I took an vintage YSL mombasa bag in to get repaired. They did an amazing job of putting it back together and saving the bag that was now a friend. I asked if they could do another cross-body bag for me that would fit a table and some papers for when I traveled. I use a walking stick so I only have one hand available to grabbing my cell phone or searching for the right paperwork. What they produced was brilliant! It was larger than my mombasa but smaller than a courier's bag. The sizing was spot on, the leather just the right amount of toughness, and the custom attention to detail, well, enough said. I bought a large backpack (Lulu one pocket medium) in 2016. It was pricier than most backpacks you find online, but completely worthwhile. It is made of very sturdy cow leather, looks great, and has been my companion for over 3 years. Great for groceries, beverage bottles, travel or the laptop. Ask to see sample cuts of older 'aged leather' so you can get an idea of what your bag will look like 10 years from now. You'll definitely have it that long and the leathers all age differently. I found Village Tannery online. After not finding what I wanted locally, I searched years online for a leather crafter who could create the bag I had in mind. I knew the bag features I wanted (plain heavy leather, comfortably hold a 17 inch laptop, long straps, zippers, external pocket) but I didn't have a good idea what to do next. Village Tannery was one of the few stores that sold bags I like AND did custom orders. Plus the prices were reasonable. I got in touch with the store and Semih talked me through what I wanted. He used his years of expertise to turn my ideas into a beautiful finished bag. You can see the outcome of the design drawings and my leather swatch choice in the photo section. I'm hard on my work bags. I usually go through less expensive leather bags every 2-3 years plus they always need costly repair work. The sign on the door says they've been in business for 44 years. Based on my experience of a few days' ago, I wonder if this store will see 45 years. I walked in with a simple request: could they stamp initials on a small leather item I'd gotten from work? The letters were to be stamped on an intended gift for my wife. Based on the store's reputation and diversity of leather goods they make plus my experience with other leather stores I assumed this would be a pretty simple request. When I showed the clerk the leather item and asked if they could stamp initials, he just said "No". Surprised, I asked again. Got the same one word response. When I asked if he knew of any other local shops that might do the work, he said only "check the Internet" as if it were a new invention that I'd not heard of before. Okay then. I don't own a small business. But if I did, and I couldn't help a customer with a seemingly basic service, after 44 years I *might* know of a nearby store offering that service. SHOP SMELLS GREAT.. SOMETHING ELSE STINKS. Bear in mind it's just my experience - recently went here to find a gift for a friend. One employee was great, gave an estimate for a custom piece. Returning with a template the owner wanted to double the estimate for the same piece. Fine. Believing in supporting a local business, we put a deposit down but upon returning found it was not made to the specs we asked for, with one of the key pockets so shallow and wide that whatever is placed inside and likely to fall out. The owner was rude and insulting, rolling his eyebrows.. and most importantly - outright lied about the conversation that was had about the pocket. Then, the red flag as the owner declared 'do you know how many celebrities I make things for?!?" I don't care one bit which celebrity you cite on your resume. Tacky AND deceitful.. spend your money elsewhere.. at places that deserve it. Found the nicer version of the item at a great local store Jachs at 310 Bleecker street. Great Turkish proprietors.. helpful and kind. Oh, and the price? for the same as the employee originally quoted us at Village Tannery. I take no pleasure writing this.. hopefully the owner learns the kind of human being you are impacts your business. read more

After 30 years... I finally needed a replacement. Back in the late 80s my (then) boyfriend (now husband) and I discovered Village Tannery. I was an aspiring actor and wanted a leather bag to carry stuff as I made my rounds for auditions and interviews and such. We walked into the store just as Richard Chamberlain was walking out. He had the exact bag I wanted. We both bought one like it and it has served me well through three decades of near daily use. I've traveled all through the US, Europe, Central America, the Caribbean and Canada with the bag. I've used it as a briefcase, an overnight bag, a laundry bag and a grocery bag (it expanded to more than double it's normal size.) Pockets galore, roomy compartments and made so well that except for a replaced zipper, I've had not a single problem. The bag was like a part of me. Recently, though, the leather had finally begun to wear through where it had rubbed against my leg. Personally, I liked the character of the small holes, but my husband decided I needed a new one and he surprised me with a custom made replacement on Christmas morning. It's nothing short of spectacular. The leather is soft and supple... like glove leather. I can't stop touching it. The dimensions are a little more snug than my other bag but that may be because the other one had stretched out over the decades. When John called the store to inquire about placing an order, TJ (?) actually remembered him from 30 years ago... I chalk that up to Dr. Kildare and 3 identical bags sold the same day. He called back to say he'd found a beautiful piece of leather with which to make the bag... and he wasn't kidding. It's beautiful. Did I mention I can't stop touching it? This is the place to go if you need an awesome bag. I was in NY for the weekend an in the market for a great go-to bag that I wouldn't have to coddle. After reading the reviews online, I took the train down to the Village and walked right in. I went to the Great Jones location, and the owner greeted my mom and myself. He also let us spend 2 hours in his shop trying out every bag he makes, showing us the different leathers he can use to make anything custom. I found an awesome sling bag in red and had him make it in a great soft leather (for the same price as the stock red). My boyfriend had asked for a bag (and his birthday is next week), and with the owner's guidance and insight found a great bag for his daily commute. I'm giving it to him next week -- and I have the owner's promise that if he doesn't love the bag we can take it back and exchange it. In addition, you have lifetime repairs and customer service. I can't imagine going anywhere else. The bag he made for me smells great (leather!) and is exactly what I need. Fingers crossed for the boyfriend's! In terms of price, it was less than I thought it would be based on the reviews. You'll see midsize purses and men's bags start around 300 or 350. Reading all the reviews I was expecting 500+, and for a bag that will last you years (people trade in briefcases after 16 years -- and you can buy used here!) it's well worth the investment. So go! And tell all your friends to go. Get a custom bag or buy off the shelf -- they're all made right behind the curtain, and I can tell you, the workmanship is freaking fantastic. I love this place and I only visited it twice in about 40 years. I bought a leather backpack when I was in school. At the time, it was a stretch to afford but I'm glad I did. I wore it, everyday, for about 20 years. It's now mainly used for trips. It doesn't matter, every time I use it, someone on the street, mentions it. I have been yelled at from half a block away, going in the other direction "Nice Bag!" About 8 years ago, one of the straps was a bit loose, so I took it back to be repaired. I searched a long time, both in New York and online, for a good looking leather bag that was soft, durable and could fit a small laptop and a professional DSLR camera, with room to spare, while at the same time looking no bigger than the typical student messenger bag. The bag was no more expensive than what I've seen at inferior name brand stores, and the proprietor even cut me a great deal. I have walked into this store multiple times. Each time, it would be the same - just browse around for a couple of minutes, try and pretend as though I actually wanted to buy something, enquire the price, shrug my shoulders or raise my eyebrows and/or make a facial expression which meant "Meh! Too expensive or just not what I was looking for". Well, then there was this time a couple of weeks back when I actually needed (O.K., wanted) a leather laptop bag and I sauntered in to the store like a casual visitor (even though I went there from New Jersey solely with the intention of buying a bag, by bus on a day when students from all the schools in the UK decided to visit the lady Liberty and chose the particular bus which I took, to travel in). I think the guys there take about 5-7 minutes to assess the person walking in to their store - deciding whether he or she is going to buy something or is just looking to kill (their) time. Once they think they have a customer, they start taking you seriously and providing you with options and wise cracks ("expensive" is a relative term. I should know that being a finance professional, you would think). Ignore the wisecracks, even though it is very tempting to do otherwise. Just take up on the offer to see various bags and voila, you are seeing some of the best leather bags that money can buy in this part of the world (make no mistake, these are not the cheapest options by any stretch of imagination. Although, they are much (stretch your right hand and point your index finger towards the sky) better than brand name bag companies (read Jack Spade, Tumi) in terms of quality. Once you have made up your mind (and they sense that pretty quickly), they will try and sell the bag to you albeit very gently. Which explains why I went back home and came back the next day to exchange it for something else which I liked better (even the first time I saw it. But I passed on it since it was significantly more expensive). The exchange thing was very smooth and now I am the happy owner of an excellent leather bag. I get complimented on the bag everywhere I go. Although when they hear the price many people gasp. They also seem pretty serious about their life long warranty on repairs and all. I came here for the last half of my significant other's Christmas present. I wanted a leather purse that was hand crafted by locals and made out of leather that wasn't paper thin. I was looking for something that made of sturdy leather, like my work boots I wear to work, thick and heavy, something that wouldn't fall apart after a year. A special purse also isn't something you drop $1200 on just because its hand made in Italy and from a designer. Any idiot with that money can buy that identical purse. Not exactly one of a kind or thoughtful. I checked out the pictures of the store on yelp and I was delighted. Floor to ceiling, wall to wall of handcrafted leather goods. I decided to stop by there. I found what I was looking for within 30 seconds. Small purse, excellent stitching made of leather that's 3/16" - 1/4" thick. If I wanted to take the leather from that purse and cobble my own work boot, it would last a year of hard construction abuse before being tattered. The associate who helped informed me that if I wanted any alterations to it after I purchased it, like an extra buckle or a different snap for the purse, I would be able to customize it any way I (/she) wanted. She loved it. A week later I threw a generous coating of mink oil on it. When the leather starts getting worn from the elements, it'll take 10 minutes to apply another coat of oil to freshen the leather up, something you can't do with the flimsy cheap leather purses that crack after six months. It was expensive but completely worth it, one of a kind and constructed of tough, thick leather. If she ever wants to drop some money on a nice hand bag or larger purse, I'd take her there.
