The best museum on Long Island. My girlfriend was so excited about visiting, she was almost too nervous to open the door. So I went in first, and it felt like opening up a gold mine! It's full of bright, sparkly minaudières ("little treasures" in French) which are not just handbags, but works of art. The Leiber's story is an inspirational testament of human perseverance and determination.
Running through my mind was "could Judith have been so successful without her husband Gerson, and could he have been without her?" The answer is "yes and no." They are both driven, creative, and very prolific individuals, but together, it seems like they became some kind of juggernaut which is still going strong today.
Do yourself - and your friends - a favor and visit this temple of creativity, love and beauty. It's a serene, and wonderful place that you will never forget. The garden surrounding the museum is natural and relaxing. It's a small museum, but we were there for over an hour. The man at the front desk (Scott) knew his stuff and was happy to give us all of the info he knew and answer all of our questions.
There's no gift shop. But they gave us a free booklet which I would have gladly paid $20 for. It really felt like visiting a friend's home and checking out their art collection!
I believe that they have extended the show through September and possibly into October this year (2013). Next year will be Gerson's work, and we are extremely excited about going back. read more
