This was our second attempt to experience this restaurant. This seems to be a locals favorite. Our first time here was 3 years ago but we didn't stay because we were not treated very well by the hostess and we didn't have a reservation so we left. Let's just say we didn't feel welcomed. Fast forward 3 years and this time I made a reservation which we were promptly asked if we had one at 6:15 on a Friday night in an empty restaurant. The restaurant is very nice inside with an open kitchen and the smells were enticing. It smelled amazing in there and the wood fire oven was blazing! 1st impressions were good so far. The staff were very, in a word, stiff. None of them seemed brave enough to look like they were having fun working there. No warmth although the lady who took our order was pretty nice but again, not warm and not inviting. Very regimented. It was like pulling teeth trying to get a recommendation out of her. I almost felt like I was offending her by asking because evidently "everything was good" but the dishes are all different sooooo. Not helpful but evidently in a hurry. Hello! First timers!? We started with the Caesar salad. It was light and delicious. There were 2 small pieces of white anchovy which I really loved! I wanted more anchovies. Next we got what we THOUGHT was focaccia bread. This was absolutely NOT focaccia unless there was a hidden meaning in the description that we missed. This was wood fired pizza dough with some oil and a hint of garlic and some parm. I didn't intend to order plain pizza dough but again I must have misread the menu. Clearly said focaccia. My entree was Porchetta. It was a beautiful plate with really nicely roasted potatoes and veggies. The sides were excellent! The Porchetta was so incredibly greasy and had zero crisp to the skin. I love pork belly but there was wayyyy too much collagen going on. It was just slimy. I really tried to find a good bite but the fat coated my teeth and stayed there til I left. Incredibly disappointed. The flavor was nice but I couldn't get past the collagen. Then there was my wife's dish, the Amatriciana pasta. The pasta was waaayyy undercooked and swimming in oil. There was a pool of olive oil at the bottom of that bowl. I told my wife to dip her plain pizza dough in there. The sauce was supposed to have a little spice from the menu description but all we tasted was olive oil and literally no other flavor. My wife ate none of it and was so disappointed. There were many awards in the restaurant and maybe we just don't know if this is what authentic Italian food is supposed to taste like, but this place wasn't for us. We eat out a lot. We never complain IN restaurants when they have one shot to wow us. To the reader, don't hesitate to give this place a shot. It's popular and has been around this long for a reason. I have been visiting this restaurant for many years and have never had a bad experience. We have had celebration dinners, date nights, to girls nights here. The food is always amazing! I have been all throughout Italy multiple times and this place is the closest to Italy I have found! Very Authentic! Most if not all ingredients imported straight from Italy or made fresh from scratch. That being said, do NOT expect the classic "American Italian" you might be used too. American Italian being where things are made ahead of time, refrigerated sometimes frozen, and popped into an oven when ordered while also distracting you of the bad quality food with endless garlic rolls. Not gonna name names of establishments that do that buuuut you catch my drift. YOU WILL NOT FIND THAT HERE. Here, things are made fresh with ingredients from Italy. Chef makes his own pastas, cheeses, etc. daily. Everything is made to order so things take time. Just like in Italy! What an awful experience. My one star isn't about the food. The fact is that I left after 1.5 hours with no trace of my food in sight. The wait staff, not everyone, but the one in the wheelchair - I have never seen a food service employee so rude. She is most definitely in the wrong line of work. We had a table of 8. We were ignored. We had to find a waitress to even get a coke. One of our party had to go find silverware from another table. Oh, and the waitress in the wheelchair? Great looking comfortable atmosphere. Place was not that crowded took a solid 5 minutes for server to reach us. Once ordered dishes came out pretty quick. Server stop by once and asked how everything was. I asked if my wanted salt to season hers up a little bit. She declined and the waitress moved on. If I was the server my thoughts would have been to ask if something was wrong. Two pasta dishes which one was a flavor bomb and the other tasted like nothing but wet pasta even with the fresh ricotta and sauce they used. Wife had a couple bites and that was it. Never had anyone comeback to our table ever. After I finished, we waited another 15 minutes for someone to come by so we could pay. Went and found someone who seemed to be put off that I asked. She came by and dropped it off without saying anything to us. My wife did thank her also with no acknowledgement. This is my experience and opinion, please make your own. read more

The environment was calm and welcoming. We did seem to overwhelm the server a bit when asking for recommendations from the menu, the answers were pretty short and quiet. The servers were very attentive and kind overall tho. My wife had the featured pizza that evening, we did not watch the name but it was delicious. I gave the Porchetta a shot, first time trying it. It was seasoned really well but I don't think I knew what I was getting into with the fat to meat ratio in pork belly because it was too much after a couple bites. But if you are a fan of pork belly I would recommend the dish. Overall we enjoyed our evening and will return for more. read more

This restaurant has been on our to go to list for quite some time. Today was finally the day! When we first walked in nobody was working the front. After a quick wait, the head chef sat us at the table. We started with the cheese plate sampler. It was pretty good. I definitely liked one of the three more than the others. A suggestion would be to give a little more of the sides/sauce that they pair with it. There was not enough of the tomato and caper mix which was really good. The Caesar salad was solid. It had a tangy dressing and a really good cheese amount that tasted salty and creamy. Yum! My pizza was was delicious. I wish there was a little more sauce in it. I had also hoped for some red pepper flakes but the server was really busy and didn't get back with us until towards the end. She was friendly and efficient but the only one on the floor. This place is one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever been too. Unfortunately, I didn't think of YELP until dessert, so sorry for no pictures! I rarely if ever venture out for Italian food, because being Italian, and being a chef myself, most of the "Italian" restaurants outside of "Big cities" like Chicago, NY, NJ, San Francisco, New Orleans, LOs Angels, etc., are very "Americanized" and frankly crappy. But once in awhile you find a true gem like this. I will tell you...if you want the real deal...run don't walk, and come check this place out!!! Dinner was AMAZING!!! We ate everything on our plates. The cheese platter with fresh mozzarella (4 assortments). This delicious soup with spinach and wild mushrooms alone will bring us back. He got the feature calzone with house made ricotta, cured meats, onions and wild mushrooms. I got the Gorgonzola Gnocchi which was creamy and rich. We ended with the Tiramisu Gelato. The service was perfect for those not looking to rush through a nice dinner. The staff was a team and helped each other throughout the dinning room and kitchen. We are looking forward to returning soon. You really can't beat the prices too. I really loved that it wasn't a large dining room. Worst dinner experience ever! 86.00 for a 45 minute wait on entrees. 1 pasta was under 1 was over, pizza cut like a 3 year old did it. Was told by the manager who was my server it was my responsibility to tell him when I wanted my entree brought out. We started off with their delicious garlic & oil focaccia bread that came straight out of the wood burning pizza oven. We had 12 people. Server was nice, but only asked half the table if they wanted anything besides water to drink. She missed out on upping some checks. Atmosphere was perfect to have good conversation. No loud bar or music. Perfect for date night. I had the Buttini with homemade sausage & mushrooms. For the folks who complain about the pasta being under cooked NO it's cooked Al Dente like real Italians cook their pasta. We over cook our pasta in the US and it's mushy. It was tasty but not enough mushrooms sadly but filling for the serving size. We were offered a dessert choice and I chose the vanilla gelato with shaved chocolate. Don't bother. It was in the freezer too long. Not soft and creamy. Ice had formed on it and it was hard. You barely could taste that it was vanilla and had one small sliver of chocolate. Waste of money. Should have gotten the Carmel cake. Overall everyone ate their whole meal even though it was slow coming out that gave us time to chat and relax. I'd go back for sure. We just had another fabulous Italian dinner. We love this place. I had the swordfish with roasted potatoes and veggies. Flavor was on point. The fish had the most delicious crispy edge. There was a delightful citrus bite with each mouthful. Hubby had the seafood medley with linguine and white wine sauce. He loves it. We had the sausage appetizer and it is definitely made by a man with muscles. The whole ambience is romantic and lovely. I am so excited. This has been my go-to place for my birthday for two years. My husband and I love the antipasto platter. It has a great, fresh selection of meats, cheeses, olives, and a sweet apricot spread. This is our absolute favorite dish in Atlanta. I had the hand rolled gnocchi and it's was delicious. It was served with spinach in a light cream sauce. The gnocchi was tender and tasty and the cream sauce was luxurious and balanced (not heavy or cheesy). My husband and I love this place because the menu reflects what the chef wants to serve his guests - and we are excited to eat a meal that is prepared with that kind of thought and care. You will not find typical American Italian dishes on the menu, but dishes that are traditionally found in northern Italy. We noticed that there is no salt and pepper on the table and we guess that is because the dish is served as it should be eaten. My wife and I have eaten at this restaurant many times. We will never return. At our last visit, we expressed our discontent with a pasta entree as it was very watery, as though the pasta had yet to be drained. The owner "Chef" Bologna was quick to remove our entrees and express his frustration. "Chef" blamed it on his new kitchen staff (his issues, not ours). He did not charge us for our food after he quickly removed our entrees post-complaint. We left a $20 tip for the waitress for her service. Hubby and I had a wonderful first visit to Vingenzo's. We ordered the Quattro 4-cheese pizza and the $10 spicy sausage appetizer. After slicing the sausage and putting it on the pizza, we enjoyed a flavorful, shared meal. We followed that up with their delectable ricotta torte. We almost passed on this place after reading some of the negative reviews - so glad that we gave it a try. The restaurant is clean and the staff is attentive and on point. Sunday dinner. Not super crowded, we had a 6:30 reservation and when we arrived the restaurant was nearly empty, maybe due to being a school night. We were seated right away and it did fill up as the night went on. Onto the meal: While they have a full bar, only a wine menu provided, no house cocktails here it seems. Which makes sense considering what I experienced. I'm not a big wine drinker so I ordered what should be a safe stand by, an Old Fashioned. It's an incredibly simple drink, and yet, I received one of the worst ones I've ever had. It wasn't served on the rocks, it was shaken instead of being stirred making it weak, and there was basically no bourbon flavor, nor sweetness from simple syrup or sugar. In fact, I'm pretty sure I got a shaken Manhattan, because it tasted like there was vermouth in it. Frankly, it was not good, at all, and kind of set my experience off in the wrong direction. It's the simplest cocktail to make ffs, bourbon, bitters, and sugar! Anyways, we got the antipasti rustico to start. It was a good selection (salamis, mortadella, cheese, orange honey, grapes, olives, and nuts), but one of our party realized they don't like olives (they had only had the black olives from pizza) so if we came back, we would try the grandioso tasting or maybe a pizza to share. For mains we got the bucatini sausage & mushrooms, linguini frutti di mar, fettuccini pomodoro & ricotta with sausage, and the seasonal fish, which was a pumpkin swordfish. Everyone who got pasta enjoyed it. The portions were not huge, but this was expected. Same for the swordfish, the fish portion was a good size but the sides were pretty minimal which was a bit disappointing; additionally it was swimming in oil, everything on the plate was drenched. It tasted good and was seasoned well at least. The pasta was truly fantastic though. Clearly fresh made, sauces were perfectly balanced, and just all around delicious. For desert, we got the coffee cream bread pudding, tiramisu, and a scoop of amaretto cherry gelato. The tiramisu was good, very well presented, but I prefer thicker ladyfingers. The bread pudding was also good, but had no coffee cream taste. The gelato just tasted like vanilla, no amaretto flavor really, but was good. Service was excellent though and their wine recommendation paired well with our meal. Minus two stars for the old fashioned. Maybe harsh, maybe my fault for ordering it at an Italian restaurant, but it was an incredible disappointment. Plus one for service and the quality of the pasta. Really stellar on both ends. Minus one for the desert disappointments and cost : value ratio. Overall, not a great deal. I would not return to Woodstock for this and would rather go to Fusco's in Acworth. read more

It had been a long time since we'd been here but we had always had good experiences. Now I find I am agreeing with reviewers who found service unsmiling and prices out of line. The food remains good, but no slice of cake is worth $12. Wine pours are minuscule. Our main server was good, but the male and others were dour and unfriendly. Please don't lose sight of the fact that dining out is discretionary, and inflation is pricing more and more diners back into their home kitchens. The times have been hard on everyone - a great restaurant is a welcome haven. If we are going to be rushed to order drinks 5 secs after we are seated, and treated like intruders or annoyances, back to my own kitchen it is. Life is hard, and no doubt some diners are uncivilized. But there are some professions where the show must go on - always with a SMILE. We pay for good food, but a social, warm and welcoming experience is a large part of the experience of dining out. My rule is - we adore the restaurant, and the restaurant adores us. We admire your expertise and are truly grateful civilized experiences and food still exist! In turn, be grateful for your customers. Without us your profession will cease to exist. Vingenzo's is an Italian restaurant located in downtown Woodstock that specializes in authentic Neapolitan cuisine. It's one of many interesting local businesses in the Main Street Woodstock community. The restaurant is classy enough for a nice date, but not so stuffy that you can't casually stop by with friends for pizza. The setting most reminds me of Atlanta's Double Zero Napoletana, albeit on a smaller scale, with it's elegant, rustic look, open kitchen, and showcase wood-burning oven. Chopped wood is used as decor near the restaurant entrance. Pizzas are baked in the oven similar to other local Neapolitan pizza restaurants such as Antico, STG Trattoria, and the temporarily closed Fuoco di Napoli. The food menu boils down to Italian small plates/appetizers, salads, and mozzarella to start, and pizza and pasta for main entrees. The "mozzarella bar" consists of seven different types of mozzarella. Nearly 20 different pizzas are offered and 15 varieties of pasta featuring everything from littleneck clams to house-made sausage. Expect to spend up to $10 for each starter and $13-17 each for most of the pizzas and pasta dishes. If you like mozzarella, the "Grandioso Tasting" is recommended because it allows your table to sample different types of mozzarella at a better value. Here's a rundown of the items I've tried at Vingenzo's: Mozzarella Tasting - Affumicata, Mozzarella di Bufala, Mozzarella Fior di Latte, Scamorza, Stracciatella di Burrata Antipasto Rustico Per Due - meat and cheese plate consisting of assorted salumi, Italian cheeses, seasonal fruit, and olives Margherita pizza - fresh pomodoro tomato, buffalo mozzarella, basil, olive oil, San Marzano tomato sauce (DOP) Gnocchi al Gorgonzola Dolce e Spinaci - potato dumplings with Gorgonzola Dolce cream sauce and spinach Sugo di Domenica - six-hour braised pork in San Marzano tomato sauce Chocolate hazelnut, espresso, and tiramisu gelato The mozzarella plate is good and recommended if you like cheese. The cheeses are accompanied with a mixed green salad, cherry tomatoes, capers, peppers, and assorted olives. All of the mozzarellas are fresh. They are white in color, soft, and moist. Some are drizzled in olive oil while others are topped with a bit of crushed black pepper. The Affumicata is smoked mozzarella. The Mozzarella di Bufala is made from Italian buffalo's milk. The Mozzarella Fior di Latte and Scamorza are made from cow's milk. The Stracciatella di Burrata has a soft mozzarella shell with a softer cream-mozzarella mixture in the middle. Due to the freshness of the mozzarellas, the flavoring is rather subtle and mild. The meat and cheese plate isn't bad, but is underwhelming when compared to meat and cheese plates at other Atlanta area restaurants, particularly European restaurants like Ecco or "farm-to-table" restaurants like Miller Union. In comparison, it seems lacking and less interesting. A puffy flatbread is served as a complimentary table accompaniment. It's presumably baked in the same oven as the pizzas as the bread comes out with dark char marks similar to the pizza crust. Olive oil and shredded cheese are added for additional flavor. The Margherita pizza looks fantastic, but disappointingly does not taste as spectacular as Antico's or Double Zero's. Then again, Antico really sets the bar high in Atlanta. Vingenzo's version certainly isn't bad. The "DOP" designation stands for "Denominazione di Origine Protetta" or protected designation of origin -- basically, an Italian quality seal of approval for the tomato sauce. The gnocchi are tasty and served in a bowl. The cream sauce is rich, flavorful, and addicting. The dumplings themselves have ridges and are longer than the typical round and clumpy gnocchi. Soft, soothing, and satisfying, it's hard to go wrong with this dish. The braised pork may not be what you expect. I expected a solid cut of meat, but instead the pork is shredded and mixed into a generous heap of a type of shell pasta. The result is a tomato-pasta-pork blend with a bit of cheese. Simple and hearty, but not terribly exciting. There's a gelato display case that holds up to a dozen different gelato at any given time. All of the gelato flavors I've tried (chocolate hazelnut, espresso, tiramisu) have been delicious. The gelato is generally smooth and creamy. The espresso flavor has espresso beans inside for added crunch and a strong/bitter taste. Service is great. The servers are fun and James, in particular, is knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients.
