Lobster bisque
Lindsay K.

I debated leaving 2 stars but settled on 3 because the food was really tasty. We came in on a Sunday at 5:45 pm. We ordered the lobster bisque special and shrimp to start and placed our order for dinner fairly quickly after sitting down. The two appetizers came out right away and were very unique. We then waited an hour and a half for our entrees. Our server checked in multiple times saying they were on their way/ coming soon. We were just two people and ordered steak frites and mussels. No special order or anything complex. These are two of the most popular items. We watched tables get served and flip to new people in the time it took to get our entrees. When the food did come out, we really enjoyed it. It was well made but this was a disappointing experience overall.

Entrees

Amazing. Overall amazing. Food was exquisite and top shelf! Service was impeccable. The entire restaurant was just perfect!!! It was a perfect meal enhanced by Chef and his staff!!!!

Provençal fish stew - Bouillabaisse

Had dinner at the Vin Rouge and what a great spot. The food was phenomenal - traditional French cuisine served from a kitchen just off the front room. Amazing to see the chefs at work. The service was top-tier, the server could really go into detail about the various offerings: *great* job with the descriptions & recommendations. The ambiance French countryside-casual / provincial. Highly recommended; I'll be back to try their other offerings. (tellement de choses parmi lesquelles choisir)

Trout almondine

Second time at Vin Rouge; first was brunch, so good we had to try dinner! Started with escargot, shrimp Provençal, blue crab claws and the caramelized onion tart. All were excellent; fresh, perfectly cooked and full of authentic flavor. The tart was exceptionally good: a tall slice, moist and rich, onions sweet and delicious. For mains, two of us had the almandine, both loved it. Ali's right off the skin, perfect cook, wonderful flavors. Husband had the pork chop, said the flavors were all on point, but the chop was just north of tender and the potatoes, cabbage and sauce could have been hotter. We went back for the perfect crème brûlée and decadent chocolate mousse we loved at brunch, and added the lemon tart: on par with the others. Service was excellent, again. Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without hovering. Notably top shelf service for the area.

Wonderful little restaurant in Durham - food is delicious and service was fantastic. (Only complaint was the potatoes dauphinois were cold, I pointed it out and they reheated them and it was greasy and burnt.). Will go again for sure!

Gratin de Macaroni

As always, the food was excellent, the service very attentive, and the ambiance of a French farmhouse. Their onion soup ("SOUPE À L'OIGNON GRATINÉE") alone is worth the trip, and their Mac and cheese ("Gratin de Macaroni") is not far behind. Portions are generous. The menu is not vast, but what they have is very good.

The ambiance is nice for a feeling that takes you from Durham to a night in France. The service is simple, attentive, and upscale as bread/olive spread is served, utensils are changed out for you, and all the food is brought out at the same time. We had all of the specials of the day and they were all extremely delicious. The salmon dish was the best one of the night. The desserts were nicely balanced in sweetness. It is on the pricier side so I would reserve a trip for a nice night out.

Wow. Everything was incredible for this dinner. The authentic French food, the ambience, the wait staff, the timing of the meal. Genuinely have no notes to improve. This is a must visit if you're in Durham.

Very nice date night spot in Durham off Ninth St near Duke's campus. If you're in the mood for French cuisine this will satisfy your craving. The wine menu is INSANE how extensive it is. The service we had was great and the server was kind, friendly and attentive to our table ensuring he answered all our questions. The food was delicious and we were able to try some items we normally wouldn't be able to try. Everything was just delicious. If you're looking for a top notch place featuring French food, Vin Rouge is your place.

Hanger Steak

Our beautiful daughter and her husband invited us to dinner at Vin Rouge. We had recently returned home from France and thought, wow more French food! Don't let the name fool you. This is not French cuisine. Calling Fish of the day, Poisson du jour doesn't make it French. There are no classic French dishes like Coq au Vin or Cassoulet or beouf bourguignon. So why did I give this place 5 stars? It's Great! The atmosphere is very warm and rustic. The staff are fantastic and incredibly accommodating and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious. The appetizers we all shared were very good. I had the hanger steak medium rare. It was cooked perfectly. We ended dinner with a mix of desserts served like a charcuterie board. Cocktails and wine prices were very reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Anyone know if their French onion is made with broth and if so, what kind?

I have no idea. :) We've eaten their once and it was excellent! I would say it's very traditional French so suspect it is with broth.

The service is awesome--our server was super friendly and gave me a great drink recommendation when I wasn't sure what I wanted. It ended up being perfect. My friend and I shared a glass of the 2023 Cederberg Bukettraube (sweet white wine) and got the charcuterie board for one with the truffle salami. That board was so good--I can't stop thinking about it. The toasted baguette slices with truffle salami and mustard? Unreal. It was the perfect little snack to share. We also had the citrus lavender crème brûlée, which was surprisingly delicious. I don't usually go for crème brûlée, but this one was light, not overly sweet, and just had a really nice flavor. I've also tried their shepherd's pie before and loved it--wish it was still on the menu! The vibe inside is moody and cozy, and they've got a cute outdoor patio too. Overall, such a great spot. A little pricey, but I'll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend checking out Killer Queen.

The wine list is broad and thoughtfully curated, with options that feel approachable whether you're a casual wine drinker or someone looking to try something new. The sommeliers were welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping us find something we loved. The space itself is adorable, with eclectic décor and cozy lighting that makes it easy to settle in and stay awhile. It's a great spot for conversation and a relaxed evening with friends. The only downside is that the space is fairly small, and I would have loved to see one or two more lower seating options for small groups rather than mostly high tops. That said, I could absolutely see us coming back for a pre- or post-theater glass of wine or an easy catch-up night.

I love that they offer wine in multiple ways: there's a retail section for bottles, a wine bar, and a full restaurant. It really gives guests a lot of variety, no matter what kind of experience you're looking for. For appetizers, we ordered the Wagyu Beef Sliders and the Crispy Brussels Sprouts, and both were absolutely amazing. Everything was packed with flavor. If I had planned to drink more wine, I definitely would've tried the Cheese and Charcuterie Board because I saw one at the table next to us and it looked incredible. There were four of us at the table, and we each tried different entrées. One person ordered the Crab Risotto, which was full of flavor and had a nice kick of spice. Another ordered the Sweet Corn Carbonara--the sweet corn cream sauce was phenomenal and the fettuccine was cooked perfectly al dente. Someone else got the New York Shrimp with a seasonal arugula salad and balsamic demi-glaze. It was seasoned to perfection and didn't need any sauce. I had the North Carolina Catch Special, which that night was shrimp and scallops served over a bed of vegetables. It was absolutely delicious. The menu is on the smaller side, but everything we tried was bursting with flavor. The service was phenomenal--the staff was friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. The only small downside was that they had run out of straws, which I personally like when I'm drinking, but it was hardly a dealbreaker. Overall, The Wine Feed delivered on all fronts: atmosphere, food, wine, and service. I'll definitely be back.

There's an S-shaped bar along the right side as you walk in with a few smaller tables scattered to the left and ahead, but if you walk around the plantings, there are larger tables in the rear. We had reserved a place for eight, and they fit us in with plenty of room around as a buffer. Few other parties joined us back there, so it was very quiet and great for friends catching up. We tried several wines, but I was a bit shock ed that the list wasn't longer: three reds, three whites, a few rosés and sparkling offerings was all there were. The only Italian red was a blend, which was ok. 60% Sangiovese, it was ok, but I'd have loved a bold Tuscan red like a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo or a full-on Sangiovese. I ordered the wild mushroom flatbread and the pasta carbonara. the flatbread was delicious, and very filling. Half went home for a lunch treat the next day! The pasta was ok, but there weren't the flavors I was expecting. Hardly any meat was in the dish, and it was just a kinda "ok" creamy pasta dish. But the service and the atmosphere was amazing! It's funny - many in this group have met since and we always remark how other places have such a larger wine selection than this one that has "wine" in the name. Maybe they need to change the name if they aren't going to have a wider selection. Still a fun place, just done expect a lot of selection.

Five stars for Liberty & Plenty, a true gem that we didn't even plan on visiting. We were headed…read moredown the street to somewhere else, saw the sign, looked at each other and said, "Let's check this out" and I am so glad we followed that impulse because it turned into one of those stops that completely makes your afternoon. What was supposed to be a quick pop in turned into two full hours of socializing, tasting, talking and working our way through a lineup of spirits that dhows just how much care and craft is happening inside this place. I need to say, Stephanie is a darling. She's not a bartender. She's a proper mixologist, the kind of professional who knows her spirits, knows her history, knows how to read a customer, and somehow manages to be both entertaining and deeply knowledgeable at the same time. She walked us through their menu with the kind of confidence that makes you trust every recommendation, and every drink she made had that extra flourish that tells you she actually loves the work. It's rare to find someone who can make you laugh, teach you something, and hand you a drink that's better than what you expected all in the same moment, but she does it effortlessly. Somewhere between the rum and the vodka, we learned that they're gearing up for a big move to Wilson, expanding from two stills to a dozen, which is wild and honestly well deserved because the quality here is already top-tier and the idea of them scaling up that much is exciting. You can feel the ambition from the crew here, the sense that they're on the cusp of something bigger, and it made every sip feel like you're getting in on a story that's about to blow up. That said, I'm begging. Please, please, please, find a way to keep a tasting room in Durham. You're awesome, the vibe is awesome, the people are awesome, and this city needs places like this where you can wander in on a whim and end up staying for two hours because everything feels and tastes just right. Expansion is great, growth is great, Wilson is lucky to have you, but Durham will really miss you if you disappeared completely. Liberty & Plenty is the kind of spot you stumble into once and then start recommending to everyone you know. If you're anywhere nearby, go. And if Stephanie is behind the bar, settle in, because you're in very good hands. [Review 1073 of 2026 - 4782 in North Carolina - 26252 overall]

That's…read morethe way I felt walking into LouElla's After a long day at work and some evening errands, Jack and I were making our way home, when I decided to check out wine stores that were still open on my route. Louella's came up as one of the few still open after 9 PM. I checked the website, and found that they have not, one, not two, but an entire page of fortified wines and Vermouth! As a cocktail nerd, this place checked boxes I didn't even realize I had! There's half a rack of bitters and other premixes. The atmosphere on this blissfully warm night in September was dimly lit, quietly elegant ambiance music (Think Brian Eno, Volcano Choir, or Bon Iver) From outside, with two large TVs above a bar, you may think it's a typical sports bar. But no one here is drinking beer, they have pizza from down at Hutchin's Garage and various wines out on the tables out front. With real glasses. Like adults. Here in the south in a semi-pandemic semi-lock-down. After picking out three different sweet vermouth to try, I bought a glass of Dolcetto and a pre-boxed cheese/meat tray. Although the cheese was from the cooler, as it set out, it was evidently fairly fresh, because it warmed up testily. Sadly, they close at 10, so I'll have to wrap this up later. Suffice it to say, if you're looking for a place to grab a special bottle to upscale your Negroni, or just can't seem to find Pechaud's bitters anywhere, now you have a place to check out. There is an entire 85% more of the store to explore for me, since I had arrived with a narrow purpose and found it immediately. But you can bet, I'll be back.
