Inside however, was a different story. Clean, well lit, and full of customers. Cigars, cigarettes, lighters, accessories. Everything from Ginny Stinkers to Romeo y Julieta's! A walk in humidor with a wide array of mild Connecticut leaf wrappers to the rich and bold maduros. Robusots, torpedoes, Churchill's, they have a broad and varied selection. Next time I am in the area, I will certainly drop in to replenish my inventory.

I have been a casual cigar smoker for a few years. I grew accustomed to the dingy, smoky cigar shop frequented by old men whom do nothing but talk about how things used to be. The type of people that still discuss Micky, Mays or Duke. Then it all changed! Enter The Village Cigar Headquarters! This place is a game changer! Owners Miguel and Josephine Baez created a little slice of Miami in New York. This clean, vibrant cigar shop is a God send for me. Since the opening of this shop I have been a weekly customer. On my last visit (earlier today) Miguel picked out an AJ Fernandez San Lotano- Habano, as i made a cup of coffee and sat back and enjoyed my hour long vacation from the day. The stresses of my day melted away with every pull of the cigar and every sip of coffee. As i engaged the friendly staff and patrons with discussion of the World Cup (can you believe Brazil lost 7-1). The conversation organically changed to music, once more people came in. The patrons mingling were a beautiful blend from people in their early 30s to gentlemen in their 60s. The blend consisted of men and women. As Miguel says "Every cigar is a love story"- It has a beginning, an romantic middle and tear jerking ending. The Village Cigar HQ is similar. It's the modern Rick's from Casablanca- the ultimate love story. They have a customer for life! read more

Unlike the dingy smoke filled cigars parlors of the past, VCH is an ultra modern lounge. It's clean and vibrant. The thing I love about this place is the vibe. It's not the regular group of people talking about how it used to be... It brings people that talk about how it is. Not only can you find legendary blends like Romeo, Montes or Fuentes but the boutique lines like Viaje or Pura Soul are exceptional. Ok, so I happen to be a man of a *few* vices…read more.. Yes, I know how bad smoking is for you - I recently had the pleasure of wrapping some poor soul's newly-obtained stump resulting from a below-the-knee-amputation due to poor circulation related to cigarette use - but I REALLY enjoy an occasional cigar and glass of outside-my-tax-bracket-whiskey. This is THE place to go in the area when you need any tobacco item. Two walls ranging from Claro to Oscuro feature almost every well-known brand as well as some pretty obscure finds. There is almost always a table featuring a pile of stuff on sale, and I have never bought a stale stogie from here (although at a pace of less-than-one/month, I could easily be wrong). There's tables and newspapers (also a Greek paper available FYI) that you can sit at and enjoy a smoke, if doing so at home is verboten. (And unless you count the QuickDraw, there are no TV's, but I consider that a refuge in this age of constant-screen-staring.) Like any good tobacco shop, they've got every form of lottery available here - and people seem to hit pretty consistently from the posted winnings near the register. Oh, I almost forgot - REAL PIPE TOBACCO BLENDS! There's a counter with about TWELVE different blends of pipe tobacco in big ol' clearly labeled apothecary jars. If you smoke a pipe, just FORGET about getting those ridiculously priced tins or plastic baggies with crap in em - these blends don't b***s**t around with names like "Summer Sunrise" or "Engine No 45"; they're straight-up - "Amaretto", "Vanilla", "Cordial" and SO superior for making your own custom blend. And at about $4/oz, they're also far cheaper than the pre-packaged garbage most people are forced to buy since, well let's face it, smoking pipes has been on a downward trend for a long, long time. But hey, we'll be able to indulge freely soon enough once they figure out a way to slap some stem-cells in ya and re-grow all those tarred-up alveoli... right?

I took my business here because I'm a believer in supporting small businesses and shops as much as possible. Today, as I called before driving over, I was told that this is no longer possible. Specifically when asking about why a box that's available to consumers for $17 online is being sold for $25 in store, I was told to call the other store to speak to a manager. As I called the other store, the employee hung up on me mid sentence, and did not pick up any of my next few calls. When they finally did, I was told that "this is our rule and we charge you the price we need to charge you because you get the convenience of having the product now. You can buy your products online and wait". As a retail store, even though it's understandable to have prices at slightly higher levels to make a profit when not selling at larger volumes like online retailers, there is no justification to not work with customers making reasonable requests. Expecting the "lowest price guaranteed" is a lot to ask from small business owners, but customer service and reasonable prices is the bare minimum. I will do as the manager told me to and take my business elsewhere. Save your $ for someplace that doesn't hike up prices over 45% and appreciates customer loyalty.
