Although its former location was miles away from everything, I'd grown fond of its dusty, dungeonly, homeliness. It's new location in the Heights, however, is so handy! I'm there too much now. I found this place because of Yelp and I agree with everyone this place is a treasure. It's small you do have to do some digging but it's all worth it. The owner is very helpful from the phone call to check out. He really knows his music and artists. This place you have to hit up when you are not in a rush b/c you will be busy crate diving. Adding another star to my original 4. Stuff for any price range, which includes never played before first pressings of The Band Music from the Big Pink, to anything else you can imagine. With in store concerts, and often times free beer from No Label. Allrecords is still my favorite, for personal reasons, but these guys are the hands down best in the city for what they do. About time, I live just a few blocks away. I love wandering around 19th St, and this gives me more reason to. There is a large selection of vinyl, new releases and old classics. Plenty of jazz, classic rock, and tons of punk. There is also a small selection of used CD's. It does not look like they get a lot of new CD releases. Though that is fine because the vinyl and other collectable selection is really good. The quality of the vinyl I bought seemed in good condition, and the guys that work there seem knowledgeable. Stopped here during a lunch break- I'd love to be able to say that it was a strategic decision since it meant that I wouldn't be able to spend the time (and money) that I would've had I had more to spare, but I bumped came across mostly by accident. I walked in and straight to the CDs as I didn't want to look like a newb (I also had a purpose: to find anything by a certain band that contains a certain song that I'm supposed to learn). As I was browsing, the music playing in-house caught my ear as soon as I had time to mind what I was hearing. Actually, the music demanded my attention. Artsy, proggy, funky jazz with horns? Yes, please! "Who's this playing?" "Um... Actually, I don't know, let me check... Oh, Curlew. Yeah, it's kinda quirky. It's got some prog, jazz..." "Cool, thanks. I like it." So I made it a point to go later and grab it when it's not being played. I didn't want to deprive the other patrons of it, nor did I want to be 'that guy' that goes "ok, I'll take it." Ended up leaving with nothing I was looking for, but with two things I needed but wasn't looking for because they're not things you'd expect to find at a lot of places- jeez, am I portraying myself as a hipster... I own a jukebox so I'm always on the lookout for 45s. This place has a huge amount of unsorted 45s loose in boxes that I can spend hours going through. The vast majority of the ones I've picked out, they've sold to me for between $0.29-$1.00, (except for a few very obviously rare ones and even then they were really fair about the price). There aren't a lot of places you can find something like that nowadays. read more

I stop by Vinal Edge about once a week to see what they recently got in. I usually leave with about 1 or 2 new records. Great place to look around and dig through the racks to find that missing gem. Some of the newer records are a bit pricey at times but you can find an oldie for under $10 which is great! Will continue picking up my records at Vinal Edge and adding to my personal collection. read more

First and foremost, I am regular digger. I've crawled in storage units in NJ, warehouses in NYC and garages in Toronto. IMO the deeper the dig, generally the better. This place was OK. Decent records in good shape. Prices were high but what bothered me the most was I saw a couple 12" singles but didnt have a price on them. They were sitting on the floor so I assumed these were the cheaper records beneath the regular stock. So I ask a "how much", and what looked like was the staffer went on ebay or discogs to get a price and said to me "these are $5.99". I could NOT believe what I was seeing. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT SHOPPING HERE. read more

I don't typically update reviews especially when the rating is still a solid, unwavering 5 out of 5 but I feel like this store, its inventory, and its staff deserve another iteration to continue pushing that overall rating towards their inevitable, incomparable 5-star aggregate score. This time, I'll be more detailed about what you can expect from this world-class, unforgettable record shop. Keep reading, it gets pretty good. I've been coming here for years now and despite having a fondness for most (not quite all) record stores in the Houston metro, I keep coming back to Vinal Edge more than all of the rest by an order of magnitude. In fact, if YOU go to Vinal Edge too, statistically speaking you have likely seen me in there pawing through the alternative/indie, punk, metal, and trip-hop sections in that order. If you're a heavy-duty collector or "big fish" as beloved VE owner, Chuck Roast (don't worry about it) calls me, you most certainly make the record store rounds on some predictable, recurring schedule. We happen to shop for albums almost every weekend and Vinal Edge is the only store in Houston that is visited every time we go out. Why? Well, as I mentioned in my last review, they have hands-down the best selection, typically the cheapest prices, the most challenging genre-hybrid musical obscurities playing on the stereo (you've probably never heard of it), the chillest staff, and the cleanest bathroom in the entire Heights area. If you're reading this review in your car while your better half looks for parking on 19th street, rest assured that this place is worth your time. Vinal Edge's inventory is lovingly curated by a staff of people who are both passionate and knowledgeable and that goes much deeper than "I got into records a couple of years ago for RSD" or "I only listen to stuff on Third Man Records." These guys are the real deal and they take music very seriously but they also aren't the type to belittle you or visibly judge you when you walk up with a Natalie Merchant album or ask about whether or not they liked the Niki & The Dove LP that dropped a couple of summers ago. They're classy, they're helpful, and they pretty much only care about making sure your wildest musical fantasies come true. Need that Adele album with that song on it? They have it. Remember that one track off the weird neo-Krautrock album your old roommate at Tulane used to play when he was writing all of that shitty poetry? They can probably get it. Want to try to out obscure them by asking about that side-project that dude from that band in El Paso did in 1987 with nothing but a Casio keyboard, a tambourine, and 3 cats meowing around a condenser mic? Chuck knew him, interviewed him once, and has the original masters on reel-to-reel. I made that last part up but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. The other big thing I want to clarify about Vinal Edge that makes it so special is that it not only has the best overall selection of music in Houston, it also has the least amount of dollar-bin, god-awful dross albums clogging up all of the shelves. I hate nothing more than walking into a so-called record store that is full to the gills with Barry Manilow and Barbara Streisand albums in terrible condition and one tiny shelf full of albums that can't currently be found in literally every dusty garage in America. VE is very selective and thoughtful about the albums they buy and sell and as long as you look through the genres you are interested in, the amount of garbage placeholder albums you'll skip over will actually be very small. If you want to spend a long afternoon flipping through poor quality, damaged, and largely worthless collections, this is not your place. If you want to look through a lot of albums from every time period that are in great condition and very likely available nowhere else in this town (or even state), this is where you should go. Put simply, you can't find a better place to relax, dig, and purchase that album you've been looking for but didn't want to buy on Discogs. They're great people, they've got great records, and they love it when regulars throw the front door open and yell "OHHH YEAHHHHHH" like the Kool-Aid Man. You aren't really in their inner circle until you've done it at least once. Throw the door open, yell "OHHH YEAHHHHHH" and tell em Nate sent you. Happy digging! read more

I recently visited Vinal Edge again during a little down time between work and plans to meet up with a friend and within my first ten minutes of browsing, I had already picked out two records I was definitely going to purchase. The selection here is amazing and quite extensive across several genres. The used vinyl is very well priced, often cheaper than Discogs and fairly adjusted according to condition. In fact, when I got home to check again the next day, I found a similarly conditioned copy of the record I had purchased (Le Tigre's 1994 S/T) was newly listed for $15+ what I had paid! The owner has great taste and it definitely shows. While the prices for new vinyl here may sometimes be a little more than at Sound Exchange or on Amazon (~$1-$4), the selection is larger than at Sound Exchange and the used selection may be some of the best-priced between the stores in Houston and in Manhattan/Brooklyn. read more

This was my first time in, so I am hoping for an improvement next time. There was only one other customer in the store when I walked in, but I wasn't greeted by any of the three up at the front. That was a bit cold. I even had to say hi to one of the employees that walked by me later on. The only time I was acknowledged was when I got to the register with 4 records. I was happy with the prices on my Nick Waterhouse, Sinatra, Harry James, and Benny Goodman albums. Some of the new stuff looked a little high though. I would happily pay those prices if I felt that my business was appreciated. Maybe talking with customers can be a bigger priority than talking about viral internet pictures and videos? I hope so, because I like supporting local. read more

Vinyl Edge is refuge for all of houston's records. if you're looking for vinyl, chances are they have it--and 10 more copies. walking through the jam-packed store is a work out. you're climbing over boxes and boxes of records and you're dodging other music enthusiasts. clear out your day when coming here because half the fun is sorting through all their inventory. their used records are priced really cheap. it's really quite amazing just how much music they've amassed. they've also got used CDs at cheap prices and plenty of record players for sale, newer and used. they repair players too! i can appreciate their 'we are the 99%' signage in the window in a oil town like houston, but they also wrote "we get freaky for..." in a speech bubble above a cardboard cut out of two asian women in the window. way to play on asian american stereotypes and sexualize the asian female body. ah, how people can stand so steadfast for one group's liberation (ironically, the 99%...) but dismiss another marginalized group's... read more

I just want to say I have been collecting records for years and this is a great store for vinyl collectors. They have a great selection of both used and reissued vinyl for a good price. They have a large selection of 45s and actual record players (turntables). the staff is the friendliest staff I've ever met and help you with any questions or demands you need. First of all, their selection is AMAZING! They have thousands of records, CD's and cassettes. I am blown away by the quality of music they have available. Also, the music they play in the store is awesome. The cherry on top of this place is the customer service! The employees are very nice and pleasant to talk to. Chuck, the owner, took his time to email me and let me know that they restocked two albums I had asked about weeks before. Solid selection. Convenient location. Well laid out. Staffed with people who do their jobs. Price, the price is what it is so that consumers can have the pleasure of flipping through rows and rows and rows of vinyl, in their hometown. People, enjoying the pleasure of being out in society and bonding with their fellow 33rpm loving mortals. As a customer, I am so grateful, that when I walk through the door, I don't immediately wonder if the staff person behind the counter is grateful that I was gracious enough to grace their humble house of commerce with my presence; not money, just my mere physicality. By just being, gratefulness should be espoused by all staff like an ever flowing spring; because I am here. My other half with the credit card and the vinyl habit, will be the one that spends the money, but the gratefulness better be directed this way at me. Probably the best record store in Houston! It's a bit of trek for me to get up there, but it's so worth it. I love their location, I love the folks who work there, and I love the selection. It's probably the only record store I've found so far in Houston that has an extensive punk/metal section. Seriously, you'd be surprised how difficult that can be to find... When I walk in to Vinal Edge though, I always end up buying something! They always play good music (they had Boris on last time I was there!) and there was a guy there telling us about the old metal scene of Houston back in the '90s. I could spend hours there! Vinal Edge is the best of the record stores that I've visited in the Houston area. Why? Variety; there are many different types of music available. Condition of the records for sale. Store organization; you don't get lost or buried in their stock. Everything is clearly marked. They have a pretty solid punk/hardcore section. I've purchased new and used albums by artists like Bikini Kill and Discharge. Most of the prices are reasonable. Moreover, the clerks at the counter are always friendly. I'm a middle age dude (who has embraced his inner 80 y/o man) and I want nothing to do with pretentious hipsters. Oh yeah, and they have copies of Houston Press by the door. Dig it. read more
