JetStar is like the JetBlue or Southwest of Australia but with both domestic and international routes. I can see how it could be a terrible time flying with them internationally but for short domestic flights, I like them. I've flown Sydney-Melbourne and Melbourne-Cairns with them. The airfare is cheaper than most. They don't have in-flight entertainment so, bring whatever would keep you busy. My flights have all been 30 minutes delayed and that's worth docking a few stars, right? But what I appreciate about this airline company is the wonderful flight attendants they have. They're always so pleasant and helpful. The best example was on today's flight. What would've been my biggest nightmare with 2 crying kids in my row on a 3.5hr flight was made better by the male flight attendant. He helped the kids' dad make them stop crying. It worked for one kid. But watching how patient he was was remarkable. Awesome job, sir! The same flight attendant filled my empty bottle with water. I was not expecting such kindness.

Jetstar is a Low Cost Carrier (LCC) and shouldn't be compared to Qantas, Virgin, Singapore Airways, etc. They're in a different basket. Amongst it's competitors Jetstar is sadly a poor choice in terms of customer service, flights arriving/departing on schedule, ticket price, staff professionalism, dealing with customer issues, etc. I've flown Jetstar for many domestic flights and have had no issue with the majority of flights however when I've paid $800 to fly from Melb to Gold Coast and they want me to buy a cup of coffee onboard it seems unfair. This is just one example of the issues that have crept into the airline in recent times as competition has increased. For a current assessment of Jetstar please visit their Facebook page to assess whether customer service has improved. In my opinion it's worth paying a few extra dollars to fly Virgin or Qantas domestically, or check out Scoot, China Southern, Air Asia etc for cheaper LCC fares on international routes.
Where to begin? I regret booking three flights in advance. Otherwise, Quantas exceeds on all counts. Jetstar is an economy airline. I pack light, but they make everything difficult. Checking baggage weight at the boarding gate and very old tight seats. Worse is some of the staff like the heavy set woman and Cairns. She immediately had an attitude when I asked where I was sitting. Even though I purchased extra weight for carry on, it registered as check-in. When I asked if I could just carry on, she flatly refused and waited to charge me extra even though I was only carrying 16 KG when I I paid online for 25kg. Avoid the hassle unless you are small and carrying under 7 kg. Otherwise, the price will be comparable with Qantas even though they charge more upfront. They don't have all the limitations that Jetstar imposes. Avoid avoid and abort. read more
Duplicate review from 10/27/23. First of all, it was a whole experience getting here... My fault for not looking at my emails, etc. But why did I have to go to the international airport for a domestic flight...? Then a crooked taxi cab driver ripped us off driving from the domestic to international terminal because we did not have enough time to hop on the free shuttle. This happened to so many people we met at the Jetstar terminal. Quality/Quantity - Low cost carrier. And they are proud of it. Advertises it aggressively, part of their branding. For the people reading from the US - Think Frontier, Spirit low cost. If you know, you KNOW! On our flight back, our fault (not theirs), we went over the luggage weight of only 10kg (22 lbs). This applies to BOTH the carry on and backpack together, which I did not know. My two empty bags alone probably weighed 5kg... The penalty was $65AUD, probably more than the cost of our one way flight per person, LOL! Atmosphere - No thrills, no frills. As advertised, you get what you pay for. Service - Minimum service. Cut and pasted from their website (might be outdated...): Our 10-point Customer Guarantee This Jetstar Customer Guarantee applies to all flights operated by Jetstar Airways (JQ) and Jetstar Asia (3K) 1. Your safety is our highest priority. 2. We commit to provide the lowest fares with our 'Price Beat Guarantee'.* 3. Our team are always here to help, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 4. We'll let you know your choices if your flight is changed before you travel. 5. We'll keep you updated and provide options if things don't go to plan on the day. 6. You will get what you paid for. 7. We'll resolve issues quickly. 8. You can have confidence in how quickly we will refund your money. 9. We share your passion for protecting our environment. 10. We commit to the privacy of your personal information. Price - Inexpensive. Again, you get what you pay for. Owner Comment - Congrats on all your success. We will be better prepared if we ever use you again. read more

THESE guys are insane and unethical. I was delayed 2 hours for a BS reason and then get told on the flight I have a $10 voucher. I get a coffee and get a $5 change on me credit card, The most disgusting people inhale ever worth. My last flight with these ass clowns read more
They haven't even claimed their business on Yelp. You know why? Because they don't care. The employees are okay. But the business- the board of directors - has set up operations so that everyone is miserable. Jet star is yet another airline that has cut services, laid off employees in favor of digitization, and so on. They cancel flights, make you check yourself in, and ensure that every aircraft is loaded the gills. Cheers! read more
Seem to always be delayed at least on the three flights we've flown. They don't do baggage transfer if you have a connecting flight as we learned flying from Ayers Rock to Melbourne to Brisbane. So here we sat for an hour in Melbourne with our bags that we had to pick up from baggage claim because check in was 3 hrs prior...only to sit for another hour after getting our bag tags because bag drop is 2 hrs prior. They have a bar outside their check-in area I guess for this reason. The water bottle I filled at the Ayers Rock airport I had to dump to get through security again. The process seems less secure and more problematic with all the handling. read more

Absolutely horrible. Arrived Melbourne 8am, waited four hours to find out my 4pm flight to US was canceled. No Jetstar employee in sight. I had to figure out how to get back into domestic side of the airport from international side, transfer my flight (which didn't end up processing properly because of Jetstar) with barely any wifi which was a horrible mess. I was so sick of no one helping me I just bought a flight home on Qantas connecting me from Melbourne to Sydney then to Sydney to the US. What a complete mess. DO NOT FLY JETSTAR!!! people in the airport were telling me later this happens all the time just be lucky I didn't get stuck in Bali . Wow read more
Today my wife and daughter left Honolulu for Brisbane via Melbourne. After clearing customs and making it to the domestic terminal, my wife asked the ladies at the Jetstar ticket desk about the status of the flight to Brisbane, as I advised my wife I had received a text (in Honolulu) that their flight was delayed. Instead of providing any reasonable response, the lady (Raquel) said, "what? what? you can't read?" Is this really how Jetstar treats its customers? My wife asked her, "what's wrong" and then Raquel said, "if you don't walk away right now, I'll make sure you will not be able to board the flight to Brisbane" Wow. Apparently, a little power at the Jetstar desk in Melbourne is still able to corrupt absolutely. All three women at the Jetstar desk were laughing at my wife who is traveling with our 11 year old daughter. If you want the very worst Australia has to offer, head to the Jetstar ticket desk in Melbourne-- you won't be disappointed!!!! read more

JQ030 flight from BKK to MEL experience. Paid extra fee for the seat upgrade. That's pretty much it. They charge you for every freaking things on the plane. No complementary beverage service, entertainment, even a simple blanket. I fly a lot and this is the far worst flight experience I ever had. The crew lack common sense and human touch. They were just like a robot. They completely ignored rubbishy left on the floor for the 8+ hr flight. Unbelievable. Very disappointed. My first and last on Jetstar. read more

First and last time I'm ever booking with Jetstar. Haven't boarded yet and hating their service, attitude and ethic. 1.5kgs over their 7kg limit and slapped with a $50 fee - no problem. Stick to virgin, flights are $20 more and you never have an issue nor receive such a bad attitude. read more

As most people that fly with mountain bikes know they typically come in around 23kg if packed in a commercial bike bag. Most airlines have at least a 23kg weight allowance and typically don't apply any oversize changes to sporting goods. I have flown overseas and intestate with Qantas, Virgin, Air New Zealand and Air Canada with a bike bag weighing between 23 and 24kg when packed and never once had an issue having it checked as my included bag. It has always without exception been carried under the flight's standard included luggage allowance This all changed when I flew the first (and last time) with Jetstar (on the return leg of a qantas flight) Jetstar only allow 20kg (which if you use a good commercial bike bag and have mountain bike you're almost certainly not going to come in under) AND an oversize bag charge that isn't waived for sporting goods like most airlines. This charge along with their $15 PER Kg charge will add about $70 to your flight EACH WAY. They will not take into account that you flew out with their partner airline on the same booking with which can lead to some obvious confusion when you cant come back with the luggage you flew out with. To top it of once they know you're at your weight limit the smell blood and really go in for the kill to make an extra buck. On our return flight the resorted to the utterly stupid level of weighing the wallets/purses you're carrying on board (even if they are not going in the carry on). While I acknowledge the whole "we need to weigh your wallet and purse" thing was probably just got someone having a bad day at check in it does go to underline the clear culture if making money from baggage charges however possible that must permeate through the airlines culture. So if you're flying with a bike I'd strongly look at using an alternate airline read more
Flew jetstar Melbourne to Beiling return (stop over in Singapore). My friend had booked the tickets and only ordered the basic package (no food, not entertainment). 5 days before the flight I called up to add entertainment (only $24 return, per person and food $24 each with a sort drink or juice - a bit pricey for plane food!!). At the time of booking my bank was having problems. I was assured by the jetstar phone representitve it would eventually go through. The day before I flew I checked my credit card and nothing had appeared and I had not yet received an email confirming payment. Over four hours and five phone calls (each time waiting on hold for over half the conversation) I was told it had been approved and I'd receive an email conformation within 2 hours. This did happened but I was left amazed at how difficult it was to buy a product from a provider. Flight to Beiling went smooth. Once in Beijing I noticed I had been charged twice for the food/entertainment. I decided I'd wait until my return to fix the problem. When bording in Beiling for return flight we were told we couldn't as we still owed money. This was not true. I had a copy of the itinary saying "paid in full". After much confusment and frustration we were transferred to another desk (there were only airport workers and no jetstar staff). Again as the staff did not work for the company and English was limited it was difficult to find out the problem. We were told if we paid and extra $AUD230 we could get on the flight. However according to another person assisting this could not be done as we would need to pay in Aussie dollars (which we didn't have). The airport staff called jetstar and had to face long waiting times to be able talk to an operator. With mins to spare we were able to check on. No explanation no appology from jetstar as yet. Luckily we has our own head phones as they had run out, so for anyone wanting to buy the entertainment but didn't have their own wouldn't be able to. The frustration, humiliation, time wasted on this flight makes it clearly the worst flight experience I have ever had. I will NEVER fly jetstar again!,,,, read more

The worst f$$king airline ever! My flight got cancel from Sydney to Melbourne and also on the way back. From Melbourne to Sydney. My flight was supposed to be at 09:25. She could not get me a flight until 18:15. I was at the airport since 7 this morning. There is almost 10 flight that fly in and out from here to Sydney. I try to go wait, to see if they can get me on the earlier flight. They keep telling me is full, without out looking at their computer. They all basically tell me to wait for my flight at 18:15. And one more thing. What the f$$king is this? Weighting your backpack and most of your carry on before the flight. I want to give them a zero star. I would not definitely flying with them ever again. read more

I flew Jetstar from Cairns to Melbourne and although the flight experience was not horrible, the whole situation just seemed incredibly unprofessional and "meh, I've experienced better". First of all, the flight attendants were reallllly unprofessional. They always seemed a bit flustered and out of breath while walking around and one flight attendant even apologised to a passenger because he wants to take up a slot in the overhead compartments, which he went back and forth to check. Shouldn't flight attendants have their own compartments? Oh well... And the worst part of all... no free food :( Jetstar isn't a horrible option. It's a slightly cheaper option in comparison to Qantas. However, the unfortunate part is that you can tell it is cheaper, even without looking at the bill. My recommendation? Fly Qantas for long flights, just so you can have some level of comfort. read more

Wish I could give this a -10 star rating. First off, my suitcase was 1kg over. A staff member walked by and I asked them if I would have an additional charge for same, and they stated "No, how would you be charged, it is already checked". Then the automatic conveyor belt would not accept my bag. We got help for that, but then the tag for our second bag would not print. We tried all options on the kiosk, then asked a staff member walking by to help us. They told us to do exactly what we had been trying to do for the past 5 minutes. After trying to help us, they told us that we were only allowed to have 25kg for the the whole flight?!?!?! Is this an actual joke? 25kg for 2 people going on a flight? We were told that we could purchase another 15kg at a base rate of $45 then every kilogram over costed $15! How do you not get upset when this airline is royally screwing you over? Especially considering that the flight wasn't even full, you would think they would charge you a base rate for another checked bag. The staff from this point on were terrible. Considering that travelling is already a stressful time, they had zero compassion and did not allow us any time to transfer items from our checked baggage into our carry ons to try and lower our additional $180. On top of that, we had to pay for the extra kilogram from the one checked bag we were allowed to have, after we were told we wouldn't have to. To top things off, the flight attendants were extremely rude to us, didn't offer us food or drink when they were serving on our three hour flight, and instead glared at us on the way by. Overall, WORST experience I've ever had with an airline. Low fares everyday? They make that possible by charging you ridiculous rates for baggage and not providing complimentary drinks or snacks. All the while having rude staff members at the face of their business. They have also been cancelling many flights making travel even more stressful than it already is. My advice would be to pay the extra dollars to get a better travel experience and avoid this airline at all costs. read more
My number one recommended airline service to fly when traveling in Australia. I have flown Jetstar from Melbourne to Sydney, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Cairns, Adelaide, and even to Bangkok. Though they offer cheap deals on flights, they overcharge you and in my opinion take advantage of the traveler with their outrageous baggage fees. Never have I ever tried to cheat the system more than with this company. Time and time again I will attempt to bring my backpack that usually ways about 7kg along with my overnighter le sport sac shoulder bag which usually adds to the same. Sometimes it work's and they don't even question me but it is risky. To talk about one flight in particular when flying within Australia - I was flying from Melbourne to Brisbane. Once I got to the gate, they took my overnighter that had been okay'ed to join me on the plane by the gate and charged me 80 dollars at the gate to put it underneath with the rest of the luggage. I responded to this with a lash out on twitter that didn't end with a positive outcome, I highly recommend not following my lead. One of the best thing's about this airline is there weekly deals called the Friday Frenzy. In addition to this, they celebrate tons of 'holiday' deals I was lucky enough to book my flight to Bangkok only a week before my trip for under a grand. Usually you can find a flight return from Melbourne to Thailand at around 600 but like I said, I did this all last minute. In the end I was able to get a 600 dollar business class seat on the way there with a 400 dollar starter fair on the way back. The luxurious business class was amazing but nothing compared to the three seats I got to myself on the way home, super spacey. The cabin was filled with maybe 50 people tops on a huge aircraft. Check the site now if you want to fly a friend for free later this year! read more

1+ hours late taking off for 2 hour flight. Suggest you fix airplane before you let people sit on it with nothing to do but miss their connections. You need a better reporting system, as for 20+ minutes we have been waiting not for the plane to be fixed but for the engineer to fill in paperwork!!! Join us in the 21st century please. read more
I have never had great experiences with Jetstar. I know that they are a budget airline, but there is budget airlines and then there is Jetstar. I have never flown on a Jetstar flight that has gone out on time - and I have always been treated as if I am trying to trick the system from the staff. On my last trip with them I found it really difficult to work out how much baggage I was allowed... The website said 17kgs, the ticket said 15kgs - and then after I had arrived at the terminal - taken some luggage out of my checked baggage to "create" carry on and taken my bag to the counter - at the counter the sign said 23kgs. GET IT STRAIGHT JETSTAR!!! The time before last I had staff at the gate, getting quite agressive with customers as to what they could take on as carryon luggage - and telling them that they had to speak to cusotmer service to have the bags checked and be taken on a later flight - because they had too much for carryon. Could this not have been checked at the check - in desk if they were going to be so strict?? I have had several friends who have had horror stories with Jetstar - but I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt (and the last time we flew - I didnt book the flights) But from now on, I will NEVER fly Jetstar - unless they are an absolute last resort!! read more

Flew Jetstar yesterday round trip Melbourne-Sydney. Started on flight 531, and this is a special shout out to "Jessie Lee"!!! Very unprofessional stewardess, rude, demanding, just not a nice person. Then she wanted to charge me $3.50 for my coke, which I had prepaid with a voucher for $5. I refused to pay $3.50 for a coca-cola (are you friggin' nuts!!!) A few minutes later, she realized I did indeed have a voucher, (oh, so sorry, would you like that Coke now?). My response was a firm NO! I don't trust you, period. A really shitty flight crew! One more thing, Jetstar. In case you haven't noticed, it has clearly been determined that on-board electronics do not interfere with aircraft activities when in the non-transmit mode, so join the rest of the world and grow up! You guys are like Mafia police on this, get it straight! Just plain dumb rules, You get what you pay for, and in this case, that is not much! read more

Jetstar. Our first and last experience. Our flight was cancelled . Directed to get our checked luggage of the carousel and go to the very long customer service line, with the other zillion folks. Happy to fly Qantas instead at Jetstar's expense. Save yourself headaches & avoid Jetstar. And remember that USA's Southwest Airlines is THE BEST role model for domestic flights! read more

Excellent Customer Service I have just checked in so am not reviewing any flights yet! BUT having read lots of reviews about Jetstar I was nervous and not very hopeful, that I could get a refund on my $53 spend on city shuttle I no longer needed. Honestly, On the phone Hannah (login: ph210h) was great, clean , concise and arranged my refund there and then. She was olite (I could tell she was busy) but she was extremely professional. Granted I am yet to recieve the money but thats not the point! So often with reviews they are always do doom and gloom - defnitely had me scared! So this one is a big thank you to the Hannah at the Melbourne office! read more

Talk about no frills. If you bring a container you can ask a flight attendant for some water. Other than that all food, snacks, and beverages must be purchased with a card. Along with my ticket I purchased the entertainment package for $9. It didn't work, so a flight attendant helped me out and reset it an hour and a half in. What I like about Jetstar is that it's the only place where you can book a 1 way flight from Australia to America (Honolulu) for half the price of return. Other airlines out of Australia charge close to the same price for 1 way as return. My advice is to bring a lot of food (which I did) and a container for water. Your carry on can only be 7kg, and they charge a lot for luggage. If you're a minimalist carry on traveler though, you can't complain about Jetstar's prices. read more

This is just a terrible airline! I booked certain trips with this airline as a package, then changed for a direct flight with them later. Instead of refunding money when I took a direct flight (which they said was about $150.00 cheaper), they acted like they were doing me a favor by allowing the change that they were making money off of. While I did not expect much in a short flight from Sydney to Melbourne, I flew from Melbourne to Honolulu - which amounted to a terrible flight. I can accept the cramped quarters - but people right next to me were getting dinners served, and never even knew that I could have booked it as part of the flight. I was never given that option - either when I booked it, or even when I changed to the direct flight (as I described above). They charge you for everything but water - including peanuts - and, of course, I would rather cut off my right arm and beat myself over the head with it then pay for peanuts. I have heard that the owner of Jetstar - the same owner as Qantas (otherwise referred to as "the Irishman") is real cheap, and is in serious labor disputes with employees. It seems he treats his customers the same! I strongly recommend that you try to avoid this airline in anyway you can! read more

Hi, 1st Incident- At Melbourne Tullamarine Jet Star Ground Floor staff Thought of writing this to inform Jetstar Management as we have experienced a very rude service specially from Melbourne Tullamarine & Japan Int Airport Jet Star Ground floor staff. As there are not service counters at Melbourne Tullamarine Jet Star , we have entered to the Jet Star self-service section on the 16th Nov 2015 around 9pm and the place was similar to our local village fish market. Looking at all people who are travelling with Jetstar at that night was seems they are fully stressed, tired and annoyed to the maximum with the worst or no pleasant service at all with the ground floor staff. People having lot of issues trying to do self-service with your machines.. Even though no service counters about 8-10 ground staff members juggling through the crowd.. very unpleasant scene. We too did self-service from machines after waiting some time there in a big line but failing as we all (5 of us) getting rejection receipts saying contact staff for assistance. We are travelling to Japan with 6 month old infant, 3year old boy as well.. We have tried calling a ground floor staff for number of times for assistance but no one at least looked at us. Finally I, myself called one of your ground floor staff lady after standing there nearly 10 -15 minutes and the response she gave me was unbelievable as she shouted badly at me in front of all the people at that time.. I was politely called her after she served & finished with another customer. She was very rude and her reactions made me so nervous and stressed as she looked at me like I am her enemy at boxing or wrestling ring. She yelled at me saying can't you see I am servicing to a customer.. but clearly everybody witnessed the person she talked was leaving away from her.. I was patiently waited there otherwise this would have ended up in calling security or police & we couldn't make our holiday to Japan.. I got her name as her name badge on her uniform called "Minae". She was pulled my passport and worked and issued my ticket and bag tag but refused to do my other family members requests and went away saying she got some other work and another staff member will do that. We were helpless, waited and another staff officer attended to the rest. My request to Jetstar is please inquire this unpleasant situation and also in future make sure to deliver a great customer service to your customers. Even before make a start to our holiday we got full of stress and anxiety from this type of bad service. 2nd Incident- At Japan Int Air Port (Departure) Jet Star Ground Floor Staff We have come to the Japan Int departure Jet Star Counters (Not Self Service Machines). I have 20 KG check in baggage and 7 kg Carry on allowance. I didn't carry a carry-on baggage.. I went to the counter and gave my check in baggage to weigh and it got 23KG.. She said take out 3kg out from baggage, so I said to that lady that I don't have carry-on baggage and that's why I put extra 3kg in it. Also we have called Jetstar before about the baggage weight and they have informed us if we don't take carry-on we can share some weight in out check-in baggage. But she didn't admit and rejected my request and I had to take my check in baggage out, opened all pad locks and took 3kg out to my hand after going away from the long queue lined up for the counters. I was in a rush and stressed on this and took some of my stuff out from the check in baggage without checking to my hand bag which resulted later at the screen checking the Japan Custom officers took out my expensive skincare products to their custody. This was another disappointment and also we as a family travelling with kids and infants in Jetstar doing this to us made us so distressed and angry. We are thoroughly disappointed on Jetstar Ground floor service and they made our holiday worst not once but twice and thrice or so.. 3rd Incident- In side Jet Star Flight Also When travelling to Japan I have requested a close seat from Jetstar Flight attendant to my other family members which there were vacant seats available. But they refused to give me as well... Considering all of the above I don't have any interest or any pleasant experience to travel with Jetstar again.. read more

Beware bait-and-switch: anybody looking to use this budget airline beware the typical tricks - their website can sometimes be very slow, and unlike the non-budget airlines, once the site actually wakes up again and "remembers" your query, the details sometimes differ ever-so-slightly with your original search (changing the return date is a typical one). If you fail to pick this up, they will charge you once for the booking and charge again for the change, and dole out blank looks when you ask for this system "error" to be repaired. Even the service provider's attitude is one of "caveat emptor". read more

Ballina-Melbourne on A320. Paid about $100 or so for a one way ticket which I purchased on Qantas' website . Baggage allowance was 20kg and there was no detail on the Qantas website about incremental charges for excess baggage. Travelled with two bags which totaled 35 kg - ie - 15 kg over the allowance and the equivalent of a second bag. Jetstar charged me $300 for the excess luggage which was three times the price of the ticket and about ten times the price of what most global airlines charge for a second bag. Qantas should be reprimanded for selling Jetstar tickets and not informing customers about these usurious charges and Jetstar should be faulted for outright price gouging which doesn't remotely reflect the incremental cost of carrying the bag. Qantas customer service people in Melbourne washed their hands of the problem saying it is a Jetstar issue (even though Jetstar is owned by Qantas and the ticket was bought on the Qantas website). Jetstar employess in Melbourne were unsympathetic, said I should've known, read the policies, etc. One even suggested they should be charging more and didn't think $500-1000 was out of line. This airline is completely out of control and I vow never to reward either company with my business again. read more
