I have been a Registered Nurse for 35 years and a licensed CCM (Certified Case Manager) for 15…read moreyears. I'd like to share my experience with Intrepid Hospice hoping to give some insight to others who need to hire a Hospice company. This company did not provide the support or compassion that is expected. The Medical Director Dr. Meehan never saw my mother, not even once, in the 6 months that he was in charge of her care, and never learned about her individual medical history. I was never able to speak with him about questions/concerns with her care, but instead had to go through a Nurse Practitioner and was told they report back to him and are his eyes and ears. Yet Medicare is paying him for the medical care he is supposed to provide. I did insist on talking with him prior to signing him to be her PCP MMD, and he was in a hurry and seemed to put my mother in a box consistent to what he knows about elderly patients. The RN Renee, who was assigned to my mother was inexperienced and a poor communicator. Several times when discussing next steps in my mother's care, she informed me that people should take care of their family in their own home. Renee knew that I worked full time and aging myself, and therefore unable to do this. A health care worker should never tell others what they should do nor shame them into feeling bad when their family member is dying. I had to constantly ask Renee for updates and specifics instead of her letting me know. The RN did very little for my mom, and it was the aide who gave personal care to my mother, which was our only bright spot. Glenda the aid was a big help in keeping my mother clean and comfortable as she could be and gave her some dignity back. The Social Worker was Jodi and she offered zero to the team care. Even in my experience of case management, I did need some support on financial info, insight into Medicaid in SC and placement availabilities in the area if my mother ended up needing to move from her assisted living into a Nursing Home. I set up a phone meeting with Jodi since this should be her expertise and she could do nothing but try to give me the website for Medicaid which she did not know and had to google, which I could have done myself. Joey the team chaplain was so so. He visited my mother a few times and located a Priest to do sacrament in late stages for my mother. Joey did not come to see her in the last days or offer to visit us. He also turned down our request to give a short sermon at her brief local service before transporting to her home state to be buried with her husband. Intrepid did switch us to a different nurse, Hayley in the last 2 weeks of care prior to my mother passing away. Hayley did have a couple years experience in hospice and they did bump up my mothers care from 2 days per week to 5 days per week. When my mother passed, no one from Intrepid ever reached out by phone or email. They did send a standard and basic card several weeks later. Our family felt no support from this Hospice company, and I highly recommend going with a different company. In our area there is no reliable Inpatient Hospice except for Carolines Cottages, and they are very, very limited in what they can do and have only 6 cottages aiming to keep a patient less than 1 week. If you are looking for knowledge, compassion and supportive Hospice care, Intrepid is not your company.
