We have been very happy with the care and compassion Brightstar has for our aunt and feel relieved that we made this decision.

A review of Benton House Assisted Living- by a family member and RN of 35 years- earned a rating…read more2.5/5 stars from our family Worth mentioning firstly, are some Superstar care givers- Jackie the RN, aides- Josie, Linda, Joann, Keena, Tina, and maintenance/helper Eli Residents can't come out of room in nice robe or lounge clothes, need to be out at dining room early for breakfast fully dressed Charged $5 extra per meal every day to be brought to their room, even if they were having health issues or on hospice care Food was good until chef of first 5 yrs of opening left, then food was not great Served only in Styrofoam containers if served in room Lacked orientation for resident and families to building and life in assisted living No help or caring for family to learn how to support loved ones new to assisted living Call light response time was terrible even the call light in the bathroom, where residents would need immediate assistance if there were a fall or issue Meds were not consistent with doctor's orders, and some given at wrong times. Med tech for the most part had minimal training on meds If the resident is not an easy and quiet person the admin will look for issues to have them leave. Admin prefers to run a 'cruise ship' type environment which is not realistic to an elderly person who needs to leave their home and independent living due to needing assistance Constantly short staffed due to the corporate cutting numbers of workers on duty for financial gain, leaving the building severely under staffed and not equipped to handle situations that arise in this environment At night when the front door is locked, the door bell is used, and the response time was very long and most times would need to call the main phone number to ask assistance Weekend staffing was terrible and the front public restroom on weekend was very dirty and messy Many times, some of the not-so-great staff were seen sitting around and heard talking about inappropriate subjects and very unprofessional instead of helping residents and families Mail, newspapers and flower delivery was frequently delivered to wrong resident or not at all. When mail was delivered it was put on kitchen counter or on a table where it could be lost or misplaced by the residents. I waited on a check to be delivered made many calls to the company it was coming from to find out where it was, and ended up finding the check dated 6 weeks prior, behind my family's bedside table. I had even asked admin to help look out for the check. Specific to corporate admin and local director- Facility is operated for financial gain only- no caring or concern as a healthcare facility. Our family member was within a couple of months of dying and on hospice care. The facility admin stated that if she went to inpatient hospice for a short bit, they would need to re-assess her and likely would not accept her back. Also, we as family of resident were served with a letter requesting her to 'move out' since it is against DEHEC (SC state health department) rules to have a person in assisted living if they cannot use the call light. Admin/Director blamed DEHEC saying the Benton House would be in 'violation' if they kept her. We worked with the SC Ombudsman who was helpful and informed us the Benton House could fill out a waiver for DEHEC giving them the option to have our family member be able to stay in their apartment/home where they had lived for 3 1/2 and be able to pass away at home. After stalling and telling us they were meeting about if they would do this or not, they decided they would not sign the waiver. Instead of spending as much quality time as we could with our family member and conserving money for her care, we were forced to look at nursing homes that we knew she wouldn't live long enough to get to, and talked to attorneys for answers. To make matters worse, 4 days before our family member passed, we were told by email that our family member was now 'allowed' to stay. The admin and corporate tried to save face at this time, offering visiting family members lunch, drinks, etc., and offering their prayers. Way too little, way too late.

The facility is fairly new and has an upscale luxurious appearance. There are many other features that illuminate the beauty of Bayshore; the apartments are airy & roomy, the spa & swimming pool layout and design is spectacular especially while overlooking the bay. They also have plenty of enjoyable activities daily and most importantly Happy Hour at the 5th floor bar with fabulous views from the bar area or outdoor porch. What about the indoor movie theatre or the beautiful dining room with wonderful available menu items. What is impressive also about Bayshore also is that they have extended disable care by a very caring reliable staff along with knowledgeable nurse. The staff is also is open minded to suggestions from tenants which is not common in most places. The experienced ownership of Bayshore truly understands the management of assistant living facilities and it's obvious they design Bayshore as if they were to be residents themselves today.

For context to this review, I am the child of a former resident at Bayshore and had experienced the…read morelocation multiple times firsthand whenever I visited. This location, although beautifully designed and situated on the intercoastal, unfortunately, lacks in many critical areas of guest welfare. The specifics are as follows. If you are a guest with FULL capabilities (e.g., able to walk, eat on your own and therefore take full advantage of all the activities and benefits), I could understand why Bayshore would be an attraction. I met many residents who originated in colder climates and have found the Hilton Head Island weather more ideal for their retirement years.  For residents who have or need any additional care is where Bayshore goes well off its rails. The facility doesn't employ Resident Nurses (RNs) in any capacity other than upper management; their presence is extremely limited even at that level. I met one RN in total on every visit. Most of the 'nurses' and 'aides' are general staff members, and I would guess their training was almost entirely on the job. Having had a few conversations with 'key staff,' I learned they had very limited prior experience. This is concerning and evident as I witnessed my parent's care during their stay.  Like most older adults, there comes a time when they become less ambulatory. My parent also experienced this phase when we witnessed a steep drop-off in quality care. Residents are provided 'nurse call buttons' to wear in the event they require any level of immediate attention. Almost every time my parent pressed the button, aides would not arrive or respond until 30-120 minutes after. On one occasion, I witnessed my parent pressing the button as they needed to use the bathroom (legal right residents must be allowed according to law btw), and nobody arrived. 20 minutes after, the button was pushed, we were finally visited by an aide who informed us they were busy and in a meeting and that my parent should just use their briefs. Insane and inhumane. After another 70 minutes and still no visit from an aide, I personally walked to the closest staff station on the floor only to find ~6 women standing around chatting and eating chips. I reminded them that my parent was still waiting for support, and they responded that they'd get to us asap. It was another 15 minutes before anyone showed - which was too late.  The unfortunate aspect of this ordeal is that the response described above is constant, not the occasional experience. Unacceptable - especially at the rates they charge.  I can go on and on with numerous observations, and I urge anyone considering this facility to either reconsider or evaluate what is critical to your family members' needs. The moment residents require ANY nursing level support is the moment things will likely go wrong. I don't want to hear about staffing issues due to labor shortage - they sure seem like they had enough staff. The focus should be on ensuring staff has compassion, empathy, proper nursing skills, and an overall desire to be helpful. How about training? Anyone can work a fry machine at Mcdonald's. However, this type of work requires a special individual. I'm just not sure Bayshore has an abundance of those types of individuals. That said, a handful of wonderful staff members and aides seem to care (one from the UK that I recall meeting and experiencing); however, the vast majority honestly don't seem to care much, including its leadership.  For all residents, the food options need to be questioned from a nutritional standpoint. Anyone with any special dietary concern seems to consistently get overlooked and made to feel like they're a bother. The attitude comes from leadership and trickles down to the workforce.  I wish this review were better; however, I need to be honest to warn others that the assumption their family members are receiving the ultimate care, as Bayshore and its CEO promise. It just won't be so.  I can provide numerous observations and experiences and decided to limit to the few mentioned above for ease of reading and as a warning to others. If you are considering using Bayshore. I urge you to seek reviews from current residents without the administration finding out, as they will do their best to provide you with only a censored pre-selected group.
