and lounging chair. V.A. would often send us newbies with ZERO transfer experience and no previous training ! Just throw em' in there and hope for the best. It takes a bit of skill and methods to safely transfer. So dangerous - Awful! Caregiving isn't rocket science, it's about care. Some caregivers will sit in another room their entire shift and only interact with the client when called on, others feel like they need to be busy doing something the entire time. Leaving the client alone the entire time is completely unacceptable and should not be allowed, but it still happens. Be sure to let the provider know of poor service! As crappy as Home Instead can be, at least they were willing to negotiate the rate a little, considering the fortune of $$ spent over the years it's really not asking much! Eventually our family member will pass, and we'll no longer need any of these services. Their final days shouldn't be filled with worry of poor care or haggling the rate. read more

We moved Grammy to this caregiving service a couple months ago from a different company. They assured us they had enough caregivers to cover the shifts we needed. At first everyhting was great, grammy was happy, we were happy. Soon after is where we were starting to have trouble. First they couldnt find a replcement caregiver because someone called out. Grammy was left alone with no one to help her. Second time I dont quite remeber if she just didnt show up or something happened. Again grammy was left alone. Then they assured us they would administer her meds. My wife had gone over to refill the weekly med box, and she had noticed that there were several days that still had meds in them. My grammy has heart problems and diabetes. Her meds are important. Anyways, the customer service we recived was garbage. Susan was very short and disnt seem to genuinely care about the sistuation, all she could say was she would pass on the information. Do not recommend. read more

The Visiting Angels have been fantastic. My mother is 80yrs old with late stage Parkinson's and Dementia. The family primarily handles her care, but we have relief a few times a week from the caregiver Dolores. Dolores has done an outstanding job replacing me in my duties including medication administration, meal preparation, light housekeeping, care and attention to Logan the Schipperke, as well as supervision of my mother in her ADLs. Dolores has done the very difficult job of earning my mother's trust and respect, and when she ends her shift and says goodbye, my mother asks when she will return. I appreciate when the nursing staff checks in, because it keeps the caregivers on their toes always. Again, a very good agency with top notch caregivers. I'd give the 5 star rating but they are expensive, and have had two rate increases in the past two years. Nevertheless, great care! Larisa Benner read more

Look elsewhere. There are better qualified caregivers and better run businesses. I used this service for 3 or 4 months after my partner's return home from a 7 month hospital stay after experiencing a stroke. He needed help with mobility, going to the bathroom, getting dressed, eating, etc. They sent a myriad of caregivers of different levels of experience including a girl who was barely out of high school. For $25/hour, I expect more. They couldn't fulfill his needs. There was also no consistency as I was getting new caregivers sent almost every day who I had to spend at least an hour training. We kept hearing from some of the better caregivers that they had asked to be assigned to us more often or permanently, but the scheduling department was so messed up they couldn't ever figure things out. I was also never told which caregiver to expect so it was always a surprise when I opened the door and I could never find a consistent person in the scheduling dept who could even help make sure the schedule was accurate for upcoming weeks. Super terrible. Then I waited months to get a final bill until I called to ask for one to be sent. After I paid the bill, they sent us to collections... after it was paid. I know they didn't mean to, it's just very representative of how disorganized this company is. read more

My dad fell down the stairs while visiting me from out of town. He had 14 broken bones, over half in his face and skull. After being with him 24x7 in intensive care for a week, we were exhausted. He then got transferred to a special monitoring unit where the nurse to patient ratio was significantly reduced. With a head injury causing some confusion, he was having trouble not getting out of bed when it was time to urinate and he was occasionally fidgeting with (and pulling on) his feeding tube. The hospital's solution was to restrain his hands, feet and chest, despite the fact that a gentle, verbal reminder was all he needed to calm him. They would take the restraints off when we visited, so our exhausting 24x7 vigil continued. Dad's solution to the restraints was to wiggle, ask for scissors (to cut them off) and to pervasively fidget with the straps... basically anything except resting and healing. OUR solution was Visiting Angels. They provided a personal care aide and/or CNA to sit with my dad on overnights so we could both keep him safe and unrestrained. He felt better having an advocate and someone to help him do self care more quickly than the nurse call button could accommodate. And we felt better supporting him all day after a good night's sleep. The arrangement worked out so well that we had Visiting Angels continue their coverage as he moved to rehab for two more weeks and eventually to my house before being able to fly home. All told, Visiting Angels was quick, responsive, consistent and amazingly helpful. They played a key role in my dad's recovery and our sanity as we supported him through this ordeal. Best company I've worked for. This Beaverton visiting angels branch is especially wonderful. - They hire experienced professionals from the beginning - Flexible scheduling - Great staff training - Decent wages, not amazing but pretty good still compared to many. - Great managers - serious, constructive, firm, friendly, helpful, accommodating, welcoming, kind, thankful, positive. - The scheduling team & case managers are superb at matching clients and caregivers for successful, compatible matches that meet the needs of all parties. - Great about paperwork, policies, following rules and regulations, Caregiver-office communication, office-client communication, keeping client health a priority, and all other serious areas of business that I encountered. All the binders and medicines are usually completely up to date, I rarely ever saw one that had any problems. Medication administration was never a problem. Even small details like a missing pill were addressed immediately and seriously. All those things are very important to the office, as as a result, everyone else takes it seriously as a top priority as well. - Accurate wage reporting, no guessing times! - One of the best parts about this company, from the caregiver perspective, is how incredibly appreciative they are. On the phone and through their programs as well. Their program "angel wings" rewards caregivers for many behaviors (and they are actually rewards I wanted that turn to public/private gratitude and cash. On the same topic, when a caregiver completes a training (which are actually engaging!!), they test the caregivers on the skills learned, as well as often giving a nicely printed "certificate of achievement" for taking the class! Beaverton Visiting Angels is great at rewarding staff in a significant way, for actions that matter, on a regular basis even. - I believe the clients and caregivers both benefit from it being a large branch, so that there are always more caregivers who can pick up last minute shifts, and always more clients for caregivers who need work. - Great at being there for families and clients when they need it last minute. I saw it countless times. Always getting emails about someone needing care, and it seemed like the clients got that care nearly 100% of the time, if not 100%. - Hire an outside anonymous company to do surveys about the company! - I've never met so many clients that are happy and so thankful for all of us angels. I believe that reflected positively on the company, that every client I went to was either happy, or generally happy and I was able to keep that trend going by being an angel. I believe the scheduling team has a major role to play in this because they do a great job matching clients and caregivers with compatible needs, and even hobbies, personality, etc. which helps the experience for everyone be better. I feel that this company especially excels with clients who have particular taste (you know, those ladies who have spend 60 years learning the RIGHT way to do something), as they are able to schedule caregivers who have the empathy and detail orientation to understand those needs. On the off chance-- if you are a family member of a client, and you're having difficulty with a caregiver, don't get discouraged. Talk to the office about your concerns, talk to a case manager, see what can be changed and/or have a new caregiver come. The company is well worth giving a good shot. There are always things that can be changed to make it better for you and your loved one! - Clients' opinions were taken very seriously. It gave clients more control in their lives by having input on their care/caregivers/ etc. I'm proud to have worked here. So proud to have helped all those clients. After over 20 years of service in the field of long term care, it became time to put a plan in place for my own Mother. She wanted to share a home together, so we moved to the west side and my husband and I began providing the full time care. Within the first year, we realized her actual care needs were significantly higher than before her move, so, we added some home health services and selected Visiting Angels. Not just from the perspective of a retired long term care professional, but as a daughter, I wish to recommend Visiting Angels with as many stars as I can muster. They take great care in their hiring and training practices, have excellent systems in place, and go above and beyond to do whatever they can to anticipate the needs of the person in need, and their family. Equally as important, they take the time to acknowledge the staff, who are all too often, overlooked in the process; as family members, most of us realize without a good team, all our efforts can be in vain. As an example, prior to choosing visiting Angels, I actually started with a different agency. Although they did well in the first 90 days, after that period, the quality of staff dropped, and the systems in place left me having to place phone calls to them at least once each week. In short, that first agency actually ADDED to my worries. So, from a retired professional known for her commitment to quality elder advocacy...I give Visiting Angels the highest recommendation possible.
