Rabble's philosophy is that exercise should be fun, so their…read moregames are throwbacks to childhood and the playground (British Bulldogs, Dodgeball, all variations of Tag, Frisbee, Robin Hood, Zombie Hunt) and the equipment involves bouncy balls, Nerf guns, foam javelins, and (at one point) and inflatable banana. I once tracked a game with GPS and ran 5k within one session. They're reasonably priced - I've bought two £50 packages, each of which covers 10 games to be used anytime - and switch between North, South, and City; once a month is an epic North vs South playoff. Before you think this is like BMF but with "childish" games, come check out a session. Everyone enjoys themselves all the time. (Compare the smiling faces of Rabblers to the scowls of any other fitness group.) Charlotte & Rosemary, who run the sessions, are encouraging and playful themselves and never want anyone to have a bad time; there are no sore losers in Rabble! It's just the right amount of competitive for those who can't dedicate so much time and energy to playing an amateur sport, and while you'll be missed if you don't show up, the team won't lose because you're not there as teams are semi-randomly assigned at the start of each session. The question remains: do you run faster when you're chasing or being chased?? Either way, I've definitely improved my fitness over the past year with this gang and had a blast to boot. All sessions end with a trip to the pub for drinks (weeknights) or lunch (weekends). It's a great crowd!

Rabble makes me sad that I don't live in London right now…read more Rabble is absolutely great, the team are fantastic, and it's just so easy to meet people and enjoy exercise. There are a lot of throwbacks to your time on the playground, and it actually is super fun- when I first went it wasn't when I was converted to gym-bunniness either. It's outdoors, so it's as fresh as you can get for London, and gosh does it make you competitive! I don't know if it's because it's team games where you're against others, or because you refuse to be out of breath and lose at a game in your twenties that you won so much in first school, but it works! Make sure you take enough water, especially if it's hot.

This is a wonderfully old-school and sophisicated London members club - perfect for a game of lawn…read moretennis or just hanging out drinking tea and reading a book in one of the beautiful conservatories or on the terrace (I did the latter!) You can only get in here with a member - and most people are either married into or born into membership at Hurlingham because the wait is around 15 years - but luckily members can bring a bunch of people at a time. The grounds are gorgeous and with a perfect weather weekend you can spend hours wandering around and taking in the beautiful scenery. If you decide to opt for a membership, by the time your name is at the top of the list 15 or so years down the track, you may just be about nearing the right age to fit in with the clientele here. Yes, I'm talking OAPs. This club is a million miles away from the media crowd you find in most well known members club, this really is a place for the old-school English gentleman in his suit - which gives it a special vibe. Oh and don't forget your crisp whites on the tennis courts, no other gear allowed here!

This private club is a wonderful sanctuary in the middle of busy London…read more Its grounds are simply divine and the view onto the Thames is really gorgeous. You feel like you've stepped into some alternate universe where everyone is friendly and nice. There's a great playground for children, an outdoor swimming pool and jacuzzi i think, tennis courts, croquet lawns etc. There are the usual rules regarding wearing only white. The restaurant is also quite yummy though I wouldn't say it's mind-blowing. The BBQ in the summer is delicious though! Obviously the down-sides are that it's ridiculously expensive to become a member and the waiting list is close to almost a century.

I trained at Moreno Boxing for a few months towards the end of 2020 and really enjoyed the classes…read moreand found the trainers to be excellent. Unfortunately I will not be returning as their customer service is awful. As many of the other reviews mentioned they will not refund you under any circumstances and are not reasonable or trustworthy. The owners main concern is around making money and not the happiness or wellbeing of their clients. I last attended a class in November of 2020 where I dislocated my shoulder and was unable to train in the following months. Despite not attending a single session after this they charged me for the next month which I disputed. They refused a refund but offered credit. They then charged me for the following month which they eventually they did refund after a lengthy dispute. 8 months later they charged me a monthly membership fee again (£95). They claim my contract had been on hold and has since re-commenced despite having no correspondence of this. They refused to offer me a refund. I had logged in via their booking system many months ago to try to cancel my account with them. I couldn't see an option to do so, instead I requested that the system remove my details. The fact I was then charged again indicates a GDPR breach. On another note throughout Covid they pushed the rules consistently so I was not comfortable to attend the gym during certain periods. This is probably because the gym owner is a Covid conspiracy theorist.

I've been doing martial arts for years, but wanted to check out a boxing class. It seemed to me…read morethat it might be a more practical form of self-defence, and that the sparring might be more realistic than other martial arts. From the very first class I took with Carlos, he was extremely welcoming. There's no pretension, ego or hostility in his classes - not from instructors or students. As I started attending more regularly (I do conditioning/pad work once a week and the sparring class every Friday night), I realised just how committed and talented Carlos is not just at boxing, but teaching it. Teaching is an entirely separate skill to being able to box, but it's clearly something Carlos has worked on and can deliver extremely effectively. He has the mark of someone who has put in his 10,000 hours to be a great trainer. In just a few seconds of pad work or him watching you spar, he'll spot your mistakes, stop you, and make you fix them before continuing. Every time you reach a new level, he'll give you more feedback to get to the next one. I learn more every Friday at sparring than I learn most weeks at work and in other areas of my life. Initially, I was reluctant to attend the Friday sparring classes, as it meant giving up my nights out drinking and socialising, but after trying it just once, I realised that coming home, sweaty and drained from sparring but with a head full of learnings, was far more enjoyable than waking up with a hangover and nothing to show for it the next day. I cannot recommend Moreno boxing enough if you have even a slight vestige of interest in the martial arts. Check out a class and see if it's for you.

This place is so much more than a tennis club; it's my second home. Tennis clubs and I have known…read morea few can be elitist, cold places, full of cliques and rules. Take Hurlingham, where if you're not wearing 87% white, some haughty octogenarian will shuffle over and delight in ticking you off. And where despite the fact they boast dozens of often deserted, pristine courts, you can't book for more than an hour. And don't get me onto the 10-year waiting list. HPLTC is infinitely friendlier with far more sensible rules. What makes it special is the fact it's small enough to encourage a community feel, but not so small as to feel claustrophobic. The grounds are also wonderful. If you don't have any outdoor space at home as I don't you can while away summer days with a few sets on grass courts, before collapsing with a newspaper and Pimms in a deckchair on their generous lawn. The club, tucked away in Holland Park, has a unique atmosphere and is the type of place where you can turn up alone and find someone to chat to and probably play with. There's a club night on Wednesday with a dinner afterwards, a singles league, tournaments, barbecues in the summer and a dedicated core of regulars. Really, if you're tennis-mad, as I am, there's no better place to be on a sunny day...and no better tennis club in London.
