Bella Vintage - Vintage necklace! (with cat help)

Lured by the siren song of chairs, I wandered into this adorable store. It's wonderful. While it…read morelooks small from the outside, there is a large back/side room, and there is furniture! The aesthetic is that glowing, comfortable, homey feel of the "childhood" scenes in the new Little Women movie -- not the specific period (though I saw Eastlake dining chairs), but the sense of buying a classic piece that was part of a home and now it's going to be part of your home. It's all delightfully non-snooty, and the housewares aren't the same ones that show up in every antique mall. I ended up buying a necklace and am clutching the business card for the day when I buy a larger place.

Vintage, Retro. Antique ... all those things describe Bella Vintage, although vintage is probably a…read moremore accurate description. It's not a dusty, musty shop of goods that look as though they were dragged out of the garage or attic and nothing here appears to be a modern take on an antique. Things are old, but necessarily antique. So vintage it is, I guess There's a gift shop feel. The lighting is soft, and colors muted. Spread out amongst three rooms is about anything - from teapots, cookie jars, kitchen items and a great deal of miscellany -- to add an interesting accent to a room or a collection. Each room has an overall theme of a sort. One room seems to focus on kitchen, another on study or bedroom, and the main room has day to day items of home décor. Browsing is easy -- the aisles are wide enough to turn around without knocking something over, the placement of items keeps your eye moving. Unless searching for something specific -- and I'd recommend asking the owner, who apparently knows every item in the place -- spend time browsing. It might be a trip down memory lane for you, your parents, or even your grandparents.

My husband and I were on our way through Suffield when a little sign by the road grabbed our…read moreattention: Women's Tops Half-Off. Just kidding. Woulda been funny. But seriously, the sign did say 50% off women's tops, and I'd never been to that particular shop, so ya know how that goes--I made hubby pull a u-turn and we went in. It's a small place, but neat and clean. It felt more like a boutique than a secondhand store (it does call itself a "thrift boutique," so that's pretty apt a description). Everything is organized, and they've got a little bit of everything, including a small back room with decor items and housewares. Prices seemed reasonable. I picked up a pretty scarf for $4 and a leopard print tote for $3, both in excellent condition. This is a place to come in, poke around, and find some treasures to add to your wardrobe. So glad we stopped by!

"We'll drive for the line Now there's nothing to be lost…read moreYou and I will cross over With no second thoughts" (Tom Petty) This is the third of the Second Chance Shops I've visited, after previous trips to their Simsbury and Glastonbury locations. I always take a look at the men's shirts first. I was very surprised to see them tagged at $12 here, which is substantially more than I customarily see at the Simsbury store, where I've picked up quite a few similar long sleeve Oxford shirts for $5. Otherwise, the store is very neat and organized and has the usual accompaniment of clothing, footwear, accessories, household goods, books, etc. I'm definitely a fan of thrift and second hand stores, and even though I was looking for a long sleeve white shirt, I walked out empty-handed today.
