Very short hike to see the falls. You can be in and out within 15-20 minutes. Beautiful scenery.

5+ stars for the short walk to amazing falls. It is an AMAZINGLY SHORT WALK. -5 stars for all the off trail destruction. A little of the naturalist always dies in me when I see trails that just go EVERYWHERE. Parking must be super annoying to those that live locally. Plan to walk a ways before you actually get to the trail. We elected to walk up and beyond the falls and the trail just sort of disappears after about .65 miles. I suppose if you're carrying a compass or keeping the creek to one side, you'd be okay for a while. The trail does deviate away from visuals of the creek. It's wonderful forest though!

Getting out of Anchorage for the day and looking to do some light exploring, we found ourselves at Virgin Creek Falls. The trail head is located at the end of a nondescript street. We parked and made the short, easy walk to the falls. It was quite muddy because of the melted precipitation but it was so quiet and peaceful. Coming in late October, we had the entire place to ourselves. The falls were absolutely beautiful and all of the greenery surrounding us was inspiring. It was nice to just take in nature and all of the quiet solitude surrounding us. Nice, easy hike in the Girdwood area.

If you've read my hiking reviews and thought "Andrew says everything is short, but he LIES!" Well, this is the "hike" for you. This thing is dang short. You could probably walk from your car to the Virgin herself in less than the time it takes to listen to your average pop song. The falls are pretty spectacular. Much better than some of the other "falls hikes" that shall remain nameless. You can get right up close to it, without much peril, as long as you don't mind getting wet. The hardest part about photographing this place is that it's very crowded. You'll have to wait for tripod-glued photographers (guilty) and selfie-seeking teens before you can get a clear shot of the falls. The trail does keep going after the falls, for how far...I'm not sure. It continues to wind up Virgin Creek. This is a great, literal, "rainy day" hike. This lush rainforest area looks even better when it's wet, and the big trees provide some decent cover.

Visited this lovely stroll in the woods, for the first time, on a snow flurry Friday. Virgin Creek Falls isn't on private property (I believe), but where you park, reminds me of Barbara Falls in Eagle River. Lots of "no parking," signage, so you'll need to pull up as far as possible. As other Yelpers have mentioned, this is definitely an easy hike. Almost immediately after passing the trail sign you can hear the falls roaring. I always appreciate the uniqueness of Girdwood trails. I love a forest staircase and there are a few in the area. Girdwood is breathtaking in the summer but I'll bet this place gets busy with photographers. Coming on a winter day with heavy snowfall it was still so beautiful and enchanting. We also got privacy to take it all in without being rushed. The falls are truly a sight to behold, I was very grateful to have finally experienced this place.

The easiest hike you will ever do. It's more like a stop. You get out of the car. Walk several paces in. And there is a lovely little waterfall. We had great timing in the morning. Noone was around. And the lighting was stunning. No photo retouches. Just the marvels of nature. I'm so glad I didn't miss it. It's short but that doesn't mean it's not worth it. The crowds started coming. Then we left for breakfast. Which is also when the crowds left town. Perfect schedule for hiking then grub time.

This hike is a bit hard to find but don't let that deter you. It's at a dead end of what seems like a neighborhood street and some private property. But don't worry, there are signs that helps point out the trail so it's not that hard of a find. Relatively accessible. The hike is extremely short. It lasted perhaps 5 minutes or less. But can I just say it is such a worth it place to see. The waterfall is gorgeous and probably one of the biggest here in Anchorage that I've seen so far.

If you're in the area and either: a. want to chase a waterfall b. have a few minutes to spare a 'hike' c. seeking to impress your out of town guests or d. all of the above? Head to the very end of Timberline Drive! It's likely you will see a few other vehicles parked in that little cul de sac. If there is no parking, wait it out, promise it will be a short wait. Heck, if you turn down your music and roll down your window, you could hear the rushing water from your spot. That's how close the falls are. After you park, walk passed the Virgin Creek Falls Trail sign and simply follow the much beaten path. Within a few minutes you will find the clearing to take photos of the falls. Super quick, super easy, great for those who aren't in the best of shape but still crave being outdoors and a bit adventurous. If you like this one, I also suggest you look up Barbara Falls/South Fork Falls, located in Eagle River, Alaska.

When your driving to this spot you think you might be lost cause it's a family neighborhood but just follow the road till it dead ends then you have to park just a little from the trail . But wow what a awesome spot the trail to the falls is not that long at all and well worth a look at .

If you've got a bike, you can connect from even further out very easily. As such, the Lagoon looks a lot like a Gilmore Girls community and is popular with people year round. There are frequently small sponsored events going on- the coolest of which involves ice skating in the winter. I personally love this park because it's a great place to bird watch. It's a fragile breeding ground for aquatic birds (take note dog owners - IT IS NOT OK TO LET YOUR DOGS OFF LEASH HERE OR LET THEM SWIM!) Red Neck Grebes are one if the more unusual arctic birds that breed here. The arctic terns also put on quite a show. Various loons and cranes also make an appearance, as well as some unique ducks. There's also an awesome playground and snack bar for the kiddies. A few years ago they also installed a bike counter that tracks the thousands that use the Tony Knowles at various intervals - it's fun to watch the numbers climb as the season goes on. There's also a free bike maintenance station here. Definitely a great location for lots and tourists alike, but parking is a problem, so carpool or better yet, use the trails!

They have private parking lots for you to park free of charge. It is located near downtown and is a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of the city. It conveniently lies at the intersection of two of Anchorage's most popular trails, the Tony Knowles and Chester Creek trails. There were many runners traveling through while I was there, going through the two little tunnels that run under the road. You will find benches and picnic tables here to sit around the lake. This is home to lots, I mean lots, lots of waterfowl. They seemed aggressive, so I kept my distance. The disc golf course was nice but was covered in snow and mud. The lake is nice and during the winter is converted to an ice hockey/skating rink. My only complaint is that the park could be a little cleaner, even though part is that could be due to me visiting off-season. There were some maintenance guys there do some other stuff. The park is touted as a great place to bird watch in the spring and you can see other animals such as moose, beaver in the early morning or late evening, muskrats, foxes, otters, and minks, year-round, but it is rare. I did not see any of them. This nature park has a calming kind of peace to it, even though you hear the hum of cars on the nearby road. Just sitting on the bench looking out to the lake was so very soothing. If your schedule permits, I highly recommend visiting this place to just relax and recharge.

I agree with other Yelpers when it comes to the trail being secluded and more "in the woods," compared to say, The Tony Knowles trail, which is a favorite of mine. Because of this, you're definitely more likely to see wildlife on this trail, so be bear and moose aware. Carry lots of bug spray. The biggest pro about this trail for me, is all the shallow fresh water access points. Please note, the most secluded parts of this trail are also home to Anchorage's homeless population, so it's best to be aware of your surroundings in general.

Where it approaches a main-vain, it tunnels underneath the road. Chester Creek is also very picturesque in parts. It's got a gentle flow, it's lined with trees, and it's dotted with quaint little wooden bridges. It makes me want to sing "Over the river and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go!" It's decently groomed in the winter, and is the realm of XC skiers and fat bikers, but it can be done with some good waterproof boots, on foot, as well.
