I suffer from a progressive muscle disease that has over the course of 33 years put me in a position where I can no longer walk without a high chance of falling over and breaking something. I definitely couldn't get up on my own even if nothing was broken. Handicap stalls are useless to me unless I have someone to pick me up from the toilet. Even if I was always using a wheelchair, my upper body strength in some cases is insufficient to fight even gravity. My company was unable to accommodate my condition, and as such I was terminated after a year on leave. My company's disability insurance carrier was unclear about the exact nature of the information they required for a long term disability claim, and so they ended up denying my claim.
