Pretty good! Didn't blow my mind but was a nice spot to get some breakfast while visiting Athens. The savory food was okay. Expensive ($16 for toast with cheese and mushrooms) and underwhelming but not bad by any means, and $9 for a bagel with egg and cheese. We got the caprini toast and it didn't have the micro greens as it says on the menu, but no biggie. The bagel with egg and cheese was very bland, and it is a square of scrambled egg, not a fried egg. The baked goods were fantastic! The sticky date cake is crazy good! It weighs a million pounds and is so thick and just the perfect texture. We also got the lemon yogurt cookie which was soft and tangy, 10/10. They have a cool little retail space for various alcohols, non-alcoholic beverages, food, tea etc. I was happy to buy some local loose leaf tea, and there were a ton to choose from! Service was fine. The person who took our order was friendly, the food took a lot longer than expected but we had time to kill so it didn't bother us. This place was so yummy!! Time of local products in their store section along with bakery items they make in house and a great breakfast and lunch menu. Plenty of indoor and outdoor covered seating too. You order at the counter and they bring it to you with a number. Everything we ordered was so delicious and my favorite was the homemade herb polenta on the side of the salad. Butternut squash soup came with a slice of their country bread and was so flavorful. I have been a customer for years, ordering whole quiches to cups of coffee, etc. I have never experienced what took place today Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 prior to their closing at 3pm, anywhere in my life. As an insulin dependent diabetic my blood sugar had gotten very low, my brain doesn't function as it should when this happens. I was trying to get myself functioning enough to order. Got the Veesh (Vegan Quiche) and the portion sizes lacked consistency. I got two slices and one was massive, meanwhile the other was very small. They didn't taste the greatest and they were over cooked and they certainly were not worth $8/ each. Only giving two start because my husband enjoyed his coffee. But the food was not good and was overpriced and it took 20 minutes for my small to go order. If you want coffee, maybe come here if you can stand the extreme political signs everywhere. The coffee is great. The food well I have been waiting about 40 min to get a simple order of the velush.i am In from out of the kitchen. No one has said anything to me even when I checked on it all they said was they are working on it. I have no complaints over the coffee or the food they are both very good. When I left they did give me a free cookie for making me wait. I am here visiting for a weekend I don't have a lot of time to spend hanging out village bakery and Cafe I have other places I need to be. That is why I don't think I ever will order food here again. Village Bakery and Cafe was a sight I rather wouldn't have seen. The inside is quite nice with the business praising their Fair Trade and incredibly liberal views, but the food and service is where it's lacking. The display case with food does not have any indication of Gluten Free or Vegan options, just markings with the item name on it, of course you can ask but when the line is wrapping around the store due to the lack of staff or the poor selection of people working the register, it's really hard to be able to take your time without feeling like shit about it. We ordered our food, a Wake Up Call with foccocia, a hot latte, an iced vanilla chai, and a black pepper and onion bagel with cream cheese. The wake up call was advertised as having polenta, it did not, and the onion bagel did not taste like onion, or black pepper, it really tasted like cardboard. The foccocia served with the wake up call was not foccocia, it was a glorified english muffin. Lastly, we got our drinks almost 20 minutes after we ordered our food. I could eat breakfast and lunch here every day. Today I had a smoked trout frittata while my wife had a vegetarian quiche. The frittata had mild smoky flavor with an abundance of cheese along with bits of chopped kale and other wholesome and delicious ingredients. The quiche was a nice balance of eggy cheesiness and vegetables. They placed sliced Asian pear on the side of each dish which provided a sweet and slightly tart foil to the main items. I always make a stop at Village Bakery and Cafe when in Athens. It's an important part of the local foods scene. They have healthy and vegan friendly breakfast and treats. It's not the cheapest but it's better for you than all that processed shit. The staff is very friendly and will assist in choosing something for you. I know Athens is serious about its local foods. This is no clearer than at Village Bakery and Cafe. It uses local products like Snowville Creamery. It also has an activist kind of atmosphere, so if you're into that you will love this place. The staff is still friendly though, so don't let that scare you off. It produces its own electricity. They instilled a geothermic heating and cooling system that lasts 3 times longer than a conventional HVAC. It's open every day except Mondays. The kitchen closes at 7 but you can shop until 8. On Sundays it has a brunch from 9 to 2. The Maine ginger beer is great. The Village Bakery iced chai is about $3 something. It's the best. For the brunch menu it has the Rancheros Verduras which are about $12.95. It's tempeh sausage on baked corn polenta, with sweet corn, onions, and peppers. This can be made vegan without the cheese. It comes with sides of greens, and with black beans or oven roasted potatoes. The regular breakfast menu has some vegan items. The breakfast tacos are 1 for about $5 or 2 for about $8. It's made with shagbark corn tortillas, and choice of protein. The tempeh sausage is the vegan choice. It comes with a side of maple barbeque sauce. The Wake Up Call is about $7. It's polenta and tempeh with barbeque sauce. The lunch menu has a combo where a sandwich comes with salad or soup for about $10. The breaded tofu sandwich is the vegan choice. In addition the bakery menu is also vegan friendly. The vegan chocolate chip cookie is $1.50, which is not a bad price. I won't buy too much since its not cheap. It's worth trying a few healthier options to see how good they are. This is a good place if you would like to know more about local foods there. read more

My wife and I went here with our two kids on a Saturday morning for a late breakfast. This is not a large place and it was full when we arrived. The place has the typical hip coffee shop feel. We were kind of confused when we entered if you ordered at the counter or sat down and ordered. We asked and you order at counter then find a seat. The food is mostly local organic foods when possible. They have a map that shows the farms and locations of the food and drinks. They brought out our order for food but we didn't have drinks yet, so we asked about them. I don't know if you are supposed to wait for the drinks at the front counter before sitting down or if they bring them to your seat. I ordered the veggie burger which is black beans and beets as the main ingredients. The sandwich is good but not overly tasty. Pales in comparison to the veggie burger with similar ingredients from Northstar in Columbus. My wife ordered the breakfast tacos. They were good also. The kids had the grilled cheese with Laurel valley creamery cheese. All the food was good but the serving sizes are rather small for the price. Had quiche Lorraine and a crumb bun. The QL was so-so. Lots of large pieces of onion, couldn't taste the Swiss. Wonderful crust, but the whole thing was was on the cold side of luke warm. The crumb bun was very good - verging on excellent. Wished it had been soft and warm instead of cold and rock hard! Great flavor though. The down side was the uninformed activism and the "world-should-be-fair-place" mentality which permeated the entire restaurant. When combined with expensive mediocrity of the food, it spoiled the whole meal. Why do most vegan/vegetarian establishments have to destroy their business by displaying their ignorance on certain topics? I'd not touch on it here, but as it's an important part of their business, they've opened the door. Do they not know that Gasland and Gasland 2 have been utterly disproved? Hippy hometown brunch was a wonderful experience. Came here with some friends while passing thru, allowing Yelp to guide the way. And guide us to a good place it did! I am always on the lookout for a bakery. I love sweets! Me and my bestest friend found this place while in Athens for the Warrior Dash. Quaint little eclectic bakery with such a cool vibe. Lots of treats to pick from. I got a variety pack including a lemon lavender short bread (great lemon flavor). I got chocolate chip cookies, yummy. And a mocha chocolate chip Blondie/fudge brownie which was scrumptious. I Also got two cinnamon sticks for the hubby. My bestie got cinnamon stick as well and they did not care for them noting there was not enough cinnamon flavor. My friend got a fig cake as well and thought is was very good. My favorite was the brownie. I would recommend this place and it's easy to find. As a side note they have beer and wine in this place as well with a very wide selection on both to pick from. I travel to Athens at least once a year for work and Village Bakery is always my very first stop. I'm madly in love with it. The owner and staff are welcoming, soft-spoken and sweet. They use local and organic ingredients in their baked goods, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings. For breakfast, I love the breakfast pizzas and granola. And, I get a cup of their Fair Trade (obviously!) coffee. For lunch or dinner, I go with Village Bakery Veggie Burger. And, for the road, an oatmeal raisin cookie. Village Bakery also has a mini-market where the sell dairy, meat, vegetables, etc. from local farms. They also have an awesome micro beer selection. read more

Outside of the hustle and bustle of Court St. lies this hidden gem. Village Bakery was my go-to for brunch on the weekends as it was typically much less crowded than Casa or Court Street Diner. The crowd is a nice mix of families, professors and grad students, all looking to get away from the typucally undergrad dominated places. My favorites include: Egg & Cheese Sandwich - ($3.95-$5.50) Served on your choice of a biscuit, wheat bread or rye bread with the addition of tomatoes, red peppers and smoked ham for a small fee. (Protip: the smoked ham is delicious!) Crumb Bun - ($2.50) Delicious whole grain coffee cake flavored with vanilla and almond, with an oat crumb topping. Mmm, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! On Sundays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.they have brunch specials which vary week to week. If they have the Huevos Rancheros, go for it as it's made with a home-made corn tortilla. One of my favorite spots in Athens. If you're vegan or vegetarian, I can't recommend this place enough. They have plenty of veg* options including vegan bacon and substitute options. The breakfast is particularly worthwhile, of note being the veggie tacos and quiche. Salads are diverse and interesting. The coffee is OK (cold brew is nice), but the food is really where it's at here. Fresh bread and bakery items are available, and desserts are cycled daily so there are different treats offered at each visit. The location is also very close to the Athens Bread Company, another must-stop for fresh bakery-minded folks. It can be a little pricey, but everything is made fresh and much of it is sourced locally, so it doesn't feel unfair. I enjoy working at the tables, some of which have outlets. There's also a patio area that's lovely during warm months. It's best to visit during the summer, as there's not a ton of space inside so it can get a little crowded during certain times of the Fall/Spring school sessions. Parking out front is limited, but there's a lot behind the neighboring building that's free to use. read more
