They have a bit of a curve at the entrance to slow people down, which I appreciate. It was still pre-dawn and the place was nicely lit for security. What is not to LOVE about the VA Welcome center, including the giant LOVE sign they have in front. This is a clean and no frills welcome center. Don't expect lavish tours or free coffee and orange juice, it is mostly unstaffed. However, do not let that deter you, it's beautiful with plenty of quiet to rest and take a nap with ample space to walk the dogs. They have a few vending machines and the standard pamphlets promoting Virginia. The bathrooms are always clean and serviceable. I have only had issue one time here and it was only because they just mopped and I slid through the bathroom, though more my clumsiness than anything I'd like to think. The landscaping is very well maintained and quite peaceful if you want to stop and enjoy nature for a bit. On long road trips a little peace can mean making it there in a good mood or a bad. Plenty of space for the dogs to roam around and find a spot and for you to stretch your legs. read more

This is the Virginia Welcome Center along Interstate 81 Northbound, coming out of Tennessee. The welcome center sneaks up on you once you enter the state. This welcome center is for cars only. There is a separate truck rest area further north along the interstate. The reservations and questions desk is staffed from 8:30 am to 5 pm daily, but the restrooms and such are open 24 hours a day. My most recent visit here was on July 28, 2019. After getting through Tennessee, it was time to take a restroom break in my home state of Virginia. We would still have about another 8 hours to get home from here. It was good to get up and move around for a bit and stretch out the legs. The first stop was definitely a visit to the restroom. The restroom was clean and well maintained. They had maintenance staff there working at the time too. Moving on to the welcome center inside, they have info in there for activities throughout Virginia, from the mountains to the shore. There are also vending machines inside the building for snacks and drinks as well. Outside, they have a very large expanse of greenery to do some walking and moving around. There are several picnic tables available to use as well. There is a board giving information about The Crooked Road, which is Virginia's heritage music trail. As you leave the welcome center, there is a symbol of the state seal as well. Overall, this was an excellent welcome center. The staff were warm and inviting, restrooms were clean and well maintained, plenty of outdoor space, and giving it the Virginia touch. If your travels take you this way, you should definitely stop in, even if it's just to take a short break. read more

It's okay. Cars park on the line, not in the spots. The men's room was cordoned off with tape and signs and - locked! Signs are sun-faded. The nice flower emblem for 'Virginia' (to me) is at the wrong end of the turnoff. Rebel view: 3 read more

When you've been traveling for many hours any "Welcome Center" is a prize! This one is basic and had vending machines, a small dog walking area, and some tables. I don't believe this site is staffed (although I'm not sure). It's a good place to stop and rest . read more

The I-81 northbound Welcome Center is a mess with regard to bathroom facilities. Basically, they have a designated male and female restroom plus a spare to use if either one or the other are closed for cleaning, The spare room which can be seen, always has the "male" designation on it which is closed and blocked with "closed for cleaning" signs. Rather than see if there is anything around the corner they barged into the women's restroom. One day I'm in the handicap stall when I see the feet in the next stall facing backward s ( as if they were straddling the toilet. Naturally this is disconcerting to see a woman do this. The person starts to leave and is confronted by a voice that says, "you know you're in the woman's restroom." She gets the response, "oh well these things do happen." So, there was a male in the stall next to mine. The next time, I see a school aged child lathering his hands and playing with the soap, the child is old enough to use the male restroom without supervision. I told him he was old enough to use the male restroom and that it was OPEN. He leaves and his family is outside in the car waiting on him. The next time, a woman shoved her 2 teenage sons inside the women's restroom while the men's room was open. Labor Day Weekend, there's a strange electric billboard sign "portables only" warning signs before the exit, so we assumed they were restricting another type of vehicle as they do restrict truckers. Now dont laugh, because other travellers misunderstood the sign too. Well the maintenance guy has a lot of free time because he doesn't have to mop floors so he sits on the bench looking in our cars as we come in. Well just because you have portables doesn't mean they shouldn't be checked for supplies or cleanliness. The one I went into had human excrement smeared all over the toilet seat. So if you use portables,cleanliness is just as important Additionally there's a sign at each of the portables that we have to maintain a 30 foot parking distance which would mean we have to park out on I-81 and walk in as there were portables on both sides of the rest area roadway. The complaint I submitted about males breaching the women's restroom never got a response read more

Bathrooms were spacious and clean, the people were very friendly and anxious to answer any questions we might have, and we got some very cute pictures out front and inside pretending to sing with guitars. Beautiful landscaping and many areas to walk around and stretch. One of the nicer visitor centers I've seen. read more

First potty stop on the way back home, bathroom area is a bit small, only 3 stalls and lots of people and some of the toilets didn't flush and their those auto ones. They have tons of snack vending machines, more snacks than toilets!! But yeah it's a rest stop, not to much to do with a rest stop ya know! read more

They were so knowledgable and very friendly. We stopped in to ask about a place to stay in the Appalachians that would offer affordable hotels and some opportunities to see the mountains. They pointed us to Wytheville and told us about Big Walker Lookout. I'm really glad we stopped for the info. Great people. read more
