It's the type of building that makes you want to give it a big hug, if only your arms were long enough Built over a hundred years ago as the village firehouse, it also did duty as a church before finally settling in as home to the Flavin Art Institute. How cute is it? Look at the address: Corwith Avenue off of Main Street. The official address is nothing but an intersection. That is seriously small town. The museum houses nine of Flavin's flourescent lighting sculptures. That's right, I did say "flourescent lighting sculptures." It's an amazing medium that Flavin playfully embraced for much of his career. By manipulating the colors and intensity of the lights, Flavin is able to extend each sculpture beyond it's direct physical presence, such that every nook and corner of the museum acquires its own mood. Because the museum is dedicated to Flavin, the works can be installed in a way that they are seen to best effect. If you know Flavin from other museums, come here to see his art taken to the next level of intensity. The museum also has a gallery that houses temporary exhibitions. When I was there, the exhibition was "Dan Flavin and the Hudson River School" and it included his drawings and paintings of the Hudson River, as well as works by artists who had influenced him during this phase of his career. It was fascinating to see, so different from the light sculptures that made him famous. If you come, plan some other activities. The museum is small and even if you linger, you'll likely be done within an hour. If nothing else, take the time to explore the small shops of downtown Bridgehampton. Bottom line: for art lovers who are in the area, the Flavin Institute should not be missed. For people already admire Flavin, it is a must-see, even if you do have to travel for a day.

Needed to visit an art museum for a final assignment requirement and came here by default, because…read morethe museum closer to my house was closed for summer maintenance. When I pulled up, I was happy to see how convenient their parking lot was. I was eligible for a student discount and paid $10 for my admission, my professor could have scored me a free pass, but coming here spontaneously left me no time to obtain one; it's considered charity, so I wasn't upset about it. I told McKayla at the front desk it was my first time visiting and she enthusiastically showed me everything I needed on a map. I like that the space wasn't overcrowded with people, because that would have triggered anxiety. I was surprised to see they had work by Andy Warhol, an artist I am familiar with. They had a wide selection of older and newer pieces of work. I ended up choosing to do my report on Lilly Martin Spencer's 'This little pig went to market' oil on cut arch board 1857. She was the breadwinner of her household which was rare at the time and portrayed women in a respectable way; that won me over. Overall, I am happy the universe brought me here and I got a 105%, extra credit for submitting early!

I was informed that next year the museum will also house Gerson's paintings. I thought it was a world class museum and one of the best cultural options in the area. The Collection and gardens are open to the public, free of charge, every summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 PM to 4 PM.

The current exhibit on Indonesian textiles was very interesting. I also enjoyed the many pieces from Picasso and Kandinsky. They even have a Calder mobile. We also enjoyed the William Blake exhibit with his poems and prints. The staff was nice and friendly. The museum was clean and their map flyer really helped us navigate through the many rooms. Free admittance and free lockers are provided in the basement for our big purses, coats, and water bottles.

Outside you can go inside the restored caboose. Fortunately, the $10 admission will also cover the Riverhead museum as well so you can take your receipt and head to the other one and use it there as well.
