I stopped by Downtown Girl just as Ute (pronounced oo-tah, she's German) and her husband Tom were closing up. I told them my story and they insisted I come in for some shopping. With a flip of the switch, the lights were on and music was playing. Downtown Girl carries all sorts of accessories for the feminine urbanite: from Fleur-de-Lis necklaces to soft, furry scarves, bright handbags, and intricate jewelery. If you're looking for a statement fashion piece, you will find it here. Everything sold in Downtown Girl is hand-selected by Ute. You'll definitely be getting a one-of-a-kind accessory and for a very reasonable price. I purchased several glass nailfiles as gifts for my best girlfriends. Ute provided wrapping for each individual item, complete with bright violet tissue paper, a filigree gift bag, and a sticker with her shop's logo. All my gifting needs were cared for under one roof. The colors are muted, the apparel is understated and the jewelry looks more organic with lots of beads, natural stone and ceramic pieces. It's much more Serena than Blair. But oh my gosh, they have some to-die-for knits here! Do you ever find yourself watching a well-styled movie or TV show and you're thinking, "that's the outfit I want! It's so effortless and chic." This is exactly the place where you will find those effortless and chic looks. I'd head back in here before sweater season officially arrives to find some truly unique items.

One in a Million is a "unique boutique," (as it says behind the desk in the store) specializing in "one-of-a-kind" homemade designer jewelry, as well as home décor items, handbags and fashion accessories, and other upscale gifts. The store, located across from the Mercedes-Benz dealer past downtown Montgomery and on the way to Kenwood, prides itself on its unique collection of jewelry from local, national, and international designers. Indeed the "wearable works of art" are unique, but of course that calls for high prices for the many earrings, rings, and necklaces, and the non-jewelry items too. One in a Million also has a lot of fancy home décor items and gifts, from something as simple as a lamp or candle to an elegant chess set or little dog figures for the dog lover. It makes sense why they say "unique gifts," as these weren't something you would find in just any gift shop. One in a Million has its share of ladies clothing and fashion accessories as well, and silk florals too. Now I don't wear jewelry or have a home for which I need to decorate, but I did think this was a very nice store. They had a large collection of unique items great for the home, in addition to their jewelry items, but I advise anyone planning to check this store out to come with a check book or a lot of cash. The items in this store were not cheap by any means, but if you can afford their items, then you could probably find a lot of great stuff. They even have an online store with many of their featured items as well, so check that out if you don't want to drive out to the store. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but also by appointment.

I was looking for some theme specific gifts (tennis, pickleball, spa) for birthday presents. The lovely lady working there was helping someone when I arrived but paused to greet me, which was nice. I was enjoying just wandering around, when they finished she came over to say Hi and make sure I was finding what I needed. She pointed out a section of the store that I might have missed and pointed out some adorable note cards in my themes. I was so impressed by the amount of merchandise that is made in the USA and I found so many fun things in the themes of the parties. Cocktail napkins, note cards, bath bombs, shower scent items and so many cute baby things. I'll be back for sure, good customer service and lots of quality products made here in the USA. This is the kind of shop you come to to buy the perfect little gift for a friend or family while also buying something cute for yourself. We spoke with the owner and she walked us through the whole design and layout process. We received the shirts with time to spare and they look and feel great! We have since ordered a few engraved, wooden signs for our home and as gifts and they look wonderful. Supporting local businesses is important to me and BrickHouse makes it easy to support them. Every time that I have been into the shop I have been warmly greeted and allowed to browse without being hounded to buy something.
