Check in counter for Virgin Australia at Melbourne Airport

As a virgin to Virgin Australia, I had a "meh, it's alright" experience with this carrier for my domestic flight from Melbourne to Sydney. Maybe the flight was too short (only 90 minutes) for me to be able to take full advantage of any in-flight add-ons that are normally offered for long-haul flights. For a relatively new airline company (only 14 years old), I expected a newer entertainment system. The main cabin monitor screens (or at least mine) were old and the buttons on the remote had some crusting crap in the crevices. The sound was muffled, even when turned to the maximum volume, so I couldn't hear well. Frustrated, I settled with reading a magazine instead. Also, there weren't any complimentary snacks offered. But other than those drawbacks, the attendants were very nice and friendly. The leather seats were comfortable, and I slept for a good half hour on my flight. Boarding was quick and efficient, even when we had to do it through the air stairs at the rear of the plane, instead of the more common jet bridge method. If I ever go back to Australia, I'd fly with Virgin Australia for a long-haul international flight, and give them another chance.

Inside of food tray compartment. Nasty!

VA223 MEL to ADL business class. The flight attendant was top notch. The best I have seen so far. But the cleanliness of the plane was not desirable. I will let the pic speak for itself. Come on Mr. Branson, invest more money on upkeep of your fleet for more return customer. My first time with Virgin and not too impressed. 3 stars for the business section flight attendant.

I manage 2 travel agencies and virgin has always been my domestic airline of choice, do yourself a favor use them and join the frequent flyer program!! The have the mix right between price and quality, not as expensive as Qantas but better than the budget airlines. If travelling domestic baggage is included and on the long haul eg Perth-Melbourne you get food, drink and the tv in back of the seats. They have a great frequent flyer program, free to join and allows family pooling of points and status credits enabling a higher chance of getting to gold status and getting perks like lounge Access/priority boarding and baggage, you can also earn points and redeem with affiliate airlines, Etihad, Air new Zealand, Singapore, Delta and South African. Just tested out the new "the business" long all domestic business class seating, was great one of the best business class ive been in,6ft bed with lie flat recliner, noise cancelling headphones and dishes like red curry with duck and lychee.

Where to begin? I regret booking three flights in advance. Otherwise, Quantas exceeds on all…read morecounts. Jetstar is an economy airline. I pack light, but they make everything difficult. Checking baggage weight at the boarding gate and very old tight seats. Worse is some of the staff like the heavy set woman and Cairns. She immediately had an attitude when I asked where I was sitting. Even though I purchased extra weight for carry on, it registered as check-in. When I asked if I could just carry on, she flatly refused and waited to charge me extra even though I was only carrying 16 KG when I I paid online for 25kg. Avoid the hassle unless you are small and carrying under 7 kg. Otherwise, the price will be comparable with Qantas even though they charge more upfront. They don't have all the limitations that Jetstar imposes. Avoid avoid and abort.

Duplicate review from 10/27/23…read more First of all, it was a whole experience getting here... My fault for not looking at my emails, etc. But why did I have to go to the international airport for a domestic flight...? Then a crooked taxi cab driver ripped us off driving from the domestic to international terminal because we did not have enough time to hop on the free shuttle. This happened to so many people we met at the Jetstar terminal. Quality/Quantity - Low cost carrier. And they are proud of it. Advertises it aggressively, part of their branding. For the people reading from the US - Think Frontier, Spirit low cost. If you know, you KNOW! On our flight back, our fault (not theirs), we went over the luggage weight of only 10kg (22 lbs). This applies to BOTH the carry on and backpack together, which I did not know. My two empty bags alone probably weighed 5kg... The penalty was $65AUD, probably more than the cost of our one way flight per person, LOL! Atmosphere - No thrills, no frills. As advertised, you get what you pay for. Service - Minimum service. Cut and pasted from their website (might be outdated...): Our 10-point Customer Guarantee This Jetstar Customer Guarantee applies to all flights operated by Jetstar Airways (JQ) and Jetstar Asia (3K) 1. Your safety is our highest priority. 2. We commit to provide the lowest fares with our 'Price Beat Guarantee'.* 3. Our team are always here to help, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 4. We'll let you know your choices if your flight is changed before you travel. 5. We'll keep you updated and provide options if things don't go to plan on the day. 6. You will get what you paid for. 7. We'll resolve issues quickly. 8. You can have confidence in how quickly we will refund your money. 9. We share your passion for protecting our environment. 10. We commit to the privacy of your personal information. Price - Inexpensive. Again, you get what you pay for. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success. We will be better prepared if we ever use you again.

I wasn't impressed by these guys. They were over an hour late showing up to the gate, due to the fact that the plane had some maintenance issues at the other airport and didn't get to take off on schedule. Since we were running late, our pilot seemed to ignore storms and turbulence and plowed through them in a very bumpy flight. The plane seemed pretty old and run down. It was in serious need of an upgrade. Even the flight attendants' uniforms were retro. They looked straight outta the 70's. Everything costs extra with these super budget guys. Need something to drink? That'll be extra. Surcharges for everything except going to the lavatories. Thankfully, my luggage and I arrived intact.

I took a round trip flight from Melbourne to Sydney and thought my experience was just fine. I…read morebooked my flight at the last minute (two days in advance) and even though I was new to Tigerair's process, everything went smoothly. When you book the flight, they are very clear and upfront in stating that there is a weight limit on the one piece of luggage you're permitted to bring and also that food/beverages are not included in the price. The cost of airfare is the lowest compared to the other options, so you get what you pay for - airfare from one city to another and nothing more. If you decide to use Tigerair, make sure you check in for your flight online so that it's one less thing to worry about at the airport. I think they let you check in 72 hours in advance. Also, if you have a carry on and know it's under the weight limit, you can go ahead through airport security and go straight to the gate. No need to stop by the Tigerair check-in. They'll double check the weight of your carry-on at the gate. I will admit that they will corral you like cattle at the gate. If you fly out from Melbourne, you'll have to walk onto the tarmac to board. If you're not okay with that, you should go with a different airline. Otherwise, accept that you're using a budget airline.

It is quite…read morepricey at $18 one way but as a tourist visiting Melbourne the first time, I highly recommend this option. Just follow the signs and you will find the bus station and just get your ticket right from the booth. I would just get the one way as there is no money saved for a return ticket and the chances of losing your ticket might mean your need to pay another $18 to get back! The ride was fast and smooth. I did not use the free hotel transfer which is included in the fare as I was just staying at an Airbnb just across the Station. If you have more than 2 people, maybe taking a taxi directly to your hotel is a better choice.

It cost around 36 AUD for a roundtrip bus ride. The bus takes you from the Melbourne airport to Southern Cross station. The ride takes about 10-15 minutes each way depending on traffic. From there you can walk down the road and hop on a tram to the city center. Pro tip for international travelers: the tram within the city center is FREE! Wifi is included with your purchase and you can use it while riding the bus. Overall a positive experience. The cost of the ride is pricey, but definitely beats waiting around at the airport during a long layover.
