We travel a lot all over the country and Europe. I always try to find local artist enclaves in the area we go. I loved this store. I'm not usually a bog fan of pottery but I was blown away by the unique and beautiful pottery items. It was hard to decide from all of theor great items but I settled on a bird house and a turtle platter. Prices weren't cheap but definitely worth it. I will enjoy these "souvenirs" for many uears to come. One of the ladies there was very helpful without being pushy. read more

Off the beaten path...to put it mildly! On a dirt, gravel and water filled...mud puddle road in Ocracoke. When you make it here, your adventure will be rewarded. This is the place for very nice and fine hand made crafts and art work from locals and select others across the far reaches of the crafty planet. Go here for some really nice hand made jewelry. Check out the craft jewelry from Michael Michaud...some really nice necklaces and ear rings your lady will love. So much art and so much better than the borderline antique/thrift shops that dot the backroads of this island paradise. Philip & Amy Howard are really nice people and very helpful. Visited this charming shop while on vacation and kept thinking about a pair of earrings I saw there once I got home. I contacted the shop and they sent photos of the earrings that I described and sent an invoice and mailed them out promptly to me in a gift box with a handwritten thank you note on an Ocracoke postcard. Definitely worth stopping in and checking out all of the handcrafted goods. Owners were very friendly and helpful! Check out the hurricane water level signs outside on the steps and building. We missed it the first time we visited! read more

I buy something from Village Craftsmen every year during our vacation. From jewelry, books, candles, whimsical musical instruments, hand blown glass wind chimes, pottery to fig preserves, there's something for everyone. Next summer, I'm grabbing one of those adorable license plate bird houses I've been eyeing for years. The walk down historic Howard Street to get there is a treat all by itself. While you're there, pick up a couple of Phillip Howard's books and walk around the island while you read them. He'll even autograph them for you if you happen to run into him. Also, sign up for one of their ghost tours while you're there. Well worth it! read more

Nice guy and great products. Most things here are very pricey but quality stuff. Overall just a very cool store and very fun to find with all the signs on the island leading you there like an adventure. I quite enjoyed my time there. read more

My wife and I went in here to buy Mother's Day gifts. The merchandise is very unique and of nice quality. I was willing to spend $300 to $400 worth of merchandise. Unfortunately, after spending a few minutes in the store, an employee was literally following me around the store as if I was shoplifting. Not one time did she approach me asking if I had any questions or offer any assistance. I also saw a man enter the store wearing a face mask and she approached him because she felt he was not wearing it appropriately (he immediately left). It was at this point we decided to leave and not spend a cent in this store because of the way she made us feel. I'm all about supporting locally owned businesses but after this encounter, they didn't deserve my money. They have good quality items but need to make their customers feel more welcome. read more

This place was great! It was set a bit back off the beaten path along a sandy gravel road, creating an instant sense of whimsical charm. We came during Christmas-time and were immediately offered mulled wine and fig cake upon entering. Everyone was so friendly and eager to hear about how two Kentuckians had come down to the island for a long weekend, having never been before, on a whim. The beautifully crafted items for sale were so neat to browse through. Although we did end up buying a couple of pieces, it was the experience and hospitality of the locals that really made this visit enjoyable. read more

Hidden on the gravel back street of Howard Street is a cool little shop known as the Village Craftsman. This is one of my favorite little shops on the island. The Village Craftsman offers a lot of locally made items and hand made products. The staff are very helpful and friendly as well as knowledgeable about the products they sell. Overall this is a must stop off the beaten path on Ocracoke Island. read more

The store is a little off of the beaten path, down a dirt road that can get very muddy, but it's well worth the visit. It's full of all kinds of handmade arts and crafts items. The prices are on the higher end of things, but the items seem worth the extra dollars. Be careful when moving around the store, though, as they have a you-break-it-you-bought-it policy. read more

I always make my children wait until the last day to buy their special souvenirs from trips. This was one of the two shops we returned to on our last day. (The other is Roxy's Antiques.) My daughter picked out a lovely pair of earrings. It's not cheap, but everything is high quality and unique. Definitely add this to your "must see" list. Their pottery is top notch. And they have a sweeping variety of items to interest anyone. read more
