The other barber tried to argue that it was the kid (who showed a picture of what he wanted) that couldn't communicate clearly. This and the fact that they leave a small "cash only" sign up at the register that you wouldnt be able to see until it's time to pay left a terrible taste in my mouth.

Found this place on a recommendation from Reddit, looked into the reviews and gave it a shot. Scheduled a haircut with Stacey, who is the owner of the shop, through their online booking portal. As soon as I came in, I was greeted with a professional handshake, and a sit down for shampoo and conditioner. I showed her a picture of the length I wanted, and she exceeded my expectations. Even did some light layering on the back (whatever that means). It ended with a hot face towel and a light massage on my shoulders and neck, cleanup around the sideburns and back neck. All for $35. Unreal. What a steal and I will not be going anywhere else. Highly recommend. Finally, a salon dedicated to men.

His chair was closest to Laurel Ave. He literally PUSHED my wife out of the way as he cut my hair at a ragingly rapid pace and paid no attention to my wife's request. Totally did what HE wanted not what WE wanted. Then today on a whim I stopped back and had Tom cut my hair. He was a younger man in his late 20's. I told his specifically what I wanted and he went to work. He took his time and did a great job. and got rave reviews from myself and my wife who is trying to let my hair grow out to a certain style. He took his time and even shaved the back of my neck which no one there had ever done. I tipped him heavily because he did a great job and was responsive to our needs for how I wanted my hair cut. If Empire keeps him I will be returning. He works on Wednesdays. He is friendly and engaging while he cuts and maybe it takes him a bit longer than the others who do what THEY want. If all the barbers there worked like Tom did, I would rate the place 5 stars. He single handedly redeemed Empire for me and if he stays there I will be a repeat customer.
