Dynamics provides two different group classes. An introduction/ beginner class that is 45 minutes long and a regular class for an hour. They have a ton of different classes throughout the day to accommodate people working. The classes usually begin with a warm up and stretching and then they lead into a few different circuit workouts. Every time a go there is always a new work out or a it has been modified so you are not working out the same part of your body. You will do a lot of things using your own body weight which is a lot harder than it seems. The instructors are very nice and will motivate you and not in a condescending way. $7.50 for one class or 6 dollars a class (60 dollars) if you purchase the 10 class pass which is a steal, cash or check only, no cards taken. Bring a water bottle and change of shoes if you can. The first time walking threw the door is the hardest part. Embrace it! They want you to succeed there and so do you.

Every class is different and you won't be bored. The Scarborough location is a little bigger than the Portland location, and from my experience tends to be less crowded. I am a regular at the 6am Tuesday/Thursday class with trainer Jaime, who is kind, motivating, organized and really just all around great! Their website has their schedule with all of the boot camp classes. They rarely cancel unless there are extreme weather conditions. I have noticed that a lot of other gyms/trainers cancel boot camps last-minute so I really appreciate this about Dynamics. They have regular boot camps which last an hour, and basic boot camps which are 45 minutes. Boot camp goes like this: A 10 minute warm up with drills like butt-kicks, lateral squats, skips, and ending with bear-crawls. Dynamic stretch is next followed by resistance band-work to strengthen your butt and hips. Then comes the circuits which work out your whole body and keep your heart-rate elevated. Sometimes there is back and forth partner work, and sometimes stations with TRX, KetlleBells, Medicine Balls, Body Weight, Fitness Bands, etc... Examples include TRX Rows, Push ups, Tricep presses, medicine ball shuffles, kettle bell swings, sprinter sit ups, squat jumps, dead lifts... etc.. You can always modify any exercise. There is usually a finisher which includes something awful like Burpees :) After a quick stretch, you are out the door having accomplished an awesome work out! There is water for sale for $1 but I always bring a full water bottle and towel. You can go at your own pace and everyone in the class is kind and encouraging. For first timers, try the basic boot camp and work your way up. You won't be disappointed!

Staff are top quality people, fun to work with, and small groups make an hour of hard work as fun as working out can be. I know it's working due to performance on the field - quicker turns, surer stops, semi-chronically-injured areas like impinged shoulders getting stronger and have wider pain free range, and an annoying unneeded 10 lbs leaving my body. In my opinion everyone who can ... should ... do this kind of training whether they are athletic or not, and Shelby Trained is, now that I'm familiar with the entire program, an obvious place to do it.

The trainers are extremely kind and knowledgeable and have continually helped me improve myself and stay healthy. I submitted an inquiry about learning more about Beacon and heard back within the same day and was able to meet the owner and get an assessment scheduled quickly. After the assessment, I jumped right into classes and loved it. Well out-fitted, a great community of friendly and motivating members, and awesome coaches -- Beacon has it all! I think what I appreciated the most about Beacon is the team's attitude towards fitness; fitness can enrich your life and make living your life easier and better. After doing CrossFit for years at a previous box, I was so used to a culture of just wanting to throw around as much weight as possible with no regard to form and listening to my body. At Beacon, I felt supported to really focus on how to properly move my body, how to best challenge my body, and really how to have fun with CrossFit again. I'm currently enrolled in small…read moregroup training and we are working on deadlifts, back squats, pull ups and ring rows, as well as classic CrossFit cardio-based moves (rowing, assault bike, running, etc.). My coach/trainer, Seth, is amazingly helpful and patient in teaching me how to do handstands against the wall (and eventually without the wall). He has a very supportive, encouraging, easy-going personality that really motivates me to do my best. He routinely asks me what moves I want to work on, and we have already covered rope climbs and handstand preps, to name a few. I really enjoy the small group vibe as it gives us a chance to get to know each other better, and we have more time with our coach than we would in a regular CrossFit class. Seth has helped me get to the point where I feel like I can just jump into a regular CrossFit class whenever I want. I'm already almost up to a PR in deadlifts and it has only been a few months (and I took over a year off). It is a bit pricey (I'm paying $240 for 8 classes a month), but I still think it is worth it. You really are getting a lot of time with the coach, even in the small group setting. CrossFit Casco Bay was a host for our seminar and would be my choice of gyms if I lived in the Portland, Maine area. The gym facility is well equipped with just about any type of training aid you could ever hope for.  The gym is clean, organized, and is very spacious for a functional fitness style facility.  There's showers and plenty of parking out front.  The space used to be a garage and so it has these amazing garage doors that let in a ton of natural light and open up to allow fresh air flow. These people just get it!  They're caring and easily connect with their clients.  They also are highly educated in fitness training and continue to pursue more knowledge to enable them to pass that onto their members.  This is the gym I use when traveling to the area and if I lived anywhere near Portland, I would definitely be a member!  Go check them out!

Add to that the fact that I have a genuine spinal condition as well as a need for routine pain medications and you would think something like crossfit is out of my league. However all of the instruction and all of the coaches have been amazingly clear, concise, helpful... and every coach there has been encouraging and friendly! I'm starting out more than 300 pounds. And they are doing everything they can to show me how to make it easier until I'm ready to do it the more challenging way. Many of the members I met were talking about activities they do together outside of the gym! It is LGBTQ IA community friendly and many members, including myself were happily discussing our families and same gendered spouses. I am really looking forward to the changes this exercise and community environment can bring to my every day life.
