Hidden away in the mountains of southern VA, is a great lake with water that looked crystal clear! You can paddleboat, kayak, canoe and swim! The swim spot is more than twice the size of Lake Anna State Park. And surrounded by the beautiful mountains. I hiked the 6 miles around the lake with the stop off ay Molly's Knob. It's gorgeous! I had preplanned this trip to see these parks down here many months ago. While, I camped in a tent at Claytor Lake, I rented a Yurt for two nights here at Hungary Mother. I've never stayed in a Yurt before and I loved it! It was hot though, don't get me wrong. That Yurt was like a volcano tube all day and 1/2 the night. Luckily I was gone during the daytime and due to location, around 3am to 6am it wasn't very hot at all. LoL. Mountains make the difference! The Yurt was spacious and lovely. I'll rent again in the future. Employees were nice. Gift shop was amazing. Unlike most other state parks, this one had long trails. Like I said, one was 6 miles..usually, at other parks, they have .5 and .9 mile trails that you peice together to make a 6 mile trail. Those who've been, know what I mean. My favorite VA State Park is Sky Meadows. Perfect for me and only 25 min from my house. Hungry Mother is second place winner for me!! Love it!

It was close to lunch time, so we decided to go to check it out and have a picnic lunch there, lake-side. Road signage to the main part of the park wasn't great, and our GPS took us to the campground which was a few miles from the Visitor's Center. A camper sent us in the right direction. We stopped at the Visitor's Center, paid the $7 parking fee, spoke with staff, and picked up a map. We learned from staff that Hungry Mother was one of VA's original six state parks. It's known for its woodlands and placid 108 acre lake. It offers miles of hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating (including rentals), a beach (with concessions in-season), camping and cabin rentals, and special events and programs. Our goal though was to take a short walk and to find a place to eat our picnic lunch! We found the Lake Trail loop, which is a 5.7 mile hiking and biking trail. The first mile parallels Park Blvd, and was gently rolling and relatively flat. Plus, it had picnic tables lake-side! Hungry Mother State Park was a pleasant place to stop during our travels. We hope to return in the future to explore it further. Slight mark-down in rating due to insufficient signage and for charging $7 for parking for a short visit and even when most amenities were still closed off-season. This is state of VA policy, not specific to Hungry Mother.

Beautiful and Serene Park…read more This park is located in the Cherokee National Forest. My Harley-Loving husband takes us here all the time, he has a ride he calls the Watuaga Lake Loop. It is a great ride in the hotter months because of the higher elevations. For him, it is a great ride through both the Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests just getting to this lake. I love the ride because I love the water views with the mountains in the background at this lake. I have posted a couple of photos. There are actually a few parks around this lake however this particular one seems especially nice. I have seen small boats on this lake but never noticed any water sports such has water skiing. I imagine the water is probably too cold for that even in the summer. So that being said, it is a very quiet lake. We love boating also and are considering a pontoon for this lake. The park has the basics -- restrooms and picnic tables. We generally just stop for a picnic lunch. Cannot beat the views for lunch. I recommend this park for a picnic, or a solitary quiet time, or a romantic day trip to just name a few suggestions.

I checked in here at Mount Rogers National Recreation location because it was the only place…read moreresembling where I was going. I did actually stop here but the place was closed. They had bathrooms and pamphlets. Im posting my hike here. Mount Rogers is the highest peak in VA. And a good 20 min from here. From here to actual Mount Rogers was quite the experience . I have an Ecosport. The engine is about the size of a matchbox car. It was dicey getting there going around and up and down the mountains.. sheesh.. but it's worth it. I can say I have conquered the Mount Rogers! I hiked to the top. The highest peak in VA! Yay! I entered through Grayson Highland Park. (I've already reviewed that park) the hike to Mount Rogers was mostly via the Appalachian Trail and then spur to blue markers all the way up. The best part? There a beautiful forest near the top that has vibrant green moss all over the trees and ground and trail as well. One hiker I spoke with called it and Elf Forest and she's right. That's how it felt. Really beautiful and quiet and mysterious. I reached the top. I came back down The top was uneventful. Most of the scenery was on the way. A great adventure!

She is knowledgeable, passionate about caving and all around fun! She was generous with her time, company and supplies, providing fanny packs full of snacks and bottled water for all and gloves and knee pads to make the experience easier on our bodies. My group of 4 (3 first timers) had a fabulous time exploring Worley's Cave with her. Beginners can feel confident and at ease with how well she obviously knows the cave. Folks with caving experience looking for a little extra challenge will also get lots of opportunities for "side missions" to shimmy and crawl through small spaces, although there is no pressure to participate in those if someone would rather not be in tight spaces. All the stars! I can't wait to book another trip!

Much of the local mountain biking scene maintains these trails to exceptional levels. High knob was vandalized / burned down a number of years ago, but the rebuild place gives just as good a views and is more accessible. Not as good in the Parkitecture front, but does it's purpose. Flag Rock is part of the area and is a beautiful overlook to Norton. Another "must see" spot. Numerous trails and routes from this part of the area. Also, there are a ton of camping, picnicing, shelters and other ways to spend some good times outdoors with friends and family.

Our family is staying in a house near the marina for vacation. We decided to rent a pontoon boat…read morefor the day. Reserving the boat was easy. We were asked to get there 15 minutes early to fill out paperwork. I think we should have gotten there more like 20-25 minutes early because fitting for life vests took a little longer than expected. The boat was nice and came with nice life vests, not just the typical orange ones. When we came back in, the dock employees were there ready to help dock the boat. Any day on Holston Lake is a good day. Definitely a do again!

We believe it is because we are in contract negotiations. They are purposing a contract that says they will not continue to move our houses unless we pay a 35% increase. However if we get someone else to move them they will not reduce our rent. Three years ago they raised our rent 30% to continue moving our floating cabins. The contract states we move our own cabins. How are you suppose to move your own cabin if you don't live here or are physically unable. A company that is all about customer service,, I don't think so.
